A victim of Steve's advertising.. I tell you, that Steve is a bad influence... :) He comes around here, showing you all kinds of pictures, and before you know it, you're spending money you wanted to use for something else for flowers... :) anyway, this is a just a quickie, a random multiple duplication, but still very realistic looking...

smallspace ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 2:19 AM

HAH! Now, you too are an advertiser... ;) Neat job, BTW!

I'd rather stay in my lane than lay in my stain!

Send the picture to Cindy at Trillium. She love's putting people's pictures in her gallery.

I'd rather stay in my lane than lay in my stain!

Oh wow, those are great....aren't they the best to work with, I love them. Sharen

martial ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 4:04 AM

I have bought the cd and also like it(smallspace victim too) :the VUE conversion is very nice and the mapping is excellent.Try loading obj format and compare the mesh with the one in vue format!

tradivoro ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 9:29 AM

Well, I'll send it off to Cindy, Steve, even though this is really simplistic... Anyway, yes Sharen, they're definitely great flowers and already I'm thinking of a couple of serious projects to do with them.... Martial, I've loaded the obj and the 3ds, and honestly, I gotta talk to Cindy cause they ain't happening, and I want to know how to get it to happen for Bryce, which I still use...

tradivoro ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 9:31 AM

P.S. Thanks for the kind words about the picture... :)

martial ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 7:06 PM

For Tradivoro:would you mean obj and 3ds not load in Vue?(sorry,i am not an english speaking person)Because i use VUe 4.1 and all the formats are loading for me.The mesh in obj is very detailled ,more than the vob one but the texture is better displayed in vob format.I also try it in Truespace5 and in Carrara. In Bryce 4 ,i have loaded obj format but the rendering is very dark.I prefer the rendering in Vue:nice colors, more natural ones

smallspace ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 7:18 PM

...and THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is exactly why it took me sooo long to do the conversion! Every single material on the Vue plants was optimized for Vue4, taking into account the semi-translucent nature of nature! -SMT

Great pic, Paul! Shows off those flowers quite beautifully! I, too, am a victim even though I haven't placed my order yet. But it's a definite am-going-to. :)

tradivoro ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 11:22 PM

No, it's in Bryce that the uploads are a problem, both in 3ds and obj.... I didn't bother uploading the 3ds or obj versions in Vue since they had the vob version which looks great for all the flowers I've checked thus far... But in Bryce it's a problem... I've been sending Cindy a couple of pictures done in bryce, as a matter of helping out, and she sent me one back of the obj format which was much better than the original... So, I'm not complaining, I'm just acting as sort of beta tester and maybe help to make the 3ds and obj in bryce better... I'll tell you one thing, I rendered the 3ds in 3D studio max and it looked great... So, I don't know what's going on in Bryce...

tradivoro ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 11:24 PM

Steve I love the "semi translucent nature of nature" line... but yeah, the vob flowers look great, thanks for working on them so hard...

tradivoro ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 11:25 PM

And Martial, I'm going to try the obj's in vue and see what that looks like...

tradivoro ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 11:25 PM

I will be looking forward to your pictures Varian... :)

You are right Martial, there is definitely a very nice quality to the obj files in Vue... On the left is the vob file and onthe right is the obj... although the vob file looks very nice, there is a certain richness to the obj, and I would probably go with the obj file if doing a picture... Look at the back of the petals on the obj, also looks very nice...

Varian ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 11:56 PM

If I'm not mistaken, you can simply adjust the transparency level (and perhaps luminosity) on the VOB materials. AFAIK, Steve used the same materials on the VOB conversions that the OBJ and 3DS use, but he set them up specifically for Vue's various settings. So hey, don't be afraid to tweak the settings to your taste. :) And Steve, I'm waiting for that Food collection, too. Wouldn't want you to forget about that. Would be perfect for this month's Theme. grin

smallspace ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2001 at 4:58 AM

Hey, Cindy has Vue4 now...and she loves it! So she will be doing the food CD... As for the Vue Flowers, there are a couple here and there where the uv mapping came out a little differently after being converted from the original Lightwave, and I just couldn't couldn't get around it with either Polytrans or 3D Exploration. I Don't actually have Lightwave, but I know that the trouble is in how Cindy set up some of the surfaces. She's working on correcting that, and there may be an update at some point. None of the Vue4 flowers actually use transparency. That would increase their render time too much. Instead, I simulated their translucent nature by setting them as "single sided", turning on the "Backlight" function, and increasing the "luminescence" setting. -SMT

Varian ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2001 at 9:24 AM

So, Cindy does all these nice flowers, and she's got that food collection going, and now she even has Vue 4? Man, the lady has good taste! :D

tradivoro ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2001 at 2:39 PM

well, I'm glad that I have the obj to give me a little variety here...

smallspace ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2001 at 3:40 PM

You should try the COB import into Vue (for a laugh) The Vue importer misreads the "Caligri Phong" shading and thinks the plant is a metalic object (color reflected light) with absolutely NO response to ambient light. -SMT

tradivoro ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2001 at 3:58 PM

I'll try it... Should be fun.. .I wonder what the 3ds looks like in Vue... Some it looks decent in Bryce...

JoeBlack ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2001 at 4:38 PM

whats' the difference between an *.obj file and a *.vob file, when a vob is just a "Vue Object File"? JoeBlack

Varian ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2001 at 8:26 PM

Well, a VOB is a Vue OBject, and an OBJ can be an Imagine OBJect or (more familiarly) a Wavefront OBJect, and a 3DS is a 3D Studio object. They are all 3D model object formats, but each format is different. VOB can only be opened by Vue. Wavefront OBJ and 3DS can be opened by a variety of programs. :)
