THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: OUT OF MEMORY Bryce7pro

I have been trying to put together a scene that includes TheFreak4 with all the morph potentials in Daz and M4 with the same... Also in the scene is UD Fantasy Hydra with a few extra heads.... They all import into Bryce from Daz but then when I try to save the
Bryce scene I get "OUT OF MEMORY"..  I know there are a lot of polygons in the group, but Please...Really?  I have tried reducing the aspect ratio and that doesn't allow a save either...  Is there something I can do to remedy this?   There's a lot more I wanted to add to the scene...lights... maybe some landscape of some sort...

i suspect it may be too much for your computer? what's your computer specs? video card as well as the amt of RAM on it? how heavy are the polygons? how big is your file?

whilst you waiting for answers fromt he rest of us.... do a search on rendo using out of memory.. bryce.. more than 5 days, less than 200 days.. you might find there are posts that may help you..

You are using DAZ Studio I guess. There´s a new update for Bryce 7 wich should solve this problem. I havn´t been able to install it. :-( Others have the same problem as well, but you might give it a try.

Sorry for double post!!!

Hi,

besides of using possibly too many poly-heavy objects: Imported models/objects esp Poser/DAZ characters might use very large BITMAP TEXTURES. (I have seen 4k x 4k pixel textures, which would be useful and necessary only for a very near close-up or to consider very fine details).

Using many and also large sized image textures has quite an impact on Bryce and its memory usage!

So I´d suggest to check all contained bitmap textures in your scene and to reduce their size where suitable for the intended result.

thank you all

I'll try to reduce the bitmap texture image... and see what that does..

Hubert is right. Large textures are a killer for B7.

Its an unresolved bug in Bryce, basically its a memory leak, if they ever get back to development it should be fixed, it is a known issue though.

Do atleast one thing a day that scares the hell outta ya!!

I had a lot more luck using b6.1 and DAZ Studio 2 and then bring the scene into B7 wiht the merge function. Seems the memory problem wasnt as acute in B6.1 as in later versions. But now I have had my PC reinstalled with Windows 7 and I´m not able to find the B6.1 installers.

In checking out the texture images for just one of my characters (M4)... I was ASTOUNDED byt the number of texture images and bump images associated with him....  I am in the process of reducing the images.... and as a test I am also converting them to JPEGs to see if that helps.... and will see how  the finished texture appears..

As it has always been... in the past, as it is today....  This problem I had now with the good info from all you folks, I have serendipitously learned other things about textures that I have needed and wanted to know....

Thank you all

Steve

Hi Steve,

do not waste any efforts converting bitmap textures to JPG, to solve this internal memory issue. These files would immediately get uncompressed again by Bryce, when loaded/used in your scene, which is logical.

JPG files will only save diskspace, as external files. Besides, consider, that a JPG compression will always reduce the image quality and might cause noticeable image/detail artefacts. If you intend postwork, always use a lossless image format (e.g. TIF, BMP,...).

try to remove all textures in studio and put the textures back on in bryce. studio textures need work in bryce anyway

thanks for the additional info... Interesting about the Jpg uncompression in Bryce...

I have reduced my texture images in PhotoShop and saved them for the web (Gif.) anD have reduced the size of my one M4 model from 89+Mb down to 17Mb.... I'm sure that I will have no difficulty finishing my image with this knowledge and ... means of reducing the textures...

thank you all

Hi Steve,

GIF is no solution either. ;)

This format too will only save you harddisk space, but not affect the high memory usage inside Bryce (or Photoshop)! Applications will always use uncompressed bitmaps, to display and render the affected object.

There can be quite a huge difference between FILE-size of a compressed bitmap/object/workfile and its actual physical size, if working with it inside an application.

The only solutions would be:

  • To reduce e.g. 2048x2048 pixel sized highres bitmap-textures to 1024x1024 or lower (requiring only a quarter of their original area/size then).
  • Or to remove bitmaps totally where suitable (e.g. for not used bumpmap or transparencies).
  • Or to replace bitmaps with procedural textures (calculated with algorithms) in Bryce, where feasible.

What to do, always depends much on how many details you want to show and/or how distant your obects are placed in the scene. Esp if you will use witjh multiple objects and highres textures.

Hi Steve,

just a hint about GIF, in case you didn´t already know:
The GIF-format is a wonderful compact and lossless compression format, but limited to only 256 colors!! This small color palette is good enough for many Web purposes, but hardly suitable for photo-realistic content or according textures.

Better use JPG format, though always with high quality options, trying to avoid noticeable detail losses and visible compression artefacts, esp at fine details or along smooth color-gradients.

Or use BMP, TIF or PNG format, if you want to avoid quality losses in your pictures.

Steve a suggestion i have that may help with this issue which i used and helped me when using bryce 5.5 and 6 with "Out of memory".

Before you inport the freak4 or Michael from daz to bryce hide/remove all body parts which will not be viewed in the image. EG: anything hidden by clothing. This will lower the file size down as well as the Bitmap Textures used by them..

I haven't used bryce in such a long time so i'm going on my memory here..hope it helps.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

I also have had the out of memory issue more than a few times, I searched and found a post in on of the Daz forums, I can not find the actual aricale that I  read but here is the link to download a .exe that will allow Bryce to use up to 3GB of ram as apposed to only 2 GB without using "Large Adress Aware .exe".                                                  I was only able to save BR7 files if they were less than 200MB, any thing above that surely ment I would see the dreaded out of memory window, now after usine LAA I can now save BR7 files up to 350 MB's not tried any thing bigger than that so far. and I have not seen the out of memory window either!
