Subject: Dynamic cloth question

Hi all,

 

Just another question re dynamic cloth. It seems like certain cloths attach to the figure, so when you move the figure, the cloth moves with it, whereas with others, although they seem technically parented, they don't move when you move your figure. For instance, I had a dress on Vic, after I clothified her and everything, I wanted to change her position. Her dress did'nt move with her; I saw that the dress was supposedly parented to her figure. Do I parent the dress to a specific body part? BTW I have P7.

Did you run a new cloth room simulation for the new pose?

Hmm, thanks, I'll take a look. This thing about certain clothes being attached or not seems to be intrinsic to each dynamic cloth. I verify this before I run any simulation. It seems that some are attached and some are not. Can't figure out why.

It is possible to save a dynamic cloth prop with or without parenting data.

Not to be confused with conforming clothing figures.

Oh BTW, love your stuff. Downloaded some yesterday. So if I load a dynamic cloth onto the figure, and the cloth remains in place when I move the figure, what would you suggest I do as far as parenting the cloth?

Looked at the tutorial, which was very interesting regarding wind dynamics. Still am puzzled about this silly, probably totally obvious question. I am new to Poser and am still finding my way. Thanks again.

When I create an item in Blender for Poser, and import that item (OBJ) into Poser, one of the first things I do is parent to the body part that seems most logical. It doesn't make sense to parent a blouse to a hip, or a skirt to a chest.

Are you expecting the cloth to follow every pose of the figure?

I just had the same situation yesterday. I have three V4 figures in the scene. All three have dynamic clothing. When I moved two of the figures after running the simulation on all three of them, the cloth was attached. When I moved the third, it was not. I just selected the cloth and parented it to the figure and it moved with her just fine.

Did you parent it to all of the Vic figure, the body, or a specific part?

To the body.

Edit: When I moved the figure, I selected the body and used the dials to move and rotate it into the position I wanted. I do not know if this makes any difference, but I wanted to let you know.

Oops, little problem. I click on the drapery, and it is impossible to parent to Vic, since apparently it already it parented. When you click on Vic and check out her props, the drapery shows up, but for some reason it does not move when I change her position. It is working on her dynamically perfectly fine, but if I want to pick her up and plop her someplace in the scene with the drapery, I can't. I have to move the drapery manually to cover her again. I can do it, but it is a pain...

Basically, to give you all a clearer picture of what is happening:

I load Vic, and click her figure

I load a dynamic drapery onto her

I start a new simulation, clothify, set collision points

calculate dynamics

my figure looks good with the adjusted dynamic cloth

If I want, though, to pick her up and move her to another position in the scene, the cloth remains where it was originally. I have to carefully maneuver it back over her body as it was in the original position. With other cloths, theyc move with Vic, so I don't have to go thru this process.

Being a person that has delt with Poser glitches for many years, here is a something that may or may not work:

  1. Select the dynamic clothin in question.

  2. Change the parent to "Universe"

  3. Now change the parent back to the figure it was on originally.

  4. Try moving the figure.

This is the only thing I could think of. I am used to trying just about anything to get Poser to do what I think it should do. If it does not work, it will be up to someone with a lot more knowlege than I have. And those people are here.

Thanks Toxic, will give it a try. I had a bit of a side question for you folks. If I have my girl wearing a dynamic skirt, and I want to give her some conforming panties, do I add the panties to the collision points?

Yes. I would. Otherwise you'll have a tonne of poke-through. Mind you, depending on how you set Collision Offset and Depth, you're gonna have significant VPL. Is it crucial she wear panties?

VPL contributes quite nicely to realism, though!

This is true, Moriador... need to be extra careful with your Collision Offset and Depth settings, in this case, or your girl will look like she's wearing adult incontinence disposables. Not a really good look.

Since I use Blender as an adjunct to Poser when I'm either designing my own clothing from scratch or converting existing conforming cloth to dynamic, I've found that i get better results in my sims to add a bit more mesh - discrete, not global - and then I can have lower Collision Offset and Depth settings, typically .22 and .18, to start with. I tend to dial them down (less) from there. Having those extra polygons can make the difference.

Haha... I've deleted quite a few of such simulations. But I never did come up with an alternate story to explain them. Poor woman. I should dress her in looser clothing when she's having these.... troubles.
