Subject: Need a good UV program

Ok, first I have UVMapper Pro (can't find my backup), Hexagon 2.5, SILO 2.2, MODO 2, Blacksmith3D V4, and for the life of me, I cannot seem to UV map a damn simple halter dress.  Is there a simple to use UV Program that a dumbass like me can actually map a dress, rather than make a weird looking fractal-like DNA helix?

Thanks, -Starkdog

UVlayout.

the most basic version is free and easy to learn. It'll let you "unwrap" the dress and save the OBJ, letting you lay it out better in UVMP or similar. I use it like that to do the "grunt" work.

Roadkill

Use the Maya 1.1 release candidate 3. It's really a standalone ;)

I've been modeling for years and I think one of the most difficult things to do is UV map from scratch. I think there is even one UV app that comes with a straight-jacket.  X.X

I normally need a straight jacket when I'm doing uvs...lol

In chat, someone mentioned 3D coat, dunno if it's any good.  I think all UVmapping is doomed to being awful.

Thanks for the advice.  I found out that I bought Ultimate Unwrap 3D like 4 years ago, and just re-downloaded it and it worked nicely.  I'll post a pic of Miki 3's new beach/cover dress in a bit.

Thanks again- Starkdog.

it ain't been updated recently, but it's free.  was surprised to see that steve martin had added intel coding to his lengthy resumay, which includes banjo-playing and appearing on the telly and at the oscars several yrs ago.

why? -select seams

-unwrap

-position,rotate,scale uvs

3d Coat has an excellent UVMapping tool set.  it's really simple and has lots of great options.

Another vote for UVLayout.

I'm trying to work with an object in hex, despite seams down the middle and what I've heard is the proper placement of pins, the stupid thing is adding some twists in the side of the object on the UV... meaning I'd have to manually redo every stinking coord.  Hense I'm trying another program as I don't want to rely only on mat shaders for this object.

Winterclaw, that's my point!  Hexagon should be renamed Helixagon, as it makes a nice DNA-like strand for a UV map.- Starkdog
