A revisit to an earlier image I did. I have had to recast the main character as Tessa's hair fit is screwed by DS4.5

The wall is a mix material and has a normal map as opposed to a bump map for the original.

As with the first time around, very nice.  I love the work you did on this wall.

I will call this Doc's girl.

I hope I'm doing this right, it's the first image I have posted in here.

Really nice! She is to nice for one of Docs girls, someone needs to give her a reality check, LOL.

Agreed, but she is all woman and won't listen to a thing I have to say. It must be Doc's English charm or BS, not sure which.

Reggie.. love the render and the theme of it.  If one was to listen to the often-coded job titles; the recent attack on our embassy in saw the deaths of not just the ambassador; but, the navy seal who was his security detail(most likely a SEaL detailed to DipSec) and the Foreign Service Officer for the embassy.  It is the latter who was an Air Force vet who served as an information management officer at various embassies.  That position(information management officer) is usually state department code for "resident CIA guy."  So, another blue star will probably go up soon.

Decided to try my hand at a bit of basic modeling in preparation of my upcoming solidwords and unigraphics classes.  Did this wine glass in Hexagon(i know i know.. but it's easy).  Still trying to get a grasp on making my materials list look like the ones in other props I see but I still have one phantom material listing that isn't in the wine glass.  In reality, gave the base a low gloss chrome material, a higher gloss gold for the stem and hyper-realistic glass for the bowl.  No complex lighting or scenery.  Just sat it on a plane with an ibl for lighting so I could get some uber fast render times.  Next up for me to try is a beer stein w/my family crest on it.  Still need to learn how to UV map an object in Hex.  And work on w/e it is that's screwing with my material listing.  Other than that, I'm pretty happy with it as it's the first thing I've ever modeled in Hex.

Only let it render to about 1100 passes.  I was looking more for the quality of the shape of the glass; not the look of the materials on it.  We all know what Reality and Lux can do the look of anything.

It was originally created around a year ago as part of a series of film style posters I was doing and an experiment into Mixing materials. The wall is actually a scaled single cube in DAZ with the black writing and CIA seal as a texture. The gold stars and text are added as a metal and mixed via a trans map.

With this version I replaced the bump with a normal map and applied IES profiles to the ceiling lights.

The wall doesn't exist in real life, although there is a book of Remembrance at Langley which has the same inscription and stars design. Images are available online.

The number and positioning of the stars is not accurate. There are quite a few less in the real version IIRC.

Yeah.. I sort of feel his pain.  Been wracking my brain trying to figure out how to flatten the top and bottom of a sphere in Hexagon.  And doing it by the trial and error method instead of being smart and looking for a tute somewhere.  Has me all bumfuzzled too.

Nice piece of modeling Dwayne, if you need any help with Hex drop me a line.

A while back someone suggested I make some Reality/Lux ready candles, here is what I've done so far. I'm going to move on and do some candlesticks, then try my hand at some used candles (which will be a challenge).

Hi Gang:

I just bought this set while it is on sale:

http://www.daz3d.com/shop/the-all-new-worldbase-xt-lushlands

It consists of a huge skydome-type thing, and a ground plane populated with a bunch of grasses and plants and such.

Trying a quick test render with it, I eliminated the lights it loaded and added a couple of Reality mesh lights.  The figure I lit is rendering fine, and the nearby ground, but the background fades quickly to black.  How can I get the beautiful mountains and skies lit that the set is supposed to provide?

Is this set not Reality-compatible?

Doctorjellybean ( ) posted Fri, 14 September 2012 at 10:45 AM

For backgrounds to be visible, you should use IBL lights or a sun.

You can turn the material for the Skydome into a light. Right click on it and select the option "Convert to a light". If the the surface normals of the skydome point to the outside then the light will be emitted away from the camera and not toward the camera. This can be easily fixed by enabling the "Invert direction" checkbox in the Light editor.

Hope this helps.

You can if you make the skydome matte translucent ;) This is an oldie from december 2010 with just that: A skydome (matte translucent) and a Sun.

Skydome and Sun

Yes, you are right awf cuz, but I like to keep my options open.. :) Besides.. in december 2010 we could not not turn things into a light AND keep the texture on it, I think :)

John.. got your messages a few minutes ago.  Not really having any more problems per se.  Was just being too impatient.  I'm more of a "throw away the manual and dive in" kind of software user and old-school beta tester.  I knew about gary miller's tutes a while ago but things are usually too hectic in my house to pay much attention to stuff like that.  Had a rare few hours this morning of total silence and started watching the tutes.  I'm going over the 3-part tute on modeling, uv mapping and texturing a tree stump now.

On another note.. been turning skydomes into lights for a week weeks now.  At least with my dinosaur computer.. it's the closest I can come to fast rendering.  Otherwise I'm calculating passes per hour instead of minute.

That all depend on the map used for the IBL. If you have an HDRI with the light source included it should produce a shadow. Anyway, you can add a mesh light and scale it to create the level of harshness/softness thsat you want. Just position the light in sync with the light source in the IBL map and it will work well.

Cheers.
