Leather Bound.....This one took several days to get everything just right, despite the fact that there are only two models and a backdrop! Had trouble getting the leather gear to render in Lux, had to make some tweaks to make it happen, used only a mesh light, curved light, and IBL....

I'm having some trouble with Optitex' Dynamic Clothing and Reality.  It's the M5 Stringer tee-shirt.  I draped on M5 and then went straight to Reality.  It's showing the mesh very badly, angular spots where the light hits it.  I tried freezing it, but it doesn't help.  Is there a way to smooth this out or fix it?

superboomturbo ( ) posted Sat, 09 June 2012 at 10:28 PM

Sorry, going to block comment; Outlaw, and John3d, thank you greatly for your work on the sabers. I blame you both as now I will have to try them!

Sandman, I've had this happen too. What I do when setting up the cloth is the usual fit to character, then scale up the cloth piece til' its way bigger than the character (at least large enough that nothing touches the beneath) and drape as usual. It's fixed most of my issues when going to Reality/Lux.

If you've got a screen shot, I can be even more helpful

Superboomturbo and anyone else who has downloaded the Lightsaber, I have updated the morphs and added a new one. So please download it again from the same location, 3doutlaw's hold pose still works with it :)

Bored now, what can I make next ?

Ogie! I haven't loaded it yet, had to work on a render project for my brother-in-law's birthday present. Thanks again!

Edit: Oh hey, while you're around, did this come with a saber or was it just the 'blade'? I looked at one while plopping it into a growing SW folder. This one was grouped with an Obi-wan saber and an orange blade, but was definitely modeled. I unzipped it with a bunch of stuff so I didn't really check what all was in the folder.

How about a set of studio lights or light rigs. So we can build photo studios ;-)

Mike from the Daz forum did a light ring, Mike005 I think was/is his handle on sharecg. It's pretty slick. ( I've actually used this one!)

Don't have any links for those, but I did come across a 35mm camera prop with a tripod. We'll have to see for light props. That is a cool idea though!

Without a screenshot it is difficult to know what the problem looks like but you might try 'mesh smoothing' on the freezed object. Then fiddle with the settings to see what works best. Don't forget to choose 'collide with'. :)

It IS a very nice image! Pose, expression and lighting are very good! You might want to give the hair a little bit of bump to get the reflection on it more natural.

Looks interesting, if you do not mind I will make the props and post them here one at a time rather than try to rush things.

Need a bit of help though, can someone please volenteer to test things for me, I'd hate to give people things which will not work as intended.

Here is the main prop, to give it a bit of variation I've added a few morphs.

Braintickler ( ) posted Sun, 10 June 2012 at 5:11 AM

Wow, you are quick. I can volenteer if help is needed.

john3d ( ) posted Sun, 10 June 2012 at 5:19 AM · edited Sun, 10 June 2012 at 5:24 AM

Superboomturbo - The LightSaber I did is the whole thing, but it has been morphed so it can be used with or without the blade. The morphs allow you to vary the length and thickness of the blade, I've also included a needle point one which may be useful.

Thanks Braintickler, I just need do a quick Reality render to check things out then I will get in touch.

sandman_max ( ) posted Sun, 10 June 2012 at 6:42 AM

I'll try resizing it.  I hero-size M5 and had to turn Fit-To off and move the tee-shirt around, so that may be the problem.  If that's still not working, I'll post screen-shots.

Here's a quickie, just testing out the costume I found.

Had trouble with the hair for some reason. Tried two different ones and both kept going through her.  I tried setting collision to Genesis and the shirt, but the hair kept going through her arm on both. Used Photoshop to get rid of the worst of it.

sandman_max ( ) posted Sun, 10 June 2012 at 12:53 PM

Paolo, I just got your tutorial and I"m working through it.  I'm up to Lesson 4 where we set the light gain of the new light groups in the DAZ Reality interface.  But they're not getting passed to LuxRender.   Am I doing something wrong?  The camera settings work fine.

Pret-a-3D ( ) posted Sun, 10 June 2012 at 1:33 PM

The light gains are indeed passed. If you refer to the fact that Lux shows the gain at 1.0 than be aware that that is not indication if the effective gain. The gain shown in the Lux UI is the gainfor the overall light group. Think of it as a multiplier for all the individual ligh gains in that group.

You have to look at the result, with the linear tonemapper, and you will see that changing the gain in Reality cha ges the brightness of a given light.

Hope this helps

Aha!! No wonder the render kept getting darker.  Every render, I'd change the light gain in Lux back to what I'd set it at in Reality. Thanks!

Here is the second of the renders I'm happy with so far, same scene as before, different angle.  I've not tried any of the tips recieved yet as this was already running (can only upload 1 image per day to rendo Gallery!?).  Needs to run longer to remove noise under neck but I'm so impatient that I had to upload anyway.

When you click the image icon on the format tool bar, a small window opens for you to input the URL of you image. after I input the image, I click on it and then go to the link option and it lets you create a link based off the image

Here is a test image I did based off a Boris Vallejo image I saw as a kid. Granted I would have to do lots of heavy postwork to match his style and get it close to the original, but I wanted to see how close I could come to what I remembered in an unbiased render with no postwork. (click for original)

The more I use genesis, the more I love this figure, so versatile.

Nice detail as always. I like the FR lighting effect I got in that pic.

I have been using genesis from the get go mostly due to the fact that I have the Face gen target morph for it. I use both 4th gen and gen..
