Subject: Poser figure made of wood as digital model?

madno2 ( ) posted Wed, 02 March 2011 at 11:30 AM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 11:20 PM

Once upon a time I saw a poser figure (a 3D one) to be used inside Poser (the 3D software), that was a simulation of a poser figure (made of wood) to be used in the real world (e.g. on a table without a 3D software).

I think it was included in the content of a Poser installation. But I can't find it my runtimes. Am I right that it came with some version of Poser?

If yes, does anybody know which version it was?

If no, does anybody know where I can buy such a figure (the digital one ;-)

If you have Poser, do a search in the Figures Library for "Mannequin" 😄

In P7, look in the "Additional Figures" Library.

The posing dummy was in Poser content and is in  the figures library  'additional figures'

as mannequin.cr2.

just thought.

a "Woody" rigged with potentiometers (?) to measure joint movement, rigged to a USB interface then into poser...

where's me soldering iron... and a clue of how do it anyway...

Dr. Geep,

thanks for the reply.

I found a:

mannequin.obz
and
mannequin.crz

in:
...Poser Pro 2010 ContentRuntimeLibrariesCharacterPoser 1-5Additional Figures  library

but Poser 2010 does not like the compressed format. It says mannequin.obj is missing. I don't know how to uncompress the files by hand (maybe it's a path issue but because of the compression I can't edit the files in a text editor). If I can't solve this, do you know if a "Mannequin" product can be bought somewhere?

To Kaibach,

:-))))

I find the .obz in same folder as .crz, and it loads fine for me in PP2010

You can uncompress files with Scripts-->Utilities-->uncompressPoserFiles

they are compressed with Gzip, so it easier for me to use Winrar and extract file then give proper extension if needed.

Check the "Uncompress geometry files (.obj)" box

and ...

Walla !  😄 ... Read the desired file in a text editor.

Hey fellows,

sorry for the late reply (I nearly burned my dinner because of sitting in front of the PD, so had to take care of that first).

It worked. Uncompressed the files according to your advice and found out that the path to the obj was wrong in the cr2. Fixed it and now the mannequin loads fine.

Well still can't get the idea of Kaibach out of my head. Think about a wooden poser figure with some "potentiometers" (is that the right english expression?) that transfers it's settings via USB or whatever to 3D software. I would buy such a "prop" if not too expensive. Posing would be so much easier with it. Oh dear what an idea. Unfortunately it will not come true. Not enough users to buy such a gadget. No manager will ever take the risk to invest in such a hardware project.

Anyway thanks for your help.

The posing mannequin idea surfaced years ago. I'm not even sure this 2001 thread was even the first mention of such a device. You might even be able to cobble something together using one of the hobby robotics kits and I think Microsoft may even have a free robotics development environment. Years ago, you could find all sorts of projects detailed in electronics magazines and Radio Shack made a lot of money selling components. These days, most would probably not go for it unless it came pre-built and packaged as an IPhone app :-)

I'm actually looking into it. not promising anything tho.. I can just about hold a soldering iron ;)

we'll see tho...

I bought one of 'em from Ikea for about a quid.  A mannequin, that is, not a soldering iron.  :)

Back to the OP's original question. When Poser 8 asked you to locate the OBJ and all you have are OBZ's, you really only need to locate that OBZ in the open dialgue box and Poser 8 will accept the OBZ file. The problem really wasn't so much the file extension of the geometry file, the problem was the CR2 pointing to the wrong location.

In Poser 8, Woody was replaced with Andy.  If you reset your prefs to factory defaults, close P8 and then relaunch, the scene with Andy loads by default.

Andy and his female counterpart are in the figures library under Poser8>Additional Figures>Mannequins.  You have Andrea and Andy.

Andy's obj or obz is in the same folder as the cr2.  Both are located in Runtime>libraries>character>Poser 8>Additonal Figures>Mannequins>Andy.

Kaibach

While you build the potentiometers in - couldn't you put e-motors in, as well? So we could let the thing get controlled by poser and let it do everything and the dishes? ;-}

(So whooo needs a vacuum cleaner than - I've got POSER.)

(My windows have spots and stripes! Don't worry, Poser 12.5 SR1 and BagginsBills WinClean AddOn will fix this!)

And than, imagine:

(Hello Forum! I want my PoserWoodPal to sit down and do the Poser work for me. Has somebody got a script for this?)

LOL

no. lets keep it simple ;) and far as I can tell, this won't fit into a Woody... it'll be larger, but thems the breaks...

now I'll remind you all again.. this is not going to happen for a while.. there's some life things I need to sort out before I do any actual solder work. right now it's more the research phase.

Dave-So ( ) posted Thu, 03 March 2011 at 8:49 AM · edited Thu, 03 March 2011 at 8:49 AM

if you can figure out how to conduct soldering via remote control/robotics, I can solder for you. I'm actually pretty good :) . Did a 3 week, 8 hour a day, micro-soldering training course while in the Navy.
