True but it is very slow in rendering. Turning the skydome to a light is simpler and faster.
Cheers.
An IBL doesn't give me shadows like a sun does, but a sun is very harsh. So, any suggestions?
Use both. I find I get good results with an IBL at about 50-60% to add ambience and just a bit of sun, no sky to enhance the shadows.
Regards, Michael
Quote - > Quote - > Quote - For backgrounds to be visible, you should use IBL lights or a sun.
Doc, you cannot use the sun with a skydome, the sun will be always outside the dome.
Cheers.
You can if you make the skydome matte translucent ;) This is an oldie from december 2010 with just that: A skydome (matte translucent) and a Sun.
That is a great image, love the POV and the lighting is perfect. What skydome did you use, would be interested in duplicating this scene (without the figure) as I have lots of ideas for something like this.

Thanks! :) I think it is the VC-Skydome (From Village Courtyard), yes, I am pretty sure it is :)
Thanks callad, off to check it out.
OT anyone here taken advantage of the PA sale at DAZ? Curious to know what goodies anyones purchased. Got a few new items today that I am interested in from Flipmode.

I have not taken much advantage of it this year. I picked up Marja Hair, which I think I will return and The FM Tank Top. I'm still looking at the World Base XT but would like to see soom renders first. hint hint
I picked up a few ancients from my wishlist Mike, early on anyway. Mostly Stonemason and some props I couldn't do without. Strangely after revisiting my wishlist, I found a lot of things I could either piece together myself or have something very similar that I could live without, like certain clothing items or hair. Crazy what you can accumulate after a few years...

I looked at that a moment ago Mr. Horsey, but the flatness of the trees and grass didn't really turn me on. I've been debating the export plug-in for Vue which one could create massive OBJ worlds for Studio use. If it wasn't 150 bucks...

Someone said it is very nice, but very flat. It probably needs normal maps to add some depth. But maybe Ansel.Artful will post some renders :)

That's what I figured. I had the first world Base before getting into Reality and it had the same problem. Thanks for the HU.
We should all chip in $10 and buy you the exporter then you spend all your time making scenery for us. LOL

I don't think NM's would help there is no dimension to the objects, they are flat billboards...
It's ok for distance but nothing remotely close to the camera.
John.. got the uv mapping issue solved. it was 2-fold. After I selected my planar projection, then on the y-axis and then validate. Then up on the uv and texturing tab, I clicked the unwrap icon. That splits your screen and gives you perspective view on one side and uv view on the other. At that point, on the uv side, you're supposed to click the unwrap icon at the top of that 1/2 of yours split screen and then validate that. Then that will allow you to manipulate your points and edges. I left out that bold-faced step and that hosed the whole deal. Second, the end-cut texture I picked for my stump just plain sucked so I'm off to hunt for a better one. Thanks for the concern though. I usually don't stay stumped like this for long.

Yah, kidding, kidding. Vue does make mighty fine ecosystems though. Stupid overpriced modules!

Boom.. I was on your site a while ago checking out your ebooks.. Don't have the funds now.. but had planned on grabbing one or two when student loans come in on 10/5. You'll be 1/8th of the way there. I'm more of a fantasy/sci-fi kinda guy; but, my boy would probably really get into 'em. He basically likes anything where lots of shit dies and/or gets blown up.

I'd be happy to provide some renders, but so far my limited testing has not identified a way to make the environment show up in the Lux render. I tried making the skydome into a light, and I tried reversing the normals, but all I get is blackness other than the ground near my subject lit by a couple of Reality mesh lights.

I have one running with one of DL's domes, I had to crank up the power to 213. I'm not sure how large your dome is, How high did you bump up the power? You can also boost the wattage in Reality from 100 to 1000 or 2000 and give that a try.
Just some thoughts....

Actually, Vue 10 is on sale right now for 1/3 off. I couldn't resist so I just bought 10 Complete for $400. Reality is now rendering dragon flight cycles with my facegenned doppleganger riding on his back. :) I'm going to composite it together with some Vue rendered terrain & skies and a little bit of live footage of me recorded in front of a green screen. I'm having a fun weekend now. hah

They all have a lot of sci-fi elements as that is my favorite area to explore (everything is plausable!), but you'll both have some enjoyable reading, as lots of baddies and such get blown up and/or dispatched in creative sci-fi fashion. In a nutshell, the whole series has elements that anyone into Indiana Jones, Fringe, MacGyver and cinematic action sequences would enjoy. If you're interested, the first one is still free, and I'll be putting it up on the website for direct download momentarily.
Sorry for the threadjack everybody, but I do have a new mouth to feed, har har =D

This image I did the other day is using the World Base XT Snowland pack. I removed the sky that came preloaded and used a Skies of Reality IBL instead. I like the trees but the ground textures need some work. I didn't do anything to them in this image but I'm working on another image that angles towards the ground more and it looks pretty bad, so I need to spend some time this weekend figuring out how to make it look better.

Damn, that is a helluva deal for Vue complete. I was thinking up ways to guilt the wife for Blacksmith 3D that also on 50% off. Crap!!
Looks like we need to whore you out for background OBJ's instead!
Add: That was a nice shot, Brad! Maybe the promo pics on the Daz site are deceptive as h3ll, as those trees looked like something you would have seen in a 90's era pc game (the planed texture tree that is)

:) I'm still a bachelor so I have one less step there. hah
Eventually, I'll try to make some HDR backgrounds and export objects. I could definitely put some stuff up for you guys to use too.
Here's a sample of what I'm doing. I render my facegenned self and the dragon in Reality/Lux and the terrain in Vue. And then I'll composite everything in HitFilm, where I can mess with color correction/blur/visual fx (dragon fire!) etc.
Got frustrated trying to add my family crest to a stein last night(in Hexagon); so, decided to whip up something simple yet sorta pretty. Just a nice champagne flute. Was going to make it out of 3 pieces(1 sphere and 2 cylinders); but the cylinder for the stem went so well that i just extended it up into the vessel of the glass itself. Added a rose colored glass shader in studio and then rendered out to 1500 passes with hyper real glass settings. Single mesh light positioned at 45 degrees up to the glass' 4:00.
And think I might have discovered my stein dilemna in a dream last night. I had removed the background on the crest and was adding it as a material to the stein as a transparent image. Shouldn't have done that. Should have just added the shot with the crest appropriately sized and positioned and then transmapped it. Going to try that now and see what happens. Debating whether to put Hex up and break out the stack of 3ds tutes I have and seeing what I can do in it. Have only been using Hex for 2 days so not much of a loss.
I found that even with the Reality settings above, I still had to adjust the Sky light upward in Lux. I dropped the Main and Fill slightly also. Love those separate light groups! It has been baking for over 9 hours now, reaching 350 S/p.

John.. yeah.. I hear ya on the addictive part. It better be seeing as how I should have both my architecture and cad degrees in a couple years. My wife's an interior design major; so, we might combine hobbies and vocations and come up with some nice interior design type props and stuff. I'm at absolute ground zero with modeling; but, I've had some nice success with the wine glass, stein and champagne flute I've modeled. Note the growing theme here?? I THINK I might need to go have a beer or twelve soon. Due to kids and finances and time I've been inside a bar I think twice since mid '07.
I really admire those of you who undertake modelling. I have tried my hand at it a few times, each of which ended up a spectacular failure and an excercise in frustration.
Now it seems everytime I start up Hexagon, or Blender, or Wings3D, or whatever modelling package, I just end up staring at the screen for a long while wondering where to begin LOL
So, if you have the knack (and the will to learn) more power to you! You deserve a pat on the back just for TRYING, let alone trying again.
Go forth and create great things!
Quote - OK, thanks to KrazyHorse's suggestions, I tried some radical "cranking up" of the power settings for the skydome in the Worlbase XT set, and was able to produce the render above. I turned the Sky dome to a light and set both Gain and Power in Reality to the maximums, 10,000 each. I also have a typical two-light Main/Fill mesh lights set to light the figure. The Main was set to 5,000 Watts and the Fill to 2,000 Watts.

That looks pretty darn good to me, I may have to pick up that set. Hope it is still on sale! (edit: bah, went of sale long ago, maybe they'll do a catch-up day )
Nice render Ansel!
medmon... i was sitting here thinking one day. dangerous i know. but i was transmapping and texturing hongyu's bikini. spent a lot of time pondering the mesh of it and figuring out how it was made. then i went to another 3d site that sells really hi-res and realistic cars. those cars, take the 2012 vette i was drooling over, were selling for like a hundred bucks a pop. seeing the mesh of one of their freebies, i can see why. the had to be pretty damned difficult to make and took some skill and artistry. and they didn't even come with textures other than the dashboards and lights and maybe the wheels if they were feeling up to it. rest of the stuff you had to texture yourself. then i go back to hongyu's bikini. now... granted.. it took some skill to make and to make look nice; but, i figured if it's selling for less than 10 bucks on rendo.. then compared to that vette.. it must be pretty easy to make. fast forward to the beginning of my attempts at modeling.. my mindset was.. with the help of a few tutes to get me off and running.. this clothing creation deal shouldn't be beyond my abilities and then i can stop altering other ppl's stuff and start making things exactly the way i want them to look.

And... that is how stars are born keep at it and you'll be a master before you know it, I bet!

Thanks for posting this again. The World Base has potential as a background but what jumps out in this scene for me is the three groups of identical trees.

All you had to do is turn on the light switch... LOL Looks nice.
Quote - Here is one I did for Abi, I'm sure she will see the significance of it.
I did this using a dome converted to a light, 3 mesh lights for fill and an IBL light. I set the IBL to .03, it served to blur the dome background and add the beams of light appearing to come thru the trees.
Innocent and pregnant? Did you forget to explain to her about the birds and the bees ;)
Clever use of the lighting, and nice render!

Damned cctv again! although last time I checked i wasn't up the spout, must just be a particulary unflattering shot of me. lol, there's also a bit too much material on that shirt for my tastes, gotta let the skin breathe!
I have an 8y/o daughter so I know a little about the birds and bees, enough that I know not to let them near me again! hehe
Hands on eh?
