I'm starting on a head. Never made one before. Am I doing this right? The Creature of Legend

heyas, nice start. what software are u using? does it have subpatches? i can see a 5 point polygon in the nose...if u are going to use sub patches u gonna have some problems because of it. but i think that the proportions are ok and i would suggest u to delete one side of it, complete one part of the head and then mirror weld it together. it saves lots of times in making things similar. please keep posting ur wip so we can see how things are improving. see ya.

I'm using 3D Studio Max. What's a subpatch? I'm kind of new to 3D modeling. <:) CoL

subpatch is in max the meshsmooth i think.its when the program smooth all the square edges of ur model giving a more organic look to it. i dont know how it works in max but i'm pretty sure its the meshsmooth engine. see ya.

it looks like you got a nice looking model there :-) ,, however, just a hint, if possible in your program,, try to make just one half of the face, ie. left or right side, and then add all the detail u need such as eyes, mouth and so on,, and when you are satisfied, mirror that half you did to the other side and *voil ,, instant head :-) just make sure to attach the two half in to one, if needed in your software ,, just a tips for you :-) later

Thanks guys :) I'll do the mirror thing. It's just that a lot of itmes before you join the two halves in the end, there's a visible middle line, and I'm trying to do the nose right now and it looks kind of confusing. I'm having trouble with the nose. I've circled the weird area. Is that what you mean about 5 or more sided polygons making trouble when mesh smooth is applied, loganarts? How can I fix it?

beyondMyth ( ) posted Sat, 08 September 2001 at 5:54 PM

from what i can see you might have some polys/points overlapping slightly,, try to tweak those inner points that you have circled a bit :-) later

beyondMyth ( ) posted Sat, 08 September 2001 at 5:57 PM

oh, and yes,, you seem to have a 5 point poly as well,, try to "triple" it using the triple command in your software or likewise :-) later

TheCreatureOfLegend ( ) posted Sat, 08 September 2001 at 5:58 PM

I tried that, but it doesn't do much good. I tried turning edges too. Doesn't work :(

loganarts ( ) posted Sat, 08 September 2001 at 6:01 PM

i can see u found the meshsmooth stuff huh? the nose is goin great and what u can do about the 5 point poly is try to transform this 5 point poly in 2. one triangle and one quad.or use a tool that triple the polys. i dont know where it is in max or how to do it in there but it is possible for sure u just have to find out how. try to delete the 5 point and select the points u want and use a tool like "make pol" or something. then the problem will de solved. another important hint is when u have triangles in ur model u'll see a weird node in the poli normal(the poli's visible face). dont worry about that, ur model is fine its just an openGL error. it wont appear in ur final render. have fun and post more wips i love them. see ya

beyondMyth ( ) posted Sat, 08 September 2001 at 6:03 PM

ok, one other thing you could check,, is,, make sure the points in each poly in the circled area are not too twisted so the poly turns out bad,, i know i had that problem in a model once,, later
