It's hard to judge unless we can see some of your work.  I only saw piece in your gallery, but your nude and it looked fine to me; I might of used more contrast, unless that is the look you wanted.  It's like anything else, it takes practice - my first 8 months was so uninterestng. I tried to study artist work that I liked, and also to develop my own style.  Wrong lighting, or no shadows makes 3D looks flat. I purchased the book Digital Lighting & Rendering by Jeremy Birn and it helped my work a lot.  I'm sure others will have different suggestion.

Images that run around in my head eventually end up in my gallery.

Attached Link: THE GIMP

I notice you only have one image in your gallery . But it looks fine to me.

I understand your frustration. Lighting is tricky and it takes practice (and patience). None of the lighting addons I bought work right for me without some level of adjustment.

Most of my work comes out bland too. So I throw it into Photoshop CS1 and play with layers, filters, etc. But I'm a noob at Photoshop also.

Anyhoot if your not happy with Paint Shop Pro then try The GIMP. It's equivalent to Photoshop. And best of all The Gimp is FREE. Many hobbyist use it.

That image looks fine to me. Perhaps a slight contrast boost to intensify the high-key look would improve on it, or moving the black and white points. PSP7 is more than enough for that sort of thing, I don't think you need to spend money on Photoshop just yet.

Thank you for all the tips and suggestions.I will use gimp and paint shop pro 7.That black and white pic of mine is the best of what i have done thus far.I will practice some more with contrast and lighting.

Don't be afraid to share your art, and you can ask for critiques when you post your work.  People are willing to help if you ask.  We all had to start from where you are.   :)

As Mischief said earlier, if you put up some of your images that you are having problems with, we can then better gauge where you need to direct your efforts.

Nude - contrast is kind of odd, good lighting on the torso

Tai chi - shiny tiled floor with no displacement clashes with the grungy look of the rest of the scene

Lab experiment - figure and pool don't really match up with the background theme

Definitely second the recommendation of the Jeremy Brynes book it's very useful.

Delve into color theory a bit too, enough to figure out which colors work together to make it easier to decide when to break "the rules" for emphasis.

I'm terrible in Studio myself, but 2 things help me immensely...

Lantios DayLights and Dimension Theorys Light sets/props...

Between those 2, you'd be set w/ regards to lighting... I don't find that lighting methods, techniques or practices are transferable between programs, so what I do in C8Pro or Bryce doesn't even apply in Studio, so I am "rather obligated" to use presets for lights... If Studio were my main app, I'd invest more time to learning how to do it myself, but for that I have no qualms against the "one click" solution.

There are 3 kinds of people in the world. Those that can count, and those that can't..
