Would appreciate ideas on how best to articuate my Steamer for animation in Poser.

I know how to articuate the paddle wheels, and the rudder and steering wheel, but what about raising an lowering the sails, and the various block and tackles?  Any and all suggeastions welcome!

She's lovely.

The block & tackle parts can probably be rigged by scaling the length of the ropes, with a few point-ats.  Search the forum and you'll find several good discussions of using point-at for jointed linkages, cables and pistons.  (Best search terms, probably hydraulic and piston.)

For the sails, I'd export the sail as a prop, then use the cloth room to form a draped and folded position, then save an OBJ in that position as a morph target for the original sail.  Also use a magnet or wave to make morphs for wind-filled and billowing sails

nice steamer!

sorry, I am not good at rigging so can't tell you much on that

Again on the sails ...  ISTR you're a P4 type, which rules out the cloth room.  The Wave deformer can give a good ripple or folded morph if you fiddle with it enough.  It would be less trouble than the export/clothroom/re-import technique anyway.

I have Poser Pro 2010 now!  And yes, a lot of work has gone into her, in Max.  Eventually, the porthole covers will open and close, the hatches on the companion ways, the roof of the saloon will open for easy camera access into there, etc.

If I were to put an invisible cylinde between the booms and their respective gaffs, and make a parent chain of boom - cylinder - gaff, could I then use the y axis scale on the cylindrer to hoist the gaff up the mast?

Great looking steamer.  Amazing how much difference the name on the transom makes.  Good job.

Nice work!  Drawing yacht interiors is my profession, and I did quite a few classic ones, so I can appreciate a nice model. You asked for suggestions, so here are some: Perhaps you can make the roof of the deckhouse a little curved, with a slope to the front and some windows on the side of the deckhouse. That will give it a classic look.

Best regards,

Bopper.

Attached Link: The Emberglow Steamer

This is an animation of the Steamer that I've modeled for the Emberglow Graphic Novel project. The paddles turn, the steering wheel also turns, all doors open and close, the portholes open and close, the glass covers on the skylight swing open and shut, and the compass rose in the binnacle also rotates. One day, we'll upload it to our online store here in the MP

DPH models in Max. Unlike bumblers like me, he is a professionally trained modeller, and it shows. His meshes are lean and mean, no superfluous polys.

Acute or obtuse? ...sorry, couldn't resist, David. Just kidding...

Seriously, Nanette is about the most angellic  person I know - and I work with angels (nurses) so I know one when I "see one... 😄 And your dynamics work is superb, Nanette - can't wait to see what you will create in Blender 2.56a!

I cannot help with the rigging.  I just dropped by to say nice work.  I enjoyed the animation of the Emberglow.

Aren't the acute and obtuse ones spelled Angal?  It sounds like they should be!

Ah well, whether it be Angellic or Anglelic, that be my dear friend Nanette Tredoux!
