I never knew how to make a cutting in a 3D object. Thin cutting at the doors and hood of the car like the ones on kaom's "Cat Roadster". Whenever I tryed to do it with Boolean options it caused great demages on my 3D. Some unwanted holes and stuff like that.Kaom,Did you make a cutting for the doors or you used textures on a roadster?

ivan st, On the roadster model,I used Rhino to model 99% of the car body. The way I did the doors was a bit tricky, I made a block shape of the doors then offset the shape a little to the inside and did what's called a split in Rhino, then deleted the split area that make up the thin line of the doors, hood, trunk etc.... I understand your frustration with trying to do it with a boolean. I had very little success with it myself. I'm cure there is a way to do it with a vertex model though, does Dream have a vertex modeler? Otherwise if you don't want to spend any money on a program like rhino, there are some free ones that might do what you need. Chexk out this link to Open FX and see if it's something you might be interested in, I've heard great things about it. Maybe litst(the carrara forum moderator)has an answer on this subject. I'm sure theres a clean way for you to do it, but I really don't know what it is. You could alway get the rhino demo, it lets you save 25 times before expiring, and it's an incredible modelling program, and I'm getting heavily addicted to it the more I use it. And the Rhino forum in here has great help and support. Good luck in this quest. If I come up with anything I'll let you know. kaom

Thanx a lot for advices. I already downloaded Rhino. It was a long night of downloading with our "Plase use all the 33'6 Kb/s" connections. I hope I'll learn it well someday.

I forgot to mention, theres afree download of Amapi 4. It's the full free version of the program. I'm pretty sure it's still up for download. And if you get, be sure and download the Amapi 4.15 patch to make it more stable. It's a great little program, and very capable of high quality NURBS modeling. And as far as learning Rhino, it's pretty easy, especially with the great tutorials found here at renderosity, there are tutorials for just about everything in it and they are how I learned it, check them out. Go to this link for Amapi 4. Be sure to get the license file to register it and enable it for free! good luck kaom

Ivan, like Kaom, i strongly recommand Amapi for you : it has been thought to model the things you like to model . If you like it, you'll sure make some more amazing stuff with it ! :) And sorry for your doors, but i can't help you . My poor skills are very weak when it comes to "technical" mdelling ... litst

There is an easy way to make a door or hood cut in Carrara and Raydream. All you have to do is 1. Select the polygons that you want to make your cut around, 2. Use the detach polygons command. 3. Resize the detached polygons to around 98%-99%. Keith

Wouldnt the easiest way be to use a bump map and trop it to negative values?

kaom ( ) posted Tue, 07 August 2001 at 3:24 AM

That might work too! But it may not make for convincing door, trunk and hood lines and seams. But it could work, but I know exactly what he's trying to accompolish, and having actual lines cut into the body are going to look the best no matter what. He really needs to do it in a Nurbs application to get the results he needs. Mabye Amapi will do what he needs. kaom

God bless Internet :)Till now I thought If I want to improve in 3D modelling I gotta switch to 3DS MAX or something. Theese programmes you suggested are Great. It's the first impression. I don't know now if I could anything like I could in D3D or RDS but I'm sure I will if I had some tome to dedicate to it.I don't know if I should start with this Rhino. I think I could get addicted to it (first impression)so I don't know if 25 saves could be enough. If someone has few more suggestions for free 3D software I could download, that are fully functionable, please say. Thanx in forth Ivan

Anim8or may not be advanced enough to meet your needs, but it's a nice little freeware package.

Here is a link to OpenFX . It's a freeware 3D prog . I haven't had the time to try it, so maybe it's good, maybe it's bad ;) Some feedback would be great if anyone give it a go . litst

kaom ( ) posted Tue, 07 August 2001 at 12:46 PM

Yeah, I would check out OpenFX, I've heard great things about it, and it appears to be pretty advanced and capable of some really nice stuff. Theres also Blender, I don't know too much about other than it has a fairly steep learning curve, I have it and have played around with it, but I never got the hang of it. But I've seen some great stuff sone with it. kaom

Yes Blender is great if you can handle it . It's a difficult software that was designed to run on Unix at first . There is a Windows version available .

mixepix ( ) posted Fri, 10 August 2001 at 4:57 AM

I think Blender is a great compliment to Carrara when it comes to character animations. Unfortunately Blender doesnt handle other formats very well (except maybe dxf) so if you want to combine the two you have to do it post with layers. The developers have announced that the import/export matter is a priority project though and it will be fixed in a not so distant future. Mikael

Hi, I've tried Open FX (also have Rhino) and for the amount of time I had it up and running it looked really promising. However it crashed a lot. Could have been the vid card - mx2, 32 mg - but I suspect the program has a few bugs too. I really do wish it would operate well as it really is interesting and anytime something good like this comes along for free, the price of others comes down a little. Actually I dont mind paying for really good software like Rhino, but I can't afford the really pricey stuff so I have to wait for the "comsumer" oriented wares to just get better. Hope others are having better luck with Open FX.
