Subject: tattoos across seams?

is there a trick to putting a hoochie tattoo on Miki 3's back?  or Anastasia?

magic wand tool the empty space, layer, i doan know.  logic is falling down.

the tattoo goes across the seam.

"oh Miki, you're so fine"  smacks self to stop the retro song  lol

Do you have ZBrush? If so do it in that.

Amigo968 ( ) posted Wed, 21 March 2012 at 12:17 PM

Or in Cinema over Bodypaint.

MistyLaraCarrara ( ) posted Wed, 21 March 2012 at 12:20 PM

i wish for it, but no Zbrush.  i have photoshop elements. photoshop 7.

i was thinking, with the wand tool, i could cut the tattoo in a layer to match the template seam, then shift the pieces over.

the theory works better in imagination.

is the back seam straight up and down?  or is it curved?  i was doing one there for M3, and the sucker is curved :X

with photoshop CS4 (or any with obj support, i suppose), you can create the tattoo as a shape or layer over top the 3d model, then 'drop' it onto the UV map.  robin wood has a tutorial on that:

http://robinwood.com/Catalog/Technical/PhotoshopTuts/PhotoTutPages/CS4-3D-4_Paint.html

if the seam is straight, you can create the tattoo on a new layer -- two new layers, actually, and stick half onto the uvmap from either side.  but it's a tonne easier when you can see where it is on the 3d model at the same time, which is what i used to do with fractal painter 3d.  which came free on the poser 4 cd in ages gone by, i think.  (or poser 3, maybe.)

modo can also drop (or shoot) a texture onto a model.  i dont know if blender can...

what tools do you have for painting and creating the tattoos?

MistyLaraCarrara ( ) posted Wed, 21 March 2012 at 12:25 PM

i wish for Cinema also, and vray plug in.

if the theory could work, i want to tattoo art P4 man, also.  My project needs statuary, better than doing it from scratch.

i actually tried installing the Painter program from the P4 cd.  the menus show XX instead of menu names.  there was a helpfile about 2gb drive limits for the program to work.  so i tried to install it on a 1gb flash drive.  it didn't work.

the only painter utility i have is what comes with Cararra.  but i don't know how to use.

the tutorial sound promising.  thanks for the link!

oh, I don't have CS4.  sigh

Blacksmith3D and Decal Master will also do the same thing.  If you go the Photoshop or GIMP route, use the UV map template to align the tats.  It will be a pain because you will need to skew and resize the tattoo map and double check for proper seam and alighment placement.

If your tattoo is on a white background it can be done fairly simply
  1. position/scale the tattoo to fit the uv map where you want it

  2. using color math (multiply) the existing texture and the tatoo

also you can use the free shaderworks utility to go across seams

how does anyone manage to fit photos of skin across these seams, let alone a tattoo?

For me, worth the investment: Decal Master @Daz.

I don't know about anyone else, but I, Photoshop, and the texture template of the thing I needed to have seams crossed, got very close.

I have never counted so many points up and over and down and out, zooming in and out, rotating.....

Perhaps they used UVMapper. How? I don't know. Decal Master works for me.

Prepare the image you want as a tatoo or decal.

Fire up the program

Load your model, load your prepared image, place the image on the model, rotate, scale, move to where you want it, write out the new texture file. It works for me.

These two images used Decal Master. The stars on the Wonder Woman suit cross seams and the emblem on Mermaid's boots cross seams.

i don't understand what you mean by writing out the texture file?

the face room can save a texture file.  too bad the face room can't do the whole body.

I've done it by hand on the Gen3 figures in Photoshop.  Same with texturing with regular skin.  It takes time, patience and a steady hand.  You can cut your workload down a little by mirroring one side of the tattoo when you have it to your liking on the left, for example.

snowsultan made a seams guide for V4.

There prolly isn't one for Miki3 or Alyson2 or Aiko3.

the conclusion is there is no solution with an old Photoshop, to make tattoos fit across seams.

poser can offset a tattoo, but i don't see a way to rotate a tattoo.

maybe if i just keep tweaking the image offset value and see how it sits across the seam?

but then there is no way to export from Poser.

And you can do tweaking with UV Mapper, but, IIRC, the free version only accepts bitmap format textures.

Same thing, really.  Do lots of test renders.  It really helps to have a seam guide, which is something I forgot to mention.  Search for SnowSultan and you'll find 'em if you don't already have 'em.

awesome info on how to use the blend nodes.  Thanks! i always wondered how to use a transparency mask in blending two images.

still has the original problem though

3. Decals won't work across UV seams. For example putting a logo across Vickie 3's back is a pain.

If you can live with the fairly low resolution of the demo version of blacksmith3d Paint, it can make the cross seam images to use.  This image crosses neck and torso.

It's a pain, but not impossible with a copy of the same image at each side of the seam,  and since it is within Poser, you can see the results quickly.

Can it be done in Carrara?

can the collada export help in any way?
i don't understand what it does, beyond making poser content ready for 3rd party programs somehow.  (i don't see an import collada option.)

if i offset an image in the material room, can it export any kinds of 'baked' texture map?

3D-Coat is another good option. It's pricey but not as much as body paint or z-brush.

If you don't intend to use it for commercial purposes you can get it for $99.

Although if all you want to do is put Tattoos on figures then Decal master is probably your best option for the price.

heyas;

the free app that is similar to zbrush is sculptris.  and no, you can't do this in that program.  sculptris will entirely re-do the uv map and lay it out in scattered pieces with no stretching, but that results in an entirely human-unreadable uv map.

i have an old tutorial for help with the painter 3d from p4, and the XX's and all.  you would be especially interested in the copying/pasting/floating/nudging section at the bottom, which is how i made tattoos across the seams.  but again, if its a CURVED seam like on michael 3, this won't really help.  the seams need to be straight.

mystic...  postwork?  like not on the skin, just on the render?

i've had some success putting a tattoo on a figure in photoshop, using shapes.

http://bloodsong13t.deviantart.com/gallery/34735447#/d4ph2iv  (contains nudity, so probably wont display if you dont have a devart account.)

http://bloodsong13t.wordpress.com/2011/12/13/zevrans-tribal-tattoos/  (will work too)

it's do-able; depending on how much shape-manipulation your version of photoshop has.  for example, you could make all those butterflies a new shape or raster layer very easily.  but look at the 2nd one down.  it has foreshortening where it curves into the dip of the spine.  so you'll have to 'smush' one of its wings.
you always need to 'bend' the overlying tattoo to follow the surface of the skin.  unless it's a really straight-on shot.  you'll also need to experiment with the blending of the tattoo layers and the underlying skin.  when i was doing zevran's tattoos in the example, i found it worked best to get the ink UNDER the skin by erasing down parts of the tattoo layer that were over highlights on the underlying layer.  i was pleased with the results of that.

mysticeagle ( ) posted Sun, 25 March 2012 at 7:31 AM

ideally i'd love to be able to put it on the skin so its more flexible within posing and anim work, but i have to admit, i've never tried creating my own texture maps, call it laziness or just call it no idea where to start lol

Sculptris can paint directly on the model. I can not attest to the quality though. I've never used it for painting.

Edit: Ah! I see bloodsong already pointed out the failings in painting with Sculptris. Cool.

Teyon ( ) posted Sun, 25 March 2012 at 11:32 AM

If you have UVLayout, it would take almost no time at all to straighten the border of the back. I don't know why I didn't do that at the time... An oversight on my part to be sure. Anyway, you could totally do that. It wold make her incompatible with existing texture sets though, so you should do it on a copy if you do it at all.   Hmm...had to be a reason why I didn't do it.
