Whoah, I had a lot to catch up on here.

SBT congratulations to you and your wife! May you both be blessed with years of happiness with the new love in your lives.

Everyone has been doing some really great renders.

Abi, both your angel renders are wonderful. Terrific job.

John3d your coke can and glasses are amazing.

I'll have to get back to rendering soon, after seeing all these I'm feeling a bit guilty. But but, it's not really my fault. Honest. Well....okay so it is my fault....I've been  playing Guild Wars 2. Hangs head in Shame  I just can't help it!  Didn't someone here say they played too?

Did someone say Node Instance(s) work in Reality? Or will that be in R3?

Abi, that one with the grass is phenominal! And I mean WOW! I definitely need to check that grass prop out!

Sharky, love the 'last round' one too. The figure looks good, but my .02, the gun and cartridge could use a little finesse.

John Woo's 'The Killer' also had a quote about the last round. "I save the last. Either for myself, or my enemy". Great shoot 'em up with a real story. His American films stink compared to his earlier Hong Kong era. Spent a few bucks importing most of his team-ups with Chow Yun-Fat and it took forever to find a subbed Bullet in the Head,  before they came out on Region 1 DVD's.

Add: And thank you Xandi! I wondered what happened to you as well!

Ah, now I remember. Abi, you're image reminded me of a scene I've been thinking of duplicating for the longest time. I have a desk-sized statue on my writing table sculpted after the much larger Angel of Grief monument. It even made an appearance in one of my much earlier novels, as I have a thing for Greek and Roman statues carved from marble and alabaster. Had I a garden large enough to contain them, I'd love to add to my collection, but renders prove to be more affordable ;-) . Reference here: http://www.designtoscano.com/product/code/DB1111.do#

Oh wow!  I have another render in mind using that exact statue, been thinking of it for a while but I cannot find a good 3d model of it anywhere!  My alternative scene is to use a standing angel statue (the one's you often see, wings folded, hand together, head bowed) but thats all the info your gonna get til I produce the finished render.   I have a few gothic/amgelic render idea's floating around but that is the first and the one I want to do the most too.

Everyone...

Thanks for all the fanatastic comments about my angel scene, I loved creating it and I love the ego boost you have all given me!  hehe

That place has tons of cool goodies Abi, most waaaay overpriced. :-)

On the statue render, it'd be pretty easy to simulate a statue with just concrete or a flat plaster texture of apppropriate size for your V4 skins and wings. That's what I planned to do anyway. I've used something similar awhile back for these guys: Just used a 12mp camera shot of nice, smooth concrete, scaled it up for 4K and made some maps.

What a great site!!! I love the Egyptian themed stuff! I already have a tastful selection of daggers, swords, helms, and artifacts around my apt now, but I can see adding some of the items from this site. My old roomate and I had a sweet place about 10 years ago with lots of medeival stuff like full suits of armor, he will love this link.

I just picked up some new hair sets from Mairy & 3Dream (they were among yesterday's featured artists at the DAZ PA sale)

Tori with Eurydice Hair 2 styles

This one is Eurydice Hair ( 2 styles), an older product I have been wanting to try out. I think it looks pretty good for out-of-the-box(no bump, displacement or normal maps)

Once I get a copy of CrazyBump I will make bump maps for the set I think.

Meanwhile, I seem to remember someone (Paolo maybe?) posting about using the diffuse texture as a bump map? Anyone have details on how to go about this or maybe alternate methods of making a bump/normal map from the Diffuse? I used to have Randall's homemade bump map to fall back on at least, but lost it in my recent HD restructuring. ( I think I accidently deleted the folder it was in sigh hope that's all I lost lol)

I liked the hair results enough to try it out in my close-up shot:

Tori with Eurydice Hair - Close-up

I like the way it turned out, what little of it you can see looks good to me. What do you guys think of the hair?

Reworked my previous render to be more accurate to the original inspiration (i.e. an angel)...

Angel's Cry

"An Angel languishes over the grave of her love, holding the, once gift of a rose that refuses to whither."

I have one more idea to run with this image (thanks John) but I think I'll do something different first - this image is getting repetitive!  hehe

Enjoy,

Abi.

I use PixPlant's photoshop plugin for mapmaking.. it makes normal, spec, diff and disp maps.. as well as being able to take a seed picture and generating a tilable texture out of it(as long as there's a repeating pattern in it).  Works like a charm and isn't crazy overpriced.

For us underfunded artists, here's some bump options that are free: (reposted from page 21)

On the next page, someone also mentioned SSBump Generator. I did finally install and try it out some time ago, but for whatever reason, it's very finicky on my machine and stalls out when making maps. Might work for someone else though!

Okie dokie; For a bump map with gimp (2.6 is the latest I have for stability) with your base image, load as usual and go to colors, invert. Then go to colors again, move down to Components, and mouse click on the extension Channel Mixer. A pop up box will show the red, green, blue channels and some sliders beneath it. You'll want to check the monochromatic to put it into black and white. You can further adjust the RGB values if you want more black or white, but for a bump, the standard readout should be fine.

When you're satisfied, click OK, then go up to Filters at the top and drop down to Maps. Mouse over the extention to Bump.

Another box pops up with some adjustments.

In the pop-up box, there's a few things to play with. I usually focus on Elevation and Depth. Both are fairly self explanatory. You'll have to raise both typically, sometimes around 50 for elevation and 20-30 for depth. Experiment a bit. When you're satisfied, hit OK and a green bar goes across the bottom for processing. Two or three seconds, voila! Bump map.

If or when you should go the Normal map route (search for the plug-in, it's free also), you can use this same method to make it a bump map, then go to Filters-->Maps-->Normalmap (this is how it looks in the window). In the normal map pop-up, the default Filter should say 4 color in a selection box at the top.

Then the elevation is replaced by Minimum Z (in hundreth's or thousandth's of a value, like .001, or .01 etc).  Then there is Scale, which quantifies the effect. 2-5 should be plenty. If your texture is going seamless, click wrap. Check your preview box, and if you like it, hit OK. Another processing green bar, then you should get that lovely, purple normal map.

I usually save them in the same folder as the source texture and name it xxxx_bump or xxx_normal, just so they're all handy to select when you get to Studio. They also transfer right along into Reality!

I love the Eurydice hair.  It's one on my favorites that I use all the time.

And to join the bump/normal discussion below, I'm using the NVIDIA normal map filter plugin for Photoshop. It's free, easy, and I think the majority people here have Photoshop.
