Subject: Do Not Post about the Messiah 3-D Promotion - it violates TOS!

operaguy ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2011 at 1:07 PM

my prediction is that there eventually might be a request for a Messiah forum on Renderosity.

Messiah has the same feature set as Poser. The pricepoints are nearly the same, 500/300. [assuming pmG resets their street prices back to what they were]

My paradigm is to use Poser to gather resources (short of shaders) and set them up as desired, especially the morphing of human models into characters, then to outload the content in .obj for import into Messiah for rigging, texturing, shaders, animation, dynamics and render.

Quote - > Quote - God, the irony of this thread amazes me.  It started out trying to get people to stop posting about it and ended up being the only thread the mods saw fit to not lock or delete.  Thank goodness we have at least some place to post in.

Well, better one post rather than multiple posts all over the place.

Fully agree that one thread should have been sufficient and, indeed, is, just not THIS thread.  The irony comes in that THIS thread came AFTER my post about the deal.  My post had apparently come after others that had been deleted and thus SEARCH didn't find any other threads (yes, I checked b4 posting).   The mods locked MY thread which discussed the offer directly and left THIS thread for complaining about the other threads.  Which would have served the comminity better, leave a thread about the offer open and able to post in OR remove them all and leave a thread for bitching about the other threads?

Your answer comes in the choices of the mods:

Delete any thread dealing with the Messiah deal (except..)
Leave a thread created AFTER all the other threads for bitching about the Messiah threads (for people to continue to bitch about them).

Priority 1: Stop people from discussing Messiah deal
Priority 2: Enable users to bitch about Messiah threads

Had the mods left ONE thread about the deal, users could have had reasonable conversations about it and a place to do it in.  But NOOOO.  They insisted on removing or locking the threads.  I guess they finally got the message that folks wanted to discuss Messiah and thats why they left this thread alone.  I guess.

And the irony?  Users took over the bitching thread to use for discussing the messiah deal.  Heh, revenge is sweet.

That is the irony of it all that I referred to.

It was good that we had such a notice, even though others don't want it, it would be beneficial to those that want/need it.  So, I say thank you, Wolfie and Opera for such info.

Granted, such offers like this are hard to come by.

Come to think of it, I remember such a deal when Daz was offering Carrara at a rediculous price before they took the reins (with a catch: to join as a PC member).

Bought one today. Kingston 4gb $9.99. I was going to buy another pro copy but decided to spend half of that for the setuptab or whatever it's called. And use the other half to put on purchase of walker plugin.

So I'm ready for my email.

So in the mean time I rigged another figure and imported a quick dress I made in Marvelous Demo. Again someone tells me I can't do that. Messiah does not handle tri's well.

I'm ready to quit telling anyone what I do or have been doing as I am doing everything wrong in Messiah or it is more limited than I had expected.

operaguy ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2011 at 7:24 PM

did the dress function wrong? or the figure?

Tashar59 ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2011 at 8:14 PM

Nope, it works fine.

I see now they have been told different at the Mesiah forums and Messiah does work with Tri's. But has a problem with displacement with tri's.

Yep. I really need to stop offering help or think if it's worth being told I'm wrong all the time..

For windows 7 users, there is an alternative to using a usb flash drive for licensing.

Windows 7 supports the creating and mounting of virtual hard disks(vhd). Create one and use it to generate the license. The vhd is just a file so you can backup and restore it easily.

operaguy ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2011 at 8:27 PM

i hear you tashar. been there.

sometimes people's answer is a constant "no" until you just bust through and do "yes."

My company is having that issue with InfusionSoft. We keep finding ways to do things they say you can't do. After each adventure like that one of my team always says "where do we send our invoice for showing them how to use their product?"

Of course, the opposite is true too: attempting to do things the system is supposedly able to do, but you can't get it to work, then the "helpers" tell you "you CAN do that" until after another adventure they say, "O gee, guess we'd better send a trouble ticket to the programmers."  We'd love to get paid for finding those things too.

I hear you on that one too.

I read on thier forums about a crash with XP and the gtx 460 if you do a certain thing. They are trying to tell the people that they have bad ram. Not true. Because it does the exact thing to me with the same system as the ones posting the bug. I know I don't have any bad ram.

When I get to signing up I will jump into that thread and see if we can get it fixed. The more that post to that problem the sooner they will admit it's a bug.

So now I guess my next question is how large a partition is needed for this "KeyFile"?

wolfie ( ) posted Wed, 16 February 2011 at 9:19 AM

From what I was told the key file is less than 1k so the smallest USB you can get would work.

In addition to the Windows7 vhd,  I should think RamDisks would work too.

Also BestCrypt and other utilites can mout virtual drives on non-Win7 systems.

I wonder how it would respond to a virtual driver like Daemon Tools that can mount ISO images.  I am wondering if you could make a small ISO, key it, and then put the key file in it.  Throw that and daemon tools (freeware) on a thumb and you can mount and use it anywhere.

shedofjoy ( ) posted Wed, 16 February 2011 at 9:20 AM

why cant you backup the keyfile from the usb stick?

wolfie ( ) posted Wed, 16 February 2011 at 9:25 AM

Quote - why cant you backup the keyfile from the usb stick?

You can.  Its not the key file that is important.  Its the USB stick its on, it acts like a hardware key.  If the hardware is not presnet in the system, the program won't run.  Copying the file doesn't help without the hardware that it is keyed to.

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Wed, 16 February 2011 at 3:49 PM

I didn't know about the hardware dongle.  that's often a deal-killer for mac apps.  keep us posted on whether messiah can render a nice animation quickly in win7, using its own rigging on some obj file.

nightfall ( ) posted Wed, 16 February 2011 at 5:39 PM

The keyfile is very small, so the smallest disk size should work(16mb for vhd).

Quote - I wonder how it would respond to a virtual driver like Daemon Tools that can mount ISO images

CD-Rom/DVD-Rom and thus ISO etc won't work afaik, the hardware needs to appear as a harddisk.

Miss Nancy:  You can key the license to your computer (as most programs do).  If you have other computers and want the license to work on any of them, then key the license to a flash drive instead.

In any direct manner, no.  Sometimes, you're just not going to have a USB stick available to you, or all of your ports are full with things you need (keyboard, mouse, etc.).  Using a VHD with Windows 7 is no different than using a USB stick...for all intents and purposes, that's what a USB stick is; a small hard drive.

HOWEVER, this is not to say that it does not violate their license.  I haven't read their license and whether or not it requires that the key be put on a USB stick/dongle or not, so you'll want to contact someone at Messiah to clarify for you, or thoroughly read your license when you receive it.

Tigher Direct

For example:

Kingston DTIG3/2GBZ DataTraveler G3 USB Flash Drive - 2GB - $5.99

Also for those who bought multiple keys this product would be cool.  When I first saw this product a year or so ago, I thought it was the dumbest thing I had seen.  Apparently so did others because I can't find it to purchase now at my regular sites.  Still, it would have been perfect for multiple licenses.  6 small 1gb drives detachable from a credit card sized holder.  In general I would shy away from anything "mini" as it usually ends up lost but this one intrigued me.**

Tashar59 ( ) posted Thu, 17 February 2011 at 11:58 AM

The thing about ordering from those places are 1. They are American stores. Not everyone is American. 2. Shipping. That completely defeats any use of those prices. Specially if your not American. Just think what that cost would really be. I would not bother with the Canadian stores because it would cost me more in shipping than it would in gas and the couple of extra bucks to just go to your local shop and get one. And, I would do that when I go to town to buy groceries so there is no extra gas price.

I got that same Kingston but a 4 gig for $4 more with no waiting and no shipping/duty charge. They only had a couple of 1 and 2gb sticks and they were brands that died on me in just a few months.

wolfie ( ) posted Thu, 17 February 2011 at 12:33 PM

@Tashar59,

Please don't turn this into an anti-american flame war.  We all know that there are people here from all over the planet.

If you are not in the US, don't shop here if you don't want to.  Simple as that.  Instead of griping about US stores and shipping, how about you post some good prices from WHERE YOU ARE instead.  That would be good for users from your own country.

We have been given reasonable permission to post good links.  Lets keep it civil and limited to the subject at hand, cheap USB drives that would be ok for Messiah.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Thu, 17 February 2011 at 12:35 PM · edited Thu, 17 February 2011 at 12:40 PM

I was not gripping. I'm not anti American what so ever. The prices are not as good as you make them even for you. Unless you get them for no shipping cost for such a small purchase.

I don't get it there is nothing to be shipped! USB Flash Drives can be bought all over the planet a dime a dozen even in the Borneo jungle. The software is to be downloaded as usual. So what is the problem?

?

Tashar59 ( ) posted Thu, 17 February 2011 at 1:01 PM

You don't need to. I found that I was clicking on the wrong level when I was scaling the skeleton and that's why it was blowing V4 to pieces. Cl8ick the "Effects" tab Select the "Character_Master" You will be able to scale the rig down to V4 without any later issues.

If you buy from amazon or tigerdirect or newegg or any of those other places You usually have to pay for shipping unless you buy a big enough order from them, sometimes.

All I was saying is that it is usually cheeper to just go to the closest store near you that sells them. That's what I said and did. I don't know how I got to be anti-American for that.

wolfie ( ) posted Thu, 17 February 2011 at 1:16 PM

The point is to purchase a quality stick.  The software will be keyed to the hardware.  If you buy a cheep dollar store stick and it fails, now you have a headache getting the software re-keyed to a new stick.  Sure, every stick will fail eventually but the odds are less if its from a quality manufacturer.

For the sake of less hastle chance I am willing to pay $10-$20 for a good quality stick rather than going to the dollar store and getting a Hello Kitty stick for $1 and risking $1200 software on it.

To get Geep's "Six foot stick" prop from Poser size up to life-size you need to scale it x2.439 using something like objaction scaler or your modeling app. If you scale V4 by the same amount she almost fits the autorig, just minor tweaks needed.

I have another hypothosis: they can't find a reason to shut down the promotion. they are running the numbers and seeing that the revenue flow at $40.00 has every sign of being greater than at $600, perhaps for a long time to come.

"COGS" for mature software is near zero, resulting in spectacular opportunities for creative pricing structure for smart companies.

As long as they an cope with any/all customer support issues with licensing in volume as opposed to "occasional" sales, what would be the reason to shut it down?
