Subject: Material Room - Texture Manager HELP!!

johnthepatriot ( ) posted Tue, 24 April 2012 at 10:46 PM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 8:10 PM

Okie dokey... I have been using Poser 7 since it came out, but a few details still elude me and I am hoping someone here can help out.

In the Material Room, when you click on a texture to change it, you open the Texture Manager dialog.  If you use the drop down, it shows all the textures you have previously used.  How do I clear this?  With some project templates characters I am using this is getting quite large, and I would love to be able to clear it.

Alternatively, if someone can tell me how to delete the TRANSLATION dials on a character's feet, I would just start from scratch more often and quit using the same template characters over and over.

Thanks in advance :) JTP

You should only see the XYZ translation dials if you have IK turned on for that part.

To get rid of unused textures in list, you have to save your scene and exit Poser.  When you open again they should not be there.

Thanks :) But... what is "IK" and how do I turn it off?

And yeah, about the textures, I have saved and reloaded some of these figures several dozen times over the last 4 years.  The file retains textures on the Texture Manager drop down that I have not used in that long.

Could you please show what you are refering to with the texture manager? A screen shot would be helpful.

The most common cause of "phantom textures" is that you have somehow applied the wrong material pose to some object and it creates a material zone not actually used. Like applying a clothing texture to a figure, you will end up with extra materials from clothes.

The only ways to get rid of these is to reload offending object or hand edit them out of the PZ3 scene file.

You can get rid of IK as attached picture

I'll work on a screenshot for the texture issue.

As for the Kinematics response, I believe that will fix my issue.  I can just make new template characters.  Been wanting to for awhile anyway.

The Texture Manager is the window that opens when you click on a texture map in the Material Room.  For example, if you click on the Diffuse Color texture map, it opens the texture manager.  The drop down is right above the "browse" button.  The listed textures on that drop down is what I am referring to.

Best I can tell from 2 days of scouring the 400 page user's manual, this is some kind of damn texture cache... but I can find no way of emptying (read: clearing) it.

I took your advice and tried deleting and closing... and several textures remained (I know the "toon" textures are basic and will always be there).

Thanks both of you for the response :) I'm off to go rebuild my templates.  It's a considerably less frustrating fix (and it was so easy!  /Facepalm).

Oh? You mean the 'directory' listing of your textures?

The texture cache should be located in something like

Documents and Settings/YOUR_USER_NAME/Local Settings/Temp/Poser/PoserTextureCache

It should empty when you exit program.  I have had occasion when it didn't empty completely, but the new scene didn't see them anyway.

If you can't find the cache, use Windows Search function to look for files of type ".exr", then maybe you can narrow down to proper folder.

What you see when you hit browse is not what is in memory or in the cache.  That is a directory listing on your computer.

Just to clarify about "phantom" textures, sometimes people apply material to wrong object and it will create a listing for a new material zone.

The new zone will have dimension of zero so you will not actually see referenced texture or shader.

In attached picture, I show V4 that accidently got extra material zones.  For the most part, the should be no entries after "Preview".

If you find any, they are suspect until proven otherwise.

The OP did not say he hit browse.  The listing is above the browse function, that shows what Poser thinks is currently loaded (may not be totally accurate)

which is why i asked for a screen shot at the start of this thread.
