Subject: Full Genesis - Poser compatibility may be coming

Quote - moriador, I agree exactly.  I will also buy lucas and use the SM figures when they arrive too.

the more the better.

Love esther

Same sentiments here. I'm right behind any alternative, quality Poser figure development.

But in principle, for the same reasons, I'd be all for Genesis being much more useable within Poser.

I want the widest choice I can get... and Genesis has a lot of good tricks up its sleave, for fantasy / sci-fi stuff... in terms of creature creation features... not to mention M4->M5 and V4->V5 asset inheritance, with it's UV swapping tricks, and also Kids and Teen character options...

That said, I do also hope the latter (more figures for portraying youngsters) will also come along in new forms of standalone Poser character too, to be honest, e.g. if Shane does manage to follow through with a whole family of figures, once he finishes Lucas and Lucas' female counterpart.

Also Genesis is by no means the only potential UV chameleon on the block. Okay Genesis is maybe the only one that can do it more dynamically? But if, for instance, dph is working on a way for My Michelle to take V4 skins, in practical terms, that sort of thing is probably just about as useful for me.

It's maybe only a matter of time before we see that sort of expertise captured in a "Skin room" plugin to automate this UV swapping process for all sorts of figures, using figure definitions like Wardrobe Wizard does??

It's all good in my book - and if something is done to the right level of quality and useability I'll definitely support it and see how far I can go with it 😄

I'm not after a Vicky killer by any means... bodysnatcher, well, that could work for me... on the side of a range of other options though 😉

Quote - .....I don't understand why more people don't use Carrara, it has had all the bells and whistles that are just now appearing in poser. Plus poser content is so easily integrated. Perhaps another evil plot by DAZ, but whatever. I'll still remain a loyal poser user... nice to have a more fully featured alternative, though.

Genesis? Couldn't really care... current DAZ studio doesn't run on my Mac, although Carrara 8 pro DOES which is weird. Was a little miffed when I heard V5 was only for DAZ but I've never actually utilized the genesis figure so listening to the opinions on this thread is kinda giving me a heads up. Frankly, if I need a monster I'll just sculpt one in Zbrush.

I used Carrara for a while. I was very impressed with the renders, but unfortunately my PC had a real dislike for it and it was a struggle to get anyhere. As far as I remember I gave up using it because there was no 64bit version at the time, or something so it's long dropped out of my workflow. Pity, because it was fantastic at shiny metal armour and realistic lighting. As usual Daz's lack of interest in their software was very offputting.

Genesis just offers nothing I want I need.

This is great news for people who are interested. I'm actually quite productive without genesis, and can't think of a reason why I would want to get it in poser. I think the only things that will get me to consier going back in the DAZ store are:

  1. F5 - Figure Gen 5. I would want a unimesh figure that's higher rez than Genesis, intelligently designed, and takes advantage of all Poser Pro 2012 has to offer

  2. I don't need DS installed to use it

It would be nice if there were a welcome back discount for all the people that ended their Platinum Club membership because of Genesis.

Ok... back to reality. I think there is going to be a Genesis plug-in for Poser which will use the new features in SR3.

DAZ has a history of over-hyping things that are happening 'soon'.

Half of me is prepared to be underwhelmed by something involving a long list of things I need to do (via plug-ins, scripts and who knows what else) to get Genesis to sort-of work in Poser.

The other half hopes they've learned their lesson (about over-hyping, if nothing else) and deliver something that 'just works' with no hoops for me to jump through.

If this is an import add-in which directy reads DS4 files and adds the weightmapping and texture conversion I would welcome it. If it also adds the ability to convert poses and props to Poser I would welcome it even more. This would eliminate the need to go through the DS4/exporter and PFE steps. Poser SR3 solved the scaling and joint issues, so that eliminated the need for additional scripts to correct them.

I don't think however that it will solve issues like the autofit tool and the low resolution mesh (unless it will actually import the subdivided mesh). But I am in for a pleasant surprise here.

I like to have choices and genesis is one of them.

vilters ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2012 at 8:01 AM

They finally make the Gen exporter a ONE click operation.
As it should have been in the first place.
I really do not expect a lot more then that.
Perhaps a higer mesh resolution, but I fear that would bring more problem then it solves.

All the rest??
When?
In some decades or so.
When this generation of Poser users will be in heaven.

It is what they say, no?

Mine as well!  Well said.

This year has proven one thing resoundingly.  We Poser users can live without DAZ products very well, thankyouverymuch.

It's obvious.  The Millennium Cube will be replaced by the Genesis Cube.  That will be the killer product that Poser users won't be able to resist.

Seriously...they're saying over there that SR3 adds a lot of Genesis compatibility.  I assume that means a Genesis plug in?  Perhaps one that lets you use Genesis figures without installing DS?

If that's true, I might give Genesis a try.  But only if it's cheap.  Honestly, there's so much going on in the Poser world these days, DAZ figures don't have the pull they used to.  I'm still learning my way around Antonia, WM-V4, etc.

Oh boy!  Anyone who has ever been on the DAZ Plugin wagon knows exactly how badly every upgrade of their software breaks every plugin out there.

As bad as DazStudio is, they simply compound the pain of using DS everytime they break the plugins.

Ask DS4.5 users how well their Reality plugin works right now.....

No matter how hard I try, I just can't see DAZ blinking and making a fully Poser compatable genesis.

That would mean that DAZ would have to admit that they completely misjudged the market.  Ain't happening.  DAZ has never once admitted that they were wrong, and I don't see that changing.  Their egos won't allow it.

Then there is the issue of Poser users going back to DAZ.  After the way Poser users have been treated at DAZ over the past year, I don't see the Poser community going back to DAZ with open arms.  A lot of distrust has been built up over the past year, and I don't think that a fully Poser-compatible genesis will erase all of the hurt feelings.

Sure we can live without Daz. The last months have proved that. However, one thing remains true: Daz figures have always been more morphable, better looking and better supported than any other figures before or since. That's what made them so popular. Now, I'm no Daz cheerleader by any stretch, but lets be fair: until you had to install a separate program to use Genesis - even to get it into Poser - we were all on the Daz bandwagon. If Daz made Genesis work in Poser somehow, most of us would be all over it, including the current naysayers. Maybe not for awhile - even a long while - but eventually. I'm not saying anyone is gonna forgive or forget. But if the technology is better (not saying it is, but it may turn out to be so), then people are naturally gonna want better and more versitile if it is available to them and available at a price they can afford. So "never say never" LOL. We can't know what's down the road. This may all be something Daz may think is great for Poser users and turns out to be a dud for the average Poser user ;).

Ah, follow my tutorial in the Hexagon forum, and you can morph any existing base mesh that is on Your HD into any figure you want; :-)

Failsafe, lean and clean, no file size increase either. :-)

Completely free, Failsafe, and all morphs the figure had before, still work just as they did before.

I'm not talking about me vilters, or my ability to morph or not. Not everyone dabbles in modeling, etc. Actually, I think MOST Poser and DS users do not. They're just end users and that's it. What I mean about morphability is the morphs available FOR the figure and the amount of them. Daz figures shone at that. Sorry if the truth hurts some ppl's feelings. I don't mean to. But if Daz figures weren't wildly popular in the Poser community, then why are 99.9% of us still using Vicky and Mike 4? Because of all figures so far, you can do more with them and find more available clothing for them. Hell, even vendors know any other figure other than Vicky or Mike isn't gonna make them any money for the work they do.

Laurie

ssgbryan ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2012 at 11:30 AM

I don't know about that LaurieA.  I have been looking closely at genesis - what I am seeing is that the clothing for genesis is either a repeat or a variation of V4 clothing.  We are now seeing repeats of characters, hair and shoes. The Gen3 & Gen4 figures were best supported.  The market disagrees with you about genesis.

The ability to repackage Gen4 characters, clothing, hair, and shoes for genesis is great for the vendors - I don't see the benefit for the end user.  Why should I buy Tauran 2 when I already have Tauran 1, or classic rolled hair for genesis when I have classic rolled hair for V4 or grace pumps for genesis when I have grace pumps for V4, well you get the idea.

And then there is the fact that genesis has been a bust - 1 year after release - when I run a search on the Daz store for genesis clothing I get a total of 283 items.  Daz had that much for V4 within 30 days of release.

Content for genesis is spotty at best outside of the Daz store. For example, most of the genesis content here at 'Rosity is made by 1 person, a year after genesis' release.

Which tells me that the vendors have rejected it.  Compare the switchover from Gen3 content to Gen4 content with the switchover from Gen4 to genesis.  Most Gen3 content disappeared within 6 months, whereas Gen4 content is still going strong.

I know in my case, I have only seen 1 outftit that makes me go "Hmm, maybe I need to spring for the genesis WW plug-in that PhilC made."

LaurieA ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2012 at 11:35 AM · edited Tue, 21 August 2012 at 11:37 AM

I was talking about the Gen 4 Daz figures, not Genesis. But the community has always welcomed new Daz figures. And I don't think, given a Poser compatible Mike and Vicky 5, that the Poser community won't jump on it. They WILL if the result is superior than what we've got now. However, Daz is gonna have to understand that we will NOT accept anything less than a version that works directly in Poser, without the installing or exporting from DS. Just ain't gonna happen. But if it does, the Poser community will welcome them back again.

Case in point - Reality 3 for Poser. People seem to be REALLY excited that there will be a way to get Poser scenes into Luxrender, even tho there has been a way for well over a year now. Maybe not as flashy, maybe not as easy to use. But not rocket science certainly. Now Paolo announces a version for Poser and people go nuts like it's something new. Even after they were told when the DS version came out that it couldn't be done for Poser. Things were said at other forums at the time and yet ppl act like it never happened. I see that again if Daz starts making Poser compatible figures again.

Oh, and ssgbryan...while I share a lot of your reservations about Daz in general, you have to admit that if there was also a Poser version of Genesis, the amount of Genesis content would then quadruple in the same amount of time ;).

Allow me to nip what could be a fire-fight in the bud.

This thread is about the release of a product "soon." We have hashed, rehashed and pounded the merits and faults of Genesis (too) many times before. The conduct of DAZ3D is not open to discussion here at Renderosity. I already allowed spleen venting once about Daz and its business practices, against my better judgement, and we don't need to do it again.

Be polite to one another and stick to reportage of the new release, please. We don't need another thread that I will ultimately have to lock.

I would also speculate that I think it would be fantastic to see a direct Genesis go into Poser without the parent application but I agree that I don't think we are going to see that (several opinion-based reasons but I'll keep those to myself).

I think what me might see is a DS Bridge to Poser via the modified Add-On architecture in SR-3.  So you'll set up whatever in DS and shoot it (seamlessly?) into Poser.  Like the Hex bridge or whatnot.  This is just a guess.

I had been thinking that perhaps the new plugin architecture may be perfect for something like Genesis, tho I have no idea at all if this is what Daz was talking about. But I think I agree with Netherworks. We'll still need DS and that just doesn't appeal for some of us, for differing reasons. :)

Mind you, there's been quite a lot of Gen3 content that was just reworked for Gen4 - especially M3/M4 items. That's one of the reasons I've bought very little M4 stuff - I already have most of the stuff I want in its M3 version and I can convert that if I need to. Not going to buy the same stuff over again.

Well - that and I prefer M3 to M4 any day! ;)

LaurieA ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2012 at 11:58 AM

Yeah, I'm with you. However, if Poser users had the capability to use Genesis like DS users I think vendors that had been sitting on the fence would then begin creating things for Genesis that wouldn't otherwise. Don't you agree? :) I'm certain of it.

Laurie

basicwiz ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2012 at 12:01 PM

I fully agree, Laurie. The larger the potential userbase, the more attractive it is to a vendor. Just common sense.

toastie ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2012 at 12:06 PM

Hmmm.... I dunno. I guess if you're making content for sale then you just go with what sells. Which looks like mainly still being V4. At the moment (from what little I've seen of Genesis content on the Daz site) it looks as though it's - Ok, that sold well for Gen3/4 so it should sell for Genesis. Can only hope some of the vendors fall off the fence onto the side with the new Poser figures and Anastasia! :)

Build something, and then show it.

Hypes tends to lead to speculations that go out of control FAST.

Why? Because we LOVE what we do.

I pretty sure some moderator a couple of posts up stated this thread was about news on Genesis - Poser? :-)

Not sure where a date was stated on when Miki4 and Tyler GND would be made available, but mid-August wasn't a part of our plan. We are locked into a date at the end of September. The figures are actually quite well developed and polished at this point, and based on reports from folks that have requested access and/or are currently developing supporting content, they look good. We're using the time between now and our release to give content developers a jump start to support both Miki and Tyler GND. Renderings are still in development waiting for some clothing items. I hope to have a few promos up and online on the Miki part of the Poser website before I vanish on a summer vacation end of this week.

I think with poser's single axis scaling now working, animated joint centers and weightmapping its quite possible for there to be a poser version of genesis that is not done via an exporter.  Perhaps with the plugin architecture they can bridge the remaining features of genesis.  Maybe a dubdivision plugin that you run on your composed/posed scene just prior to rendertime.  Maybe a plug in that allows you to poe and dress your figure then load it into your poser scene and render...  There are lots of possibilities.

I'm not going to be one of those who will 'never' use genesis or daz products regardless, but I am going to be one of those customers who will need to see significant value over my crrent library to embrace that new figure line or any other.
