Subject: Arrgh! Poser folder organization

Zoxesyr ( ) posted Tue, 07 September 2010 at 7:56 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 10:05 PM

O.k. I have let my poser folders get out of hand and I can't find anything anymore.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or links to tutorials, on how to logically organize my poser folders?

BTW -- Has poser ever made an attempt to reduce the need for all the folders and subfolders?  It's nightmarish trying to figure out if I have installed something completely or not.

Ah yes, every Poser user who's been at it for a while knows what you're going through. If you click on the "Search Tutorials" button here on the Rendo website, and type "runtimes organize" you'll get several (so-so) examples of how to tame your runtime.

For me, I created several different folders in a directory I called "My Poser Content", one for Vicky 4, one for Mike 4, one for Vicky 3, Aiko3, etc, then folders for things like Creatures, Props & Items, Sets, Environments... you get the idea.

Then, I found all my original .zip files, and started moving in, one item at a time, being careful to load the items into the correct file folder.

The tutorials you'll find will explain this and give pictures and examples. There's no right or wrong way to do it, just come up with an organizational naming system that's right for you. Oh and remember, in each one of your organizational folders, you need a folder named "runtime" for stuff to install into.

Hope this helps,
Tom

 What's really FUN is when you can picture that outfit in your mind, but you cannot remember if it is for V3 or V4, A3 or A4?  Was it from Rendo or DAZ?  A  freebie or did you buy it ? Ya,  good luck finding that one!  ' . ';

There's been a couple of threads recently about moving Poser files and content.  One thing I might suggest is start a database.  I have one dating back to the old Zygote days ... That way you can track an archive and log where it's saved and IF that package is installed into your Poser Runtime.  I track what character the item is made for, the author of the item, where the Geometry and textures are stored within the Runtime.

It may seem like a lot of work, but once you get the thing going and work to keep it up, it becomes a great resource.  You might also think about making a backup of your entire Runtime.  This can be as simple as copying your Runtime(s) to an external disc -or- copying items according to catagory.

Looks like you have been a member here for ten years?  My first suggestion might be a little late in coming ... On the other hand I have less than 2000 records (1967) in my own database and only 18 CD-ROMs (or DVD volumes) in my storeroom of goodies.

Best Wishes,
Rªnce

PZDB from Rocketship Software is the best solution I've found. Searchable database with all thumbs visable at once. I seem to be its only proponent but it's the best solution I've found for my 110 gig runtimes. The best thing is, you don't have to move or edit anything in your runtime, and the new version uses the same drag, drop and conform interface that the new Poser 8/Pro library uses.

I'm experiencing the same thing right now. Kind of funny, seeing as how my "organizational approach" is along the lines of "remember where you dropped it". Guess that means my runtime is really bad, if even I can't find anything? Here's the thread I posted recently about the same subject: http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2810333

I've been taking it a little at a time, starting with my character (figure) library. So far I've made three folders for human figures (from SM, DAZ, and other places) and one folder for animals. I'm also planning to end up with folders for vehicles and buildings/scenery. When I get to the other libraries, I'm planning to sort by the same six top-level folders, and then sort by the figure/vehicle/scene/theme an item of content goes with. Probably my Pose folder will have subfolders under each figure for MATs, INJs, and positioning poses.

Here is a sample of my runtimes. For the most part I don't have trouble finding things.

In column 2 you see a list of all my external runtimes. In column 1 is a sample of how the runtimes for people are structured. In column 3 shows how I store the matposes. Columns 4 and 5 are examples of 2 non people runtimes.

The unknown runtime is where I unzip things when I forget who they are for. Once I figure it out, it gets moved to the proper runtime.

The temp runtime is where I have the Daz installer put thins so I can sort it the way I want.

In my main runtime I keep the actual people(sorted by creator, male and female), hair (sorted by male and female and short and long. I am also thinking about sorting by transmapped and straned but haven't done so yet), and poses (which are all sorted by character) and things that can be used universally like lights and cameras.

All my geometries and textures go in the main runtime too so Poser can find them easily (in theory)

Now everybody do it my way and stop complaining :m_wink:

But seriously, if you do use a structure like this, back up your runtimes with all the directory structure in tact. You don't want to have to rebuild it.

 hi all,

I have split my runtimes in chunks like Girls, Beings, Scenes and DazPoser, the latter takes the standard runtimes. Each folder contains the Runtime as well as the Daz Studio content, and so on.  I do not use PZDB since it deals with poser only, I use P3dO instead. Next to Poser content it handles Daz content as well (which requires separate lighting sets, camera setups and sometimes materials too), and deals with a secondary structure (and substructures) using favorites (for clothes, hair, etc). This way I have some pack of clothes plus all accompanying textures and props in one place, whatever the source.

As a result, I can doubleclick to launch an object right into Poser, but into Daz Studio, Carrara etc as well, and all from the same library. It fires scripts too, and the creator welcomes suggestions (that's why it works for Daz Studio now, including non-Poser filetypes). My content library contains about 40Gb and it rocks.

It's great, especially if you spend a dime on the Pro version. But do run the free trial first.

Usually I'm wrong. But to be effective and efficient, I don't need to be correct or accurate.
