Subject: Weird artifacts, first time I have them... please help

fabiana ( ) posted Thu, 22 December 2011 at 12:13 PM · edited Tue, 05 November 2024 at 12:44 AM

Look this:

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/rrfilelock/download.php?fileid=45198&key=840

Inner side, the squares in the mesh... I am sure is caused by the AO but cannot find the way to get rid of them without:

1-Disabling the AO in the light or

2- change the material and uncheck the Normals Forward in the red fabrics... If I do that, then it looks bad, washed, not textured and of course not getting light or shadow...

I tryied different settings but when I get rid of the squares, then the AO effect on the close skin or other materials is lost.

The AO is featured in the IBL light, not image based, just a color...

Thanks :)

As far as I know Fabi, there is no way to get rid of those. AO will always bring them out. It drives me nuts as well. Have you tried turning down the Shadow Min Bias?

Yep, touched everything that is touchable, Laurie... weird thing... as soon as I put off the AO in the light, all looks fabulous... actually, with the indirect ligth it should be also unneeded, as well if using the AO in the skin materials or so also... well, we will need to live with that :)

Quote - I love to read entire conversations where I have no idea what the people are talking about.

If you look at the cape in the image, you can see shading where the edges are in the mesh. It's been around for a LOT of Poser versions - at least since Poser 6. Happens mostly on curved surfaces. No way I know of to get rid of them other than removing the AO on either the lights or the materials (wherever you have the AO set up). The AO causes this and I have no idea why nor why it's never been fixed. People have been seeing it for years. The first time I ever saw it was on Trav's Drapery props. Poser 6, about 2004 or 5.

Which version of Poser are you using, Fabi?

I realise you're trying to make items that work in most if not all versions of Poser, which will make removing AO from your item not really an option. I've noticed since I've gone to IDL (and messed with SMB) a lot of those problems have disappeared.

Yes Robyn... I am using now both Poser 7 and PP2012. As is new, and faster, and need to learn, I am using the PP2012 all the time... mostly because was way too expensive LOL so I will be using it till let it washed out LOL LOL :)

Removing the AO from the light is a solution... then for get the AO effect you need to add it to the materials OOOOOOOR finally say goodbye to the old AO and render using IDL... what makes the image MUCH better if you want the best quality. Takes a bit more longer but I like it... seems that there is not any other solution. Let me say that the mesh is certainly very optimized for Poser... it has the correct surface, number poly... and is behaving perfectly under all kind of lights... except when the AO does the trick. I have noticed this... the effect is ONLY seen in the inner side of the cape... the backfacing facets. And the occurrence is ONLY also when the AO settings in the lights are subtle., as for to get AO in the skin close to other elements, as a necklace, tight clothings... If you look for a simple AO, as it could be setted with the default values, then the effect is not visible at all. To me it appears as an incompatibility between backfacing polys and AO light's settings.

I neither understand why that never was fixed... but as long as we have a way to avoid it, with the IDL, then I think we have to live with it :P

Merry Xmas for all you people :)

AO is a left over from older Poser verions.
it was a tool to fake IDL for the older poser versions and it has its limitations.

IDL is what you want to use as from Poser 8 - PP2010, and certainly in Poser9-PP2012.

Poser 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, P8 and PPro2010, P9 and PP2012, P10 and PP2014 Game Dev

fabiana - did you use PP2012 with SR1?

There was a situation where this happened and SR1 solved it.

If you are using SR1 is there a way SM can reproduce it?

Final option, include 2 mat files, one with ao one without for those that want to use the IDL?

Poser 7 and PP2012: my all-time favourite versions! P7 was really, really the most rock-stable of Poser ever... it is still installed on my netbook so I can Poser if I travel. Of course, PP2012 is the version to try to beat, now: the feature set and improvements make it the most significant upgrade in the history of Poser.

Well, I think so, anyway! 😄

wimvdb:

No, still didn´t installed the SR1 because readed in some forums it has some bugs or things that were changing libraries and shadows display... so waited to see if those are fixed or if was just bad info.

About recreating: I am using my MildBoreal Lights. The AO settings in the sets that have AO enabled in the IBL light are the following:

AO strenght: 0.20

SceneAO Options:

       MaxDist: 0.06000
       Bias: 0.000130

I have noticed that what removes the occurrence is to raise the Bias to above 0.008 what is way too high for get an AO realistic and soft effect, IMO.

Robyn:

Yes, my 2 favorites ever... I am liking a lot the PP2012... what I like most is the Morph Tool, so far :)

Thanks to all for the input :)

Fabiana, look at this thread at RDNA http://www.runtimedna.com/forum/showthread.php?65515-Weird-grid-shows-up-with-raytracing-shadows-on

It pretty much looks like your problem and that one was solved in SR1

SR1 is a definite improvement. You can always reinstall the original by uninstalling Poser and reinstalling the original. (I have done that 100s of times during the testing)

Also, consider turning off smoothing and trying a render.

Bruce: Due to the holidays I had not the time to download and install the SR1 so still should have the trouble...

Winterclaw: Yes, did it and didn´t changed nothing :S

I will try today installing the SR1.

In the (advanced) material room, select the material which is showing the problem.  On the image map node(s), set the texture filtering to "none".  Try rendering again with IDL or AO, and let's see what happens. shrug

texture filtering - none

Thank you Bruce... will try it tomorrow morning... you know, when you more need all working fine, then a considerable amount of things start to go funky and make a mess... I lost my glasses, so I am squeezing the eyes all day long... till I can get my new ones tomorrow... then, to add more fun... I forgot that I will sponsor a newsletter and totally forgot to make the freebie... I just hope no one decides to make a joke on me and send me something that I also forgot to complete LOL...

Thank you, you always are a gemstone out there ;)
