Subject: Rendering glass

I remember not long ago LaurieA asking around about rendering glass.

Today, I downloaded Blender 2.63. I did this tutorial on Cycles, which included making the items in the image and making the materials for them.

Set up this "room", set up some lights and a camera and rendered. All of this took roughly an hour and a half, because I'm slow. And pedantic. The render was set to only 500 samples, so it is a bit grainy and there's a bit of fireflies artifact (like Lux):

The image is under-exposed - this is my first-ever play with Blender where a render came out looking half-way decent, so colour me thrilled - and there's a few other things not right with it, but for an hour-and-a-half's work, I'm quite excited. Particularly the glass has got me impressed. So, I'm looking at my beloved Poser and wondering. What would it take... :unsure:

What would it take in poser? uh bagginsbill. :biggrin:

I know that he has a couple of glass shaders that are pretty good and I saw another thread about glossy or reflective stuff that could do the ceramic. I'm not sure about the table. Is it veneer or actual wood? Where the grain on the edges doesn't meet with the grain on the top and the surface has no bumpmap to it it looks like veneer or laminate. (this isn't meant to be critical just observing. it's a very good veneer) Baggingsbill has a wood available in matmatic. I've never used it so I can't speak from exeriance, but based on his reputation, it's most likely very good. I'll bet you can remove any bumpmap in it if you are going for veneer.

Looking forward to trying to get to grips with Blender now I got a better computer. So far have printed out the key-strokes cheat-sheet for it and stuck it on my wall...

A pointer to a good wood mat room recipe for Poser would be great...

...anyone got wood for Poser?

Bagginsbill has amazing wood for Poser. Just do a search on his name and wood...

@RedPhantom: it's a very easily applied material that I followed in these instructions... Step #31...

I know enough to realise Bagginsbill most likely has already done something mind-blowing here, of course!

But I've been doing a fair bit of Googling and trawling forums, to try to find any of his past posts on this specific subject... relative to one model, in particular, that I was trying my hand at re-texturing in order to get better / customised close-up renders... but so far, no wood :-(

Probably, I just can't see the wood for the trees... there are such a lot of posts by BB on all sorts of different mat room points to find one's way through. It's so easy to get caught up and distracted by other interesting shader threads found on route!

I was especially trying to find "IDL-friendly" wood...

Any pointers from anyone to key BB posts on wood would be hugely appreciated...??

Poser can do the surface effects quite well, and the PPro2012 fresnel-node might be an extra to that.

Unfortunaly, IMHO, Firefly lacks all proper real raytracing effects. Therefore we can't do caustics, colored shadows nor volume / thickness driven coloring. We do need LuxRender or so for that.

There as some things that Cycles can do, that firefly can not.

But at the same time, I have no doubt that BB has a way to get around that.

That's right, meatsim... Blender 2.63 is like a new, exciting toy, so many goodies to play with. :biggrin: I'm trying to stay focused on making hybrid dynamic/conforming clothing for Poser, but the materials available in Blender are so side-tracking me. I just can't believe how good glass is. Work has been pretty crazy - three staff have left to work elsewhere due to... nevermind, don't wanna bore ya :blink: - so very little free time these days, but I simply can't leave Blender alone...

it's a  blender render?  to correct the refraction of the pitcher in poser, use bill's thin glass shader or the one that comes with the free wine glass from his site.

Yes, MN, that was a Blender render, using Cycles.

This is a Blender Cycles render, using the GPU:

The tutorial served to emphasise why I prefer PDFs to videos: it was easy to follow / study. I like to ponder concepts. Can't do that with a video.

Cycles does suffer from 'fireflies' when rendering 'glossy' items  - I've edited them out in this render.

Cool. Yeah I prefer a document to a video usually too, RobynsVeil.

What kind of spec of graphics card are you running to achieve that result? It uses the GPU on this, am I right?

 

I searched some more... but still no recent wood for the latest Poser that I could see :-(

However I did find mention by Bagginsbill that he had some new wood, that he showed off in a fairly recent (November 2011, I think) thread at RDNA, in a queue ready to go to the marketplace...

So I have wishlisted that in my head... ;-)

Am I right in thinking that matmatic would give me wood of some kind?

I have been lame getting round to checking out matmatic properly... I really must.

Bagginsbill provides a wood shader (as well as other shaders too) with matmatic. I think you'd be surprised how sraight-forward it really is. Python is such an elegant language. 😄

I'll give you the specs on my machine in the morning: typing on my Thrive, too knackered to bring up my system atm... :blink:

Regarding the wood, are you asking for:

  1. The reflection behavior of wood

or

  1. The procedural pattern generator of wood grain

On the former, I've shown BBGlossy with blurred reflection - that is wood.

On the latter, that's a secret. grin

Thanks for the info... yes I will definitely make matmatic top of my Poser to do list now.

Wood aside, I think it sounds like it would also save me a lot of time re-texturing the fairly large and complicated model that I have in mind to replace the mats for...

Hmm, i might have benn wrong about the wood, then. Oh well, there's always Blender. Might be something to explore once i get a bit more familiar withe the Cycles 'mat room'. 😄

i do remember this long thread dating back to 2006, was it? wherein BB discussed this wood shader... which sort-of petered out. No shader, at the end of it.

Have you guys looked at this page, regarding wood?

The "shader" part of that is not so good, but the pattern generator is usable.

As I said, the shading of polished wood is BBGlossy.

He he... thank you Bagginsbill... and to Dreamland as well. It looks like a lovely set to begin with and I'd obviously noticed it there in the promo renders when I got the car.

But I sort of suspect those wooden bench seat shaders will prove spot on for what I was looking for to re-texture that other model with too.

The patio bench has a color map - I just put the BBGlossy shader on it. Well - did a little more - the damp and wet wood are new. I never told anybody how to do that. 

There are actually quite a few nifty shaders in that set. The puddled stone is pretty cool, IMO.

Thanks Bagginsbill - yeah, I realised the grain there was via a colour map node... as opposed to being generated from procedural patterns... something that would indeed be cool to see in due course ;-)

Actually, its several different colour maps, providing variation I see... its the exact working example I needed just now.

I suspect the damp and wet woods will be great for re-texturing the sail ship I was originally after wood for...

...and yeah it was that puddled stone that I thought was particularly awesome in the promos for the car :-)

Several different colors, but all are the same gray map. Examine the technique I used to stain the wood. It's pretty nice. It's a Color_Math : Bias node.
