I just got a notice that Shade was free today only. Have any of you folks used it and if so, how does it stack up against the other free modelling options in regard to ease of use/learning curve/etc?

foxylady1 ( ) posted Wed, 04 July 2012 at 9:40 AM

Do you have a link basicwiz?

I used Shade at version 7 and thought it was great.ย  I lost track of it over the years, but would love to give it a try again.

I had a lot of models and used to try and replicate them for a learning experience.ย  A lot of that knowledge I had probably isn't any good anymore.

SamTherapy ( ) posted Wed, 04 July 2012 at 9:48 AM

I know a lot of the Japanese content makers have used Shade in the past but I don't anything about it.

A link would be great, since I'd like to try it alongside the other apps I have.ย

The link is HERE It's free Shade 10, Mac OSX or Windows.

Oh, and I got Shade 7 free with a Poser purchase (can't remember which one - 6 or 7). I used it to make a few things. Not too hard to figure out ;).

jerr3d ( ) posted Wed, 04 July 2012 at 9:57 AM

It was free before with Poser 5 or 6. Very nice program, the save files for Poser were HUGE though. Still a link would be great please! ^ ^

jartz ( ) posted Wed, 04 July 2012 at 9:57 AM ยท edited Wed, 04 July 2012 at 10:07 AM

Yes, a link please.ย  I had Shade I think version 6 or 7 when it was bundled with Poser 6

Whoops, x-posted... Thanks LaurieA

P.S.ย  Sorry for the confusion

I have shade Basic... I like it, just needs more of the features in Shade Standard and Professional editions ๐Ÿ˜‰

I switched to Hexagon when that became free. But I'd switch back to Shade I reckon, if I could get my grubby hands on Shade Standard, without parting with any more of the money I don't have anymore, due to spending it all already, largely on other CG software

Unfortunately I'm getting a processing error trying to proceed past putting Shade Standard in my cart... I've messaged the website support.

Is anyone else managing to download it?

Cheers ๐Ÿ˜‰

foxylady1 ( ) posted Wed, 04 July 2012 at 10:08 AM

I put it in my cart and checked out.ย  You have to wait for the email with the link.ย  It takes about a day to receive the link though.

Do you have an account there?ย  If so, just log in and you can put it in your cart.ย  There is no direct download.

jartz ( ) posted Wed, 04 July 2012 at 10:08 AM

When I ordered, it stated as "queued".ย  So I reckon I have to wait.

Yeah, they said on the site after order confirmation that they queue orders a few times a day during normal business hours.

I just got a processing error before.

However it has worked now... I suspect my issue was just the server had been busy before.

Excellent... I'll look forward to getting back into learning Shade some more then ๐Ÿ˜„

is shade a candidate for creating displacement maps and skin textures for use in poser? can you decimate and subdived imported mesh?

That would be more a job for something like 3d-coat or Zbrush. Sure, you can save the zbuffer, and I've done some displacement maps myself (for roof tiles and similar things).

No decimation algorithm inside Shade.

and it renderer unusably complicated & slow

I dont know anything about the new version
perhaps its been improved over the years.
YMMV

Well, the Shade 7 I got did make a coplanar when you did a lathe ;). But I used to remove it when I ran it thru UVM Pro...lol. If it could be removed in Shade I wasn't aware at the time how to do that. I'm a little more knowlegeable now. That will be the first thing I check ;).

Nope, still waiting here too.
Got it in the cart
got the invoice mail, but still waiting for the download link/mail. :-)

But I use hexagon and it does a pretty good job for what i am asking.
seemed unstable in the beginning, but that could have been me.

It has all the rings and bells including a decend displacement and soften tool. Plus soft selection and symmetry that I use a lot.

As you, waiting for the download link/mail.....

I was going to wait another day or so, then maybe ask Chikako about it in the Shade forum here perhaps. I think they might know some more about it...

I imagine they just have a lot of orders... and I think the download link release is being manually done, to some extent, by the looks of things.

I believe a note on the site said not to panic before 48 hours. If they received a heavy volume of requests, it could take longer. Of course if it's free, I just might end up with what I paid for . Won't sweat if it doesn't happen.
