Subject: VSS Skin Test - Opinions

Bagginsbill love the free SSS...would love to see what a PRO version would do....

Hey bill,

I just upraded from P8 and am very impressed with the new Subsurface Skin node.  With a simple texture and this node, I can get way better results than I ever did with P8.

However, the skin shader you provide in your VSS prop is still better than the new Subsurface Skin node.

Would you please show we PP2012 users how to add this new node to your VSS prop to create an even more fantastic skin shader?

bagginsbill ( ) posted Fri, 28 October 2011 at 10:45 AM

Well I posted a couple VSS compatible skin shaders that use Scatter over at RDNA. People talk about "BB's Post #240" shader all the time. Did you see any of that or no?

Find every thread started by me and read every page - you will learn more about scatter than you ever dreamed.

Read also threads started by carodan, nightsong, paulfrancis, caisson, vincebagna, to name a few.

This is carodan's image, starting with one of the shaders I posted, and then he tweaked as he usually does, finishing what I start but have no patience nor artistic skill to finish.

Dan is a master. He posted his shader.

You should click this for full size. (You may have to click again in your browser to let it go past your screen size. It's big.)

Hi bagginsbill

Please, explain that for a beginner - how to make simple freckles and/or spots with VSS (In Poser Pro 2012)?

I used the manual as far as my understanding) Unfortunately I do not know very well English.

What I did: Load v4, load texture map on v4, load VSS_PR3_AO, load vssMainButtons.py and make synchronize. Now open material editor (with selected "VSS_Skin_Shader_PR3_1" in scene)

What should I do next? (If you can explain on the points)

looks great from here...i use a 46" LCD HDTV on HDMI  for a primary monitor 21" viewsonic for secondary on VGA , i cant tell much dif in the two, i think the HDTV out performs the standard monitor in most instances tho,SONY contrast ratio 1,000,000/1...but my eyes are rapidly aproaching 60yo... I would love to help out but I'm overwhelmed with work that must be done immediately.

First thing is I would not use the PR3 skin shader with PP2012. I'd use one of the new ones I posted at RDNA.

I posted a thread about elderly skin, which creates age spots. With appropriate changes in color and size, you'd get freckles instead.

That thread is here:

http://www.runtimedna.com/forum/showthread.php?64446-Elderly-Skin&highlight=elderly

You want to create that kind shader in Template Skin.

But not literally that shader. I'm just saying that it demonstrates how to use spots nodes to make spots in skin. You'd actually want the S+B shader that is already set up as a template shader for VSS.

If you want to make your own template shader, it is basically the same as creating any shader, but you leave the images blank, and you must get the nodes named correctly. This can be done pretty easily. You attach images to the poser surface color, bump, etc - for the places you will need image. You then go into the VSS Designer and press Auto Rename Images. Then you build your shader with those named components.

bagginsbill  ok, thanks, I`ll try it. The fact that I am looking for a complete replacement of the plug "Skin Realism Kit for V4" from daz, unfortunately it cannot work in PP2012.

That's pretty old technology designed for much older versions of Poser. Poser Pro 2012 takes advantage of a much more sophisticated set of material room nodes. There are several threads, mostly featuring Bagginsbill and SnarlyGribbly that discuss the various methods of applying skin shaders.

I have my own solution (also thanks to Bagginsbill and his matmatic) but unless you like coding in Python, it's not the easiest way to get a new shader up and flying. VSS and EZSkin definitely are.

Hm ok, I will take note.

It would be interesting to learn more about your method (which is to create freckles)
And actually, I would not want to go into programming scripts (I just want to freckles )).

I will be glad of any help.

RobynsVeil ( ) posted Fri, 10 February 2012 at 5:11 PM

@ zxstuff: Unfortunately, "my" method (matmatic) does involve a "wee bit" of programming. Python is a very easy language to learn, and matmatic makes it even easier, but if you go that route, you still won't get freckles overnight.

I'd be looking at other solutions if you want quick and easy.

"freckles overnight" :-)))))
No no, of course not, I do not hurry. The main thing - clarity of presentation.
I also admit, I have decided to little learn a Python, if saw a beautiful picture with freckles (and if it could not be obtained except through programming in Python), but not sure that you have so much patience. Therefore, I will be glad and simple solutions.

How do you keep vss from changing nodes on clothing that has parts named similar to human characters? It won't let me re-load the materials from the materials tab...

You need to address it in the *Apply Rules* window.  See image.

Here are the steps:

1 . In the material room: look at Apply Rules section of the VSS prop

2.  In the python script menu (if you're running the VSS script) click on the Designer button and then on the Add Rule Node button.

  1. When a small box/window pop up (it will say: Add Rule (in the title bar) and  Choose in the main box) select  "Select other - type in". Click  OK button.

  2. Input the name of the  figure that you want to change from generic to whatever character actor name you want in the "Enter Sync Zone Name " input box e.g. if it's Michael or Victoria or the name of the specific actor you're using, then type it in. (I usually put Michael* so I'm covered regardless of the version). Click OK

  3. You're almost done! Now delete the Rule node.  And you're done! You'll not be having that minor annoyance of the clothing getting SS on them.

Hope this helps!

Hmmn so here's a random thing I rendered, just playing with vss. Can't remember which light I used but I'm pretty sure it was one of the vss outdoor ones. Wish I could just switch to pp2012 instead of being stuck back here with poser 7....

Still, for Poser 7, that's a very nice render! I see you turned down the bump and the overall color is very good. I like this render! He still needs hair! :)

Ok I am lost here... I have installed everything where it should go. I inserted the prop, went to file run python script, chosen vssMainButtons.py to load up your python buttons and I am not getting any buttons???  I am in Poser 9, wanting to use this as a skin option for a character I am working on for people who have older versions of poser.

Please help :(

This is the panel you should see when you open the Python Script after clicking on VSSMainbuttons.py.  Verify if this is the case.

Try this, close Poser and reopen, open the Python Script panel, load the VSSPR3 prop, run the VSSmainbutton.py script through File>run Python Script then look at the panel to see if it changed.

A lot of times when I use vss the eyes on a character go black. Why is this? Is there a quick way to fix it that I'm too dense to figure out on my own, or is it better just to not include it in the vss altogether?
