Hi all, firstly this is not going to be one of those ...so whats the best software programs threads ...so chill!

I used to be a fair modeler, havent done any for 5-6 years!

I used to use Truespace ...

I recently have decided to give it a go as a hobby, and so tried the latest version of TS... It's not what it used to be and crashes my system alot!

I have tried Blender .... yuck!

Is there a simple Ts like modeler out there that supports sub d and is easy to render out from?

Oh yer and on the inexpensive side ...  I now have 2 kids and not a lot of cash to spare!

Many thanx ... oh and it did turn out to be one of those "which software threads" sorry!

You ask what's a simple modeller to support subD.

SubD for what? SubD in the target app or subD in the modelling app? Poser does smoothing via an algorythm, DS does subD.

Blender is excellent modelling software that uses Catmull-Clark subD. Steep learning curve but heaps of help out there. I use it and I use Silo. It also supports subD. Reasonably inexpensive and there are some excellent tutorials for it by John Fugazi in the marketplace. Wings3D is amazingly powerful. Antonia by ODF was made in Wings3D. We are going to be re-releasing her in a very short time: an exciting figure with incredible possibilities.

If you're on a tight budget and don't need an industrial strength modeller like Blender, go with Wings3D. You won't hit a wall for ages with that one!

I have to agree with RobynsVeil Wings would be a great place to start. It's just a modeller. Wich is one of the reason it is easier to learn. Also the comand menu is always rellavent to your selction. For instance if you have vertices selected, when you right click it brings up a comand menu that has only vertice commands. Wings makes it easy to focus on modelling.

Having said that don't rule Blender out. It is an extremelly powerful program. I use to think yuck my self but after fooling with it a while I began to see the Blender way as it were. There are some great sites out there with tuts for Blender: plus there is always youtube. Video tuts really speed up the learning curve.

If you do decide to go with Blender  check out blendercookie.com and blenderartists.org

Some of the things Blender can do

  1. model 2) render 3) animate  4) particle, cloth, hair and water simulation 5) a sculpting mode 6) bake normals maps 7) excellent UVmapping tools  8) really easy to learn rigging system 9) retopology...... and much more

and it's free :)

Well Good luck and if I can help you let me know.

I know if you can find a copy of the book that daz released it came with hex 2.5 for free.

Just a thought

The low polygon one... not long.
The high polygon one ... a little longer :)

How long for me to do it, or you to do it?

How long for a professional 3D artist or a competent hobbyist?

To what degree of detail do you require?
Fully modeled inner mouth parts?
Plain spheres for eyes or iris detail?
Include UV mapping?
Rigging?
Morphs?

I've known some projects taking years, other get knocked out in a week or over a weekend.

Note the time for it to be half completed then double it.

Honestly, your best guess is probably going to be correct.

@ vinous. A pro would be able to do either of your examples in a day.

@ Phil. I saw some glowing reveiws about your poser scripts over at DA.

@ o-q. Blender and wings for free. Low cost for metasequoia or hexagon. I can't strees enough, that when choosing, get an interface that you like. The features are less important.

I meant a professional modeller. No, these modells don't need any inner mouth, eyes or mimicry. They just should move their legs and arms...

And how much in time ti make a dinamic T-shirt or woman dress for example, with the "similar" quality as the mentioned pictures?

Moving their arns and legs or animation as its called is a completely different ball game.

What exactly are you needing? Does someone want to commission you to make a model and you are sounding out the "going rate" ? Or you need to put forward a budget proposal for a project? Or something else?

I'm happy to try and answer but in my opinion there is no going rate. It will depend on what the client wants to pay and what the modeler is willing to work for.

vinous there is a freely offered version of the lowpoly male mesh at cgcookie aka blendercookie under the freebies tab

making that mesh from scratch would take about 8 hours+ and involve costs of a minimum of $2000.00 for a pro

but once imported into blender rigging it and annimating it would be another hour or so without texturing it, materializing, sculpting, or even setting it up to be used in any other program

on my end it would run $5200 just to get it poser
