The shop front. Tomorrow we'll see its possibilities.

Awesome! That looks great Darth 👍

Oooh lala! This will make a nice addition to my hoard.

DarthJ ( ) posted Sat, 25 August 2012 at 11:09 AM

Tomorrow is *always* the day after today.

I've changed a few things meanwhile.

Though not meant as such the shop can be used as a full building. For this reason there is a first floor.

The shop is divided into 3 compartments, allowing you to keep it small (3.50 m deep), medium (7.00 m deep) or large (10.50 m deep). Just make the unnecessary parts invisible. Or, as there are so many different material zones, first make everything invisble, then only colour the parts you need.

Every wall, floor, ceiling and roof has been prepared for seamless tiled textures. They all measure 3.50 m x 3.50 m (the program uses real-life measurements), which is also the exact size of the outer side wall segments (such as the bikini-clad one).

monkeycloud ( ) posted Sat, 25 August 2012 at 11:14 AM

Looking superb Darth! Sounds like it'll be a breeze to play around with textures on too... and all sorts of rendering possibilities there.

DarthJ ( ) posted Sat, 25 August 2012 at 11:18 AM

Invisibility demonstrated here ... and U-turning front part.

Note that all textures load upside-down, the conversion to 3DS is to blame for that.

And then there is another loose part, the window display. The 3 pannels and floor have exact matching textures, the rest is tiled.

Notice the brown access hatch.

Daleks Invasion Earth, anyone?   The scene on the street with Bernard Cribbens?

Thanks, Darth.  Nice work.

The release of the shop front has been postponed because of another "job" : my office is being refurbished -the thorough way- and I am making a 3D model of the proposed new layout. As I suspected from the 2D plan : it doesn't look good.  Under non-disclosure for the moment but when all is revealed I'll show you some of the flaws.

The delay won't be long though.

monkeycloud ( ) posted Sun, 02 September 2012 at 5:00 PM

Cool - thanks Darth 👍

Looking forward to the shop, when you're able to do some more. Much appreciated

I'm being kept busy at present with trying to render a ridiculous quantity of Sam's Dalek figures in one scene...

Above render shows a lesser fine example of interior design included in the Masterplan for our New Office.

The new entrance door - once a window with a central heating unit in front of it -  opens straight onto one of the counters. That counter will be continuously submitted to a chilling draft, outside on the loading bay the average temperature during winter is about 5°C - 10°C.

Also an incoming customer will notice that counter first and head straight for it, while he/she should go to the waiting space until being called.

Not to mention the uncareful customer whom just barges in and bumps straight into the customer that happens to be standing at that counter.

See my "Logistics Centre" download for an overview

Does anybody in the construction business know how long it takes to refurbish an office ? Including moving out the furniture (among which 2 pieces weighing about 400 kg each ) and computers, demolishing board walls, breaking out brick walls for 2 doors, removing a heavy airco unit, then constructing new doors and board walls, laying electric wiring for our computers. Installing those computers (hard and software). I'm not even undisclosing safety measurements. How long ? Because here as this refurbishment cannot interrupt our daily operations from monday to friday they should be able to do all that in just 2 days, during the weekend.

Just a few weeks ago simply installing Windows 7 software already took several days.

But we can work it out !

Or not.

DarthJ ( ) posted Sat, 08 September 2012 at 11:05 AM

file_486236.jpg

As we always stay on topic in this thread : this whole refurbishment -business may result in a few freebies, as I have to create some custom-build furniture. I guess you always wanted a postal sorting table in your runtime.

The desk above is another example. Wood texture from a "live" specimen.

monkeycloud ( ) posted Sat, 08 September 2012 at 11:27 AM

Cool 😉

Yup - 2 days sounds optimistic eh? Suppose if they throw enough guys at it and manage them really well...

DarthJ ( ) posted Sat, 08 September 2012 at 11:59 AM

Enough guys ? A whole army-sized underpaid Polish workforce you mean.

The wiring (electricity, phones, computers, counter-ATM's, etc ...)  is an electrician"s nightmare : installed by different companies, nobody knows the full picture. Repairing something usually already takes days before they find the right wire(s) and/or cable(s).

The worst part : in maximum 4 years we move out to new premises. But they have to install new open counters because it's part of our "modernised" image.

monkeycloud ( ) posted Sat, 08 September 2012 at 1:31 PM

The phrase "logistical nightmare" springs to mind! Good luck!

I've just had a room refurbishment at my work take 6 months! There were various comications... I mean complications, stupid type ahead... He he... but I'd rather not think about all that right now

monkeycloud ( ) posted Sat, 08 September 2012 at 1:32 PM

Looks like we'll all get some good models out of it though 😉

DarthJ ( ) posted Sat, 08 September 2012 at 7:46 PM

file_486252.jpg

A close-up of a holed sorting table, forged in solid steel a long time ago. Colour sample in traditional "Administration Grey" taken from a live specimen.

As the name implicates the most common use is for sorting mail in a post office.  All mail collected during the day (postboxes, customers,...) is tossed out on this table, followed by a basic sorting and control of postage. Ah, taxing mail with insufficient postage, that was the funny part of the job. But we don't do that anymore.

"And though the holes were rather small, they had to count them all. Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall."

Here in Europe you can tell summer is ending : the weather is getting *better*.

And for this fading summer I have a last summer themed freebie !

It's located at the Belgian coast and its name commemorates a battle ...

Guess ! Guess !

Battle of the Bulge

DarthJ ( ) posted Mon, 17 September 2012 at 8:01 PM

The battle of the Bulge was fought :

a) in the Ardennes, on the other side of the country.

b) during winter.

Despite the many battles being fought on Belgian soil, some (in)famous and some forgotten, this battle wasn't. And besides the name this little building (visible in my render if you can take your eyes of the quadruplets) has nothing to do with that battle.

So it wasn't "Waterloo" either.

Guess ! Guess !

Aargh... I feel like I should know the answer. But not a scooby doo either... been racking my brains every now and then the last couple of days.

Never been to Belgium and I'm pretty poor on geography... and history... truth be told, unless I have a starting point of reference and research material (e.g. Google) on my side. He he.

So why I think I should know the answer... I don't know. I'm bloody awful on both those subjects in any sort of pub quiz, etc

Oh well... I will await someone else guessing... or Darth revealing the answer... and then either kick myself or take comfort from the answer being obscure 😄

Meantime, having fun playing with that shopfront just now, whilst waiting for my september Poser forum comp entry to hopefully finish rendering...

😉

Passchendaele?

DarthJ ( ) posted Thu, 20 September 2012 at 4:58 PM

A hint : the British lost this battle and neither French, Germans, Americans, Natives or other British were the opponents.

Please guess before winter, the Quadruplettes are getting chilly out there.

DarthJ ( ) posted Thu, 20 September 2012 at 5:02 PM · edited Thu, 20 September 2012 at 5:06 PM

Passchendaele ?  Could have been, not so far from the coast, but no.

We only got about 60 km of coastline, and even less km's of dunes ... oh that's a hint.

monkeycloud ( ) posted Thu, 20 September 2012 at 5:21 PM

Fort Napoleon, Oostende?

Just a wild, Google inspired guess there 😉

monkeycloud ( ) posted Thu, 20 September 2012 at 5:24 PM

Ah, no... is it a lookout point pavilion, called "Spioenkop"?

DarthJ ( ) posted Thu, 20 September 2012 at 5:51 PM

Yes, you got it.

Most people would think that the name "Spion-kop" or "Spy-head" refers to the former function of the high dune on which the pavillon is standing as an outlook-post for several armies and customs services.

The actual building is the third version dating from 1955 and built in solid concrete. The 2 previous ones (in wood) were destroyed by German troops in WWI and WWII. This part of the Belgian coast is still popular with German tourists though they don't cause as much destruction nowadays.

Is it already 39 years ago that I spend my holidays there ? Gawwwd ....

monkeycloud ( ) posted Thu, 20 September 2012 at 6:06 PM · edited Thu, 20 September 2012 at 6:06 PM

Yay! Ha ha... well I've learnt some new history and geography, so thanks...

...will look forward to the model of it! 👍

39 years... he he... well, that is in fact my age, to the nearest day, as of six odd minutes ago... and I can't believe that, quite frankly 😉

This comic cover contains an idea for a possible future freebie, still coastal-themed.

Is your Google-fu strong today ?

monkeycloud ( ) posted Sun, 23 September 2012 at 5:03 PM

I'm guessing... using my Google-fu... that the church shown in the background of that comic cover is "The Church of Our Lady" in Damme, West Flanders?

Is that it?

DarthJ ( ) posted Sun, 23 September 2012 at 6:20 PM

Google-Fu strong today.

Now disciple guess why I call church "coastal themed" and not village (once a harbour).

DarthJ ( ) posted Mon, 24 September 2012 at 5:59 PM

Sharecg sent me an Open Letter today : despite the annoying flashing banners and adverts they are still losing money. So their new Master-Businessplan under consideration is to let members pay, 9.90$/year.

So I would have to pay to provide you with freebies which would be one step too far. Moving my freebies to Renderosity would be the only solution though this means far less freedom.

DarthJ ( ) posted Mon, 24 September 2012 at 6:10 PM

Google-Fu low today  ?

Ok then,

The church of Damme is a "flat-top". In Belgium this type of church is almost unique to the coastal region. On these flat tops fires were lit to guide the fishing boats and as such they were the first lighthouses.

monkeycloud ( ) posted Tue, 25 September 2012 at 4:09 PM

Ah, I see... oh well, I'd got nowhere near that answer... my Google-fu was indeed on a low eb...

That is a fascinating fact indeed! That church will definitely be a cool model to do 👍

DarthJ ( ) posted Tue, 25 September 2012 at 4:55 PM

ONLY the tower (sometimes I like to make things easier for myself) IF I can find out how to do it and IF Poser can take it. Because of Poser memory limitations I already had to scrap an odd building that spans both a large bunker and a street. Yes, it really exists.

monkeycloud ( ) posted Tue, 25 September 2012 at 5:03 PM

He he... ah, that's fair enough... the tower by itself would make for a very nice Poser building I reckon 😉

DarthJ ( ) posted Sat, 29 September 2012 at 12:30 PM

The tower is still a far, far away concept.

Meanwhile Spioenkop remains to be released ...

... and then a muze came flying in ...

BZZZZZZZZZZZ

...  and of course ...

SPLATTTT !

... nevertheless resulting in the INFODESK above ...

Either it's uploaded within the next 5 days - which is somewhat short considering that I want to include a few poses for Miki 2 or 4  - or you'll have to wait a while longer. Clues about "why" and "where" in render above.
