Subject: Macs, Virtual Machines, Windows 7 Questions

melikia ( ) posted Sun, 22 August 2010 at 8:56 AM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 8:28 PM

Argh, curse me pushing buttons I shouldnt.  LOL.  I just lost an hours worth of typing.  BLEH.

OOOOk.... one more time now...  and I vow to not push any strange buttons.  For now.

Lets see...

Last spring, I sold my PC (the monster LOL)... and right now, am borrowing a mini mac from my brother.  He has so kindly made it so I can run Windows 7 using some kind of "virtual" method.

Problem number 1:  Poser doesnt LIKE Windows 7, or vice versa, and it refuses to install.  OOOk... I have the mac version for it as well... (i got the hybrid 7 and bought daughter poser 8 for mac and she's let me uninstall it on her machine so i can play with it on minimac).

Problem number 2:  My Vue 7 inf is windows only, i believe.  I started out with 6esprit (hybrid - win/mac), bought the modules (basically the codes you fill in) to upgrade to pro studio, then did the sidegrade from THAT to Vue 7 inf.  Has anyone ever gotten e-on to allow you to switch over from PC to MAC without costing an arm and a leg for an upgrade/sidegrade/whatever (money is so tight, my pennies are screaming for mercy)?

Problem number 3:  As it seems I have to keep Poser on the MAC side (due to windows 7 - yeesh) until i can upgrade to pro 2010 at least.... is there ANY way possible that I can create a scene in Poser on the Mac side... and import it into Vue on the Windows 7 side and it WORK?  (havent tried it... still fighting installs, etc)  Or, will I be reduced to using Vue 6 esprit/pro studio  (not degrading it - i have used it on occasion even after getting vue 7 inf) on the mac side to import my poser scenes into??

PLEASE dont ask the specs on this thing LOL.  its a mac mini is all I know... and windows 7 is magically playing along.  I feel like a complete NEWBIE.

and yet, strangely.... i can feel the mac side pulling me... saying... "you, too, shall be assimilated"...

and I know, some day, I will wonder how I survived all those years on a pc.  LOL.  Dratted macs.
:P  LOL
still kicking and screaming and protesting the assimilation... (though not as hard)

hi melikia,

not sure if you know this ( i guess you do) but most of the issues with installs are solved in windows 7 by running as administrator so it can change registrys etc etc.

I have poser 7 on win 7 (cant remember if i had issues installing it or not!) but it plays nicely now its installed.

I think you can get the mac version if you just ask e-on, its only fair really that they should give it to you :D

Also, not trying to start a flame war, but i would steer clear of macs/apple, steve jobs has gone a bit insane as of late.... so maybe your comparison to the borg is accurate :D

I have Poser 6, 7 and 8 plus Vue 8 and 8.5 all running on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 without any problems..
As Rich says, it maybe an admin thing, or maybe it's because you're running W7 on a MAC, I don't know enough about MAC's to say, sorry..

I have a 2008 Mac Pro, see specs in my signature below and everything works perfect for me. There is little technical information to go on and it could be a number of things causing your issues. As to steering clear of Apple/Macs that is a complete falsehood and it all comes down to simply computer hardware and software regardless of what you use. You can duel-boot your Mac Pro like I do and use a dedicated hard drive for each OS.

All the programs mentioned work just fine for me both on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and Mac Snow Leopard 10.6.4 64 bit with no problems (except of course the reported bugs in software like Vue, C4D, etc.)

I use: Poser Pro 7, Poser Pro 2010, Vue 8.5 Windows, Vue 8.5 Mac 64 bit (not very stable at this point still beta), C4D and ZBrush 4.0 without trouble.

Hope things work out for you.

Jeff

Development on: Mac Pro 2008, Duel-Boot OS - Snow Leopard 10.6.6 & Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon , 10GB 800 MHz DDR2 RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT.

Problem 1 - right-click on the exe and select Run as Administrator.  Then Poser should install fine on Windows 7.  Anything that uses the Program Files folder needs to be run this way.

Problem 2 - just download again from your account.  You can switch what type download (Mac/PC).

Problem 3 - no idea.  In theory it should work, but you need to configure Vue to see the Poser folder.

Ok... update... even running as admin isnt helping some things... LOL
Not sure yet on poser itself, i was fighting the MAC side yesterday... (today, am eyeball deep in listing things on ebay for mom LOL)... (taking a break LOL)

So, i figure i'm settled into using poser on the mac side, and prepare to get used to using a mac.  Hubby SWORE he had everything installed properly.  bleh.  after most of the day downloading MAC versions of stuff from daz... i end up discovering several things:

  1. this flavor of mac HATES .sit files.  Guess what Daz is loaded with when you download for mac?
1a) workaround.. go to windows side, act like you're installing to a "dummy" runtime, use the PC files....... and it should go... right?  it always has allowed me to install to a temp runtime before... NO MORE.  even running as admin, it wouldnt.. it would start up, get to where it asks daz studio or poser... and THATS when it has a .dll fault.
In the midst of all this... i discover this mini mac is reallllly mini... i.e., little to no hard drive space.  And my experiments of trying to get SOMETHING... ANYTHING to install properly is eatting up more of the precious space.

I havent even TRIED Vue yet... i'm afraid i would cry.  My only saving grace is that photoshop cs4 installed quite happily on the windows side and is cheerfully letting me play.

Oh, and on MAC side... i have NO IDEA where i need to stick those silly legacy content and other content installation files to make everything work... WHY does it have to be so blasted complicated???  Right now, the only thing i can accomplish on mac side is making a huge mess (and surfing the net.  yeesh LOL).  On windows side... im just making one huge old mess.

This is SUPPOSED to be "the best of both OS's" (so sayeth my brother who is now a die-hard mac groupie)... right now, i'm thinking i'm bringing out the WORST in both OS's... im not griping specifically about either of them right now, cus i am not fond of EITHER at this point in time.

I do now know that the VM is Fusion??  LOL.

i have learned to move documents and images from windows to mac & vice versa.

im still TOTALLY clueless.

i'd bang my head on the keyboard, but its on loan!

Hubby is still leaning towards gradually switching me over to a mac... OMG PLEASE NOOOOO.

i want my pc back.

they make break more often than macs, they may be more vulnerable... but dangit... ALL MY PROGRAMS WILL RUN ON ONE!... ok... rant/whine over LOL

oh... and wont try to get vue on mac side until i get the poser stuff figured out LOL.  i wanna be on the windows side of things, as i'm most comfortable with windows... but i also still want to TRY to "like" the mac side...

im still fighting to figure out how to get the content & legacy content into the poser i managed to install on mac side (or rather, hubby did... but im totally lost on where to put these things) to work... i was NOT amused last night when i realized all i had was mannequin guy, simon walk designer, and very VERY little else.  no hair, no clothes, no skin, NOTHING.  only a handfull of lights, basic materials... and UGLY GUY lol.  it was so pathetic, after fighting the hair room for an hour and still ending up with huge bald patches... i just gave up LOL.

I'll get to try again here later to get this figured out... i gotta get back to work...

melika, seems like you dont like computers at all :D, therefore i would reccomend that you stick to what you know, i.e. windows regardless of the benefits of either system (yes i have used macs too, and they are good for some stuff, not for others, just like windows) rather than trying to learn two systems and try and juggle between the two.

I think... that if you have it on a virtual machine, you will also have issues with sharing files, and while this might not seem like a big deal to start with, sharing items between computers etc is REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLy annoying after about a day (although dropbox helps, its still a pain if you forget, put wrong file up etc etc)

no one can really decide for you, it has to be down to you to decide unfortunatly :) but I think you can probably count on us to help you solve your install issues etc :D

 *giggles

I actually love computers... i loved my "monster" in alaska... i do not deal with change very well - either an OS "upgrade" - or in this case, dealing with a whole new way of doing things as well as TWO OS's to learn.  Windows, thankfully - changed some, but not so much I can't blunder my way through.  Its the mac side... and learning how to switch back and forth - that's throwing me for a complete loop.  Add in the fact that this mini mac is on LOAN - and my paranoia/panic kicks in big time - no matter how much my brother tells me - it's a MAC, its virtually UNBREAKABLE - leave it to me to find a way...

and i did LOL.

He worked on mini mac last night for a few hours and got things functioning again.  Fussed at me cus i didnt know that just closing windows on mac side DOESNT shut down their assorted programs.  So, poor mini mac was workin hard - and not complaining LOL.

Success 1) All the folders on the desktop on windows side showed back up.  This was NOT my doing that they vanished - it was my husband's for once LOL.

Success 2) Bro got Poser 7 to finally install on the windows side.  Full thing, too.  =D  AND some of my content!  It was a matter of windows 7 NOT putting things where XP, etc used to - so the install file was directing it to a location that didnt exist, and refused to create a folder there.  Bro just went in, put a folder where it wanted it, named it, and... VOILA!  everything worked.  I now have kids 4 and assorted clothing/skin items, a few lights, and a few scenery pieces set up.  I have to be very careful on what I install, as Windows side only had 11GB free last I looked... and that was before I installed K4 and all their toys.

Success 3)  I DID figure out how to move files from one side to the other - and you're right... what a PAIN.  LOL.  but, I can manage it.  So long as I can keep Vue and poser on the same side - whichever side it ends up being - I have no problem with keeping my adobe products on the windows side.  Images move just as easy as other files do...  not as easily as i'd like, however.  It'd be nice if there was a right-clicky capability to "export to windows partition" or "export to mac partition" and BOOM, there it goes!  My brother explained the setup as two separate houses on the same acre of land, connected via a very narrow underground tunnel in the house's basements - which is how the two houses send "goods" back and forth.  THIS concept, I understand.  Both households have their own way of doing things, their own rules, even their own languages... yet, the things they have in common - they can share.

Lack of Success 1)  I still cant figure out where the legacy content .sit file and the content .sit file for Poser 8 belongs on the MAC side.  Poser over there still only has mannekin dude and ugly nakkie GS Simon (think thats the one) for walk designer.  0.0  I dont even know WHAT to do with said .sit files, as bro says Mac OSX HATES .sit files.  (yep, that's mini-macs "flavor")  Yet, when I double-click them, they bring up a window saying to move some files to some location that i simply cannot find LOL.

Today, I get to attempt to install Vue 7inf... and keep my fingers crossed LOL.  I/m REALLY hoping this goes well, as I bought the toxic trio set over at Daz the other day and have been itching (no pun intended) to use them.

Hubby still intends on pushing me over to using the mac for my main OS.  I know I'll gradually stop fighting it as I become more comfortable with the OS - ok, i HOPE.... and figure out how to get things installed over there LOL.  Put it this way... I was drug... kicking and screaming... from windows 3.x to windows 95.  Again, from 95 to 98... and then AGAIN to XP, and finally XP64 bit (the latter i didnt kick and scream about until I discovered certain truths - very few companies support that platform)... now, i'm being drug to Mac osX and Windows 7.  I know its time to step up to the next OS... resistance IS futile... LOL.

oh yeah...

SUCCESS - I ran poser on windows side last night, everything worked great...
Not-quite a success... well, it kept slowing down until it was creeping along, then i freaked it out by making it delete a hair - and it crashed.

anyways... i think i just had too many programs going - again, im not used to mac side not closing the programs themselves, just the windows associated with them.  bleh.  LOL.

anyways...

thank you everyone for the incredible help you've been so far... and i REALLLLLY hope I can get all this figured out - and maybe, one day... be able to help someone else in the same boat i'm in LOL.

And maybe soon... i'll be posting in the gallery again! =D

I can't help much with the problems you are having getting the Mac versions of things to install.  I have Poser 8 and Vue 8 installed on my Mac and had no problems with the installations, or any problems installing content (other than some of the Daz installers being so old that the code they were written in is no longer supported on the latest Mac OS).

As far as Poser slowing to a crawl on the Windows side, I think that part of your problem is the fact that it is being run in a virtual machine.  VMWare Fusion is good if you are using Windows for simple tasks like word processing, etc.  But if you are going to be doing very resource intensive tasks like 3D work or gaming, it is not so good.  The best option is to use bootcamp to partition the drive and dual boot Windows and OS X.  When using a VM, you are sharing the cpu, RAM, etc. between two OS's and neither is getting the full use of the machine.  If you did a true dual boot, Windows would then have full access to the hardware and your programs would run much better.  In a VM, the OS only has access to a limited amount of virtual resources...not the actual hardware.

melikia ( ) posted Fri, 27 August 2010 at 7:38 AM

Ahhh, thank you!  That cleared up a bit of confusion.  My brother is the one who got all this set up for me - he rattles off terms and information so quickly, I barely catch half of it - let alone understand what I hear LOL.

He did mention another method for having both OS's on the same machine (the one you described), but is reluctant to do so - I have no idea what his reasons are, and he may yet turn around, tell me to prepare for my info vanishing again, and set it up that way LOL.

And yes, the issue with poser & daz content over on the mac side IS the fact that the installers are so old that it cannot read the code.  Mac OSX.  This machine has 8GB memory, and i think 5 are allocated to Mac, and 3 to Windows.  I believe the hard drive is 60GB... 30 to each side, and i have 7GB left on windows side, slightly more on Mac (i havent installed my poser toys, or vue & all its fun toys yet on mac side)

For now, seeings as my family has turned to the Mac Side, and i have to borrow a computer to "play"... i am stuck with the VM thing (unless bro decides a true dual-boot would suit better), and running on both sides of the fence.... I look forward to the challenge of keeping my images fresh with having limited HD space for runtime & extra content folders.  For now, the Kids 4 have taken over Runtime-Land... V4 decided there just wasn't enough closet space for her and fled.  In Vue... I've installed my "absolutely necessary" packs & extras.

Poser has settled down... and yes, after some time, it will slow down to a crawl.  A quick save and reboot of windows seems to help it.  I have discovered that having pretty much anything running on Mac side while I play in windows side with Poser & Vue (photoshop seems immune to this) - it will cause those two programs to crawl and eventually crash.... so, i make sure now I've got nothing going on Mac side.

All told, though - the setup is functioning much better than I could have imagined.... I just need a bigger hard drive in this sucker now...

Thanks again,
~meli
