Ah, the Commodore 64. Our first family pc, if you can call it that. Brings back memories of Time Trucker and spending a few days at the keyboard typing in code from a magazine.

Then, when it was finally time to [RUN], the damn thing would lock up solid like a vault.

Rfriese.. okay.. .we seem to be getting about the same speed.. here's a screenie of what I have rendering now.  Simple model, bikini, hair, background in a cube render.  The s/s speed is nothing to scream about.. but the near 3million c/s is pretty darn nice.  This is an fx8150, 8gig ram, radeon hd7750.

superboomturbo ( ) posted Thu, 11 October 2012 at 7:24 AM

Sharky, you still up too?

Yhat efficency is damn near ridiculous! And the sample speed is very respectable with the eff tied in!

Maybe I need to revisit hybrid mode, and quick!

Got to playing around with GenX due to another member having issues with Elena and decided to recreate the Hulk chasing Black Widow scene in Avengers.

SBT...no.. i have a first grader and kindergartner that have to be to school at 8:30 eastern.  so, i just have had little sleep instead of no sleep.  If I take the cube out of the scene.. the s/s go up to nearly 300k but the efficiency goes down to around 400% or so.  From what I can tell from the benchmarks(and JtheNinja can jump in any time); the true test of the speed you're getting from Lux is c/s not s/s because that is what all the benchmark speeds list.  Your c/s is your s/s multiplied by your efficiency.  So I would assume you want to hit the sweet spot of high s/s and high efficiency.  I've had some 4000% efficient renders look pretty sweet after a couple hundred passes; yet, have had some low efficiency-high s/s renders take a couple thousand to clear up.

Maybe someone can explain in simple English what all those stats on Lux's statusbar means, and what the best is :) Some of them seems to be aimed at geeks/nerds, and I'm no Lux geek/nerd

480k c/s puts it right about where I would think it should be seeing as how most of the better performing boxes with similar builds are all running linux

Sharkbytes-BamaScans ( ) posted Thu, 11 October 2012 at 8:46 AM

last night.. after the build was officially over.. made the mistake of dumping my old huge runtime into my new lean, clean fully-organized runtime... and omg.. i opened studio and my unassigned directory looks like a bomb went off.. i've got literally DAYS of work ahead of me on this one

Im building a box next summer due to the fact that with luxrendering a notebook is prolly not the best due to the physics and limited cooling options. I will still use it to build scenes and export them. Needless to say more ram and better processor should help I too should try to revisit hybrid rendering I keep forgetting to... Did you guys read about the bug 1.1 and saving the lxm file on the DS forum?

Reggie68 ( ) posted Thu, 11 October 2012 at 11:58 AM

I'm thinkiing of building either an i7 3770K box or one based on the AMD FX-3850, maybe just into the new year.

Depends on how the 3850 performs and what type graphics I will need as it will be a linux box anyway and I don't use hybrid as it isn't in a useable spec yet.

Also depends if I get the 2 x 23" HDMI monitors I want to replace the current 17" & 19" units.

bobvan ( ) posted Thu, 11 October 2012 at 12:00 PM

I am using a 27" samsung at home

Reggie68 ( ) posted Thu, 11 October 2012 at 12:14 PM

I've got a 23" HDMI TV as a main display that usually has the scene and parameters tab on it

The 19" 16:10 then has the content library, align and surfaces tabs and the 17" 4:3 has the scene tab, D-Form and render settings.

The colour on the two (cheap) VGA monitors is way out, so I was going to buy two 23" LG monitors, a dual monitor VESA mount stand and run all 2 through DVI from my ATI 6870 and use HDMI for the other.

That won't work, I just tried it. Use Word Pad, it works.

Windows has the unnecessary habit to use two characters for line termination: CR+LF ( carriage return and line feed). That has been always an issue with DOS and Windows. I export my Lux files using the standard Unix convention of placing just an LF. Lux is smart enough to recognize either convention. Some Windows editors are not smart enough to sense that and they present the text without line termination. Better use a better editor. Sublime Text 2 is available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux and it's the editor that I use to write Realty. All of a sudden I start sounding like an endorser ;)

Cheers.

I'll take that action! To all in the market for new moni's, I'll highly endorse my 22" Viewsonic. I've used it daily for 7 years and it's still beautiful.

Edit: The one caveat was that I got the model right before they started making them 3D-ready. ;-(

Edit 2: Sharky, finally got around to doing the Luxmark trial. Still only getting 8 cores off the GPU's, but with the CPU in hybrid, 3317. Woo hoo! (I think)

Not being a current Poser utilizer (but ya never know what the future holds!) I snapped it up too. For those who have installed it, does the Genesis 'starter essentials'  contain anything additional? Or is just the Geneis base figure that comes with Studio 4.x?

Maybe so and maybe not.   The PC sale has about half the members voting over 2 years ago.   I have been going over the PC member list and close to 50% of the members have not logged in since the store change over and less than 50% have logged in, in October.  This is just a estimate as I only scanned approximately 10% of the list. It appears on the surface that the change over has hurt them. Just my opinion, I could be way off.  lol

Let's not get too far :). We can say though, that good architectural decisions bring good consequences. One of the very first things that I talked about with Smith Micro was the need to have a system to automatically load plug-ins in Poser at startup. That was essential to make everything happen. The way it was before, you had to run some script manually in order to get things started. I remember the old Wardrobe Wizard being one. That was just a limitation of how Poser implemented the Python interface. With the right startup system now a plugin can integrate with Poser. In addition, you can use all the "hooks" to the events in the scene. That was also my request. Basically DAZ has created a series of CR2s for the .DUF genesis files. Thanks to the Framework they can now intercept when a new object is added to the scene. If the object added is one of those CR2s then they open the corresponding DUF file and import it in Poser.

Cheers.

Well I haven't posted anything in awhile, been busy with lots of non CGI related stuff. But the other day I realized that I always use V4 legacy morphs with genesis and wanted to see if I could create a full genesis only character I could use in my renders. Here is my final first attempt. Still using the V4 UV map layout as I have yet to find a V5 skin I like. Texture is Odonata from Silver and Adiene

superboomturbo ( ) posted Fri, 12 October 2012 at 1:27 AM

The caveat I've found with water bodies is that to get the 'Ooo Wow' effect, you have to use the Reality water plane. I've tried more than a few water props that come with various products, and none convert to quite the same brilliance. I came close with Rubicon's Ocean 1 (now updated to version 2) but it didn't have the ripples and refraction qualties like the Reality plane.

If you find yourself in a pickle with such a prop, like a pool or fountain, use the base prop as a guide for the Reality water mesh and chuck the original after that.

Just my two pennies. Paolo's the man to suggest a better solution. ;-)
