Subject: What about V3?

Does anyone still make V3 products? Or even use V3?

The reason I'm asking, is because I was thinking of making some stuff.

I use her more than V4.  As if that meant anything.  But I also clothe her in things that wouldn't get her arrested going down the street or sent home from the office.

Think there's a Genesis V3 Morph.
Think all the older cloths made for the original V3,V4 Close work on Genesis ,also.

We still do them at Poser World, more so for Stephanie 3 but we do them as requested and they are requested more than you'd think. Personally i think S3 and V3 are better looking models than the 4th generation .......Steve

well, to me V3 looks more than a woman as V4 and M3 looks more a man than M4 and my favorite characters are still gen3 😄

toastie ( ) posted Fri, 26 October 2012 at 6:11 AM

M3 is still my favourite and most used male figure. A3 and H3 I use all the time. But V3 I've never liked much, even when she was the main Vicky figure I didn't really like her. I do use the AS characters Keilo and Yaara with her quite a lot still, but standard V3 clothing doesn't fit them anyway. So.... no, I don't use V3. But if you were thinking of making anything for most of the other Gen3 figures I might be interested.

I still use the Gen 3 figures.  For me, the major issue is the textures, there aren't that many that hold up with all of the advances in Poser that have come since Poser 5.

NanetteTredoux ( ) posted Fri, 26 October 2012 at 11:20 AM

I still use generation 3 as well. I bought every v3 texture that Illusions Designs have, and they come in really handy. I also use them on Antonia.

I still use V3, but can't think of ANYTHING I need to buy for her. I think this is the issue with all of the past figures... it's pretty much all been done for them. I seldom buy anything for V4 anymore, not because I don't use her, but because there is nothing being released that I NEED or really want.

I would buy non-slutwear professional clothing for both figures, were it offered, but this fish has been fried black. I am aware it doesn't sell well. That is why 9mBi got so much of my V4 money. They made a LOT of what I REALLY wanted.

If you are wanting to model some stuff to make money, try creating for Anastasia or MyMichelle. They are where my current expenditures are being made, and sorely need clothing! (Not to mention Tyler!)

I still use V3 a lot. She does have a ton of clothes. There's a lot of V3 clothes that used to be in the Marketplace that have been removed that I still would have bought eventually.

I'd buy a good Victorian dress or sci fi clothes for V3.

I like V3, but some of the expression morphs make her look goofy; V4 is better in that regard...

Aye, 3rd gen figures still figure in my work - I have some great products for them and they do have their own look and that adds variety in my runtime. Like others, I'm not sure what I would buy for them now and that is also a point that I have reached with the 4th gen figures.

If I had a 3rd gen wish list, it would be weight mapping / joint corrections, and a new set of expression morphs - as WandW mentions, these are the biggest weekness in these figures. Expression can make or break an image for me and I remember how much I loved Miki and Koji just for what they could do that way (Mankahoo's figures are also great in this regard). I remember that there were a couple of extra replacement heads for V3 (I have them both) that  have some great expression morphs that were worth the purchase alone.

booksbydavid ( ) posted Sun, 28 October 2012 at 12:02 PM

I still use V3. As a matter of fact, I'm working on a V3 image series right now. Weight mapping/joint correction would be awesome for this figure. I still use M3 and V3 as well as A3 quite often.

V3 and M3 here as well. Loads of stuff, especially Poserworlds and much lighter on older system.

not sure where the 'lighter resources' thing is coming from, unless its due to slightly better library/workspace responsiveness due to a CR2 with far fewer morphs in it, or one less skin texture.

V3 is 75k polys - actually much higher poly than V4 (55k).

its likely due to the fact that nothing out of the box from that era had advanced shaders or lighting - just a tex map plugged into the diffuse and perhaps a bump map.

you can load modern shaders onto the gen-3 figures but then rendertimes actually match those of Gen4.

The old M3 and A3 skins I've tried with EZskin have come out looking pretty good. Must dig out some V3 skins and see how they look. It's time Yaara for V3 had another outing.

Blackhearted ( ) posted Sun, 28 October 2012 at 7:38 PM

its not updated :(

as much as i like revamping old stuff, i can say a GND2/Irina2 update is quite unlikely.  you guys can always use EZskin on the old characters.

sigh, i miss the Gen3 characters' mapping.  V4's mapping is horrendous, yet somehow its become 'the norm' :(

I keep forgetting Irina2! She's hidden away in my Runtime in "SP3 stuff" and since she's about the only thing in there she's mostly unnoticed poor lass. Must add her to my "stuff to render" list!

DAZ' 3rd Gen meshes have great mesh topology and very accessible mapping. I built all my custom characters out of them.

But the rigging was mediocre at best and it took me countless hours to make them bend like actual human beings. And while their expression morphs are actually better than most people think once you learn to combine them the "right" way, I had to do a lot of custom morphs to achieve the expressions I wanted.

But time doesn't stand still and Genesis made all those meshes completely obsolete with its legacy shapes. (See pic)

Like it made any any other existing Poser or DAZ figure obsolete.

Genesis not only can easily turn into V3 or SP3 with a flick of a dial, it also gives you the best currently available rigging and some of the best expression morphs that are out there.

Not to mention direct access to all 4th and 5th gen textures and all of the 3rd, 4th and 5th gen clothing there is.

Yes, it's still fun to play with older figures. Heck, maybe some day I'll even fully weightmap the Dork just for kicks.

But unless you strictly do it "for the fun", supporting any other figure than Genesis has simply just become a waste of time.

Once I'll have transferred all the old morphs and shapes I own to the Genesis "genepool", I'll delete or at least move to an external storage drive any other figure I have.

I wasted years fixing poorly rigged and sculpted figures and I have enough of it.

If you support Genesis, you will eventually support everyone. If you support anything else, you'll limit yourself to just a few diehards. I know how much work it is to model, rig and texture clothing, and I wouldn't want to spend that time and energy on a figure if there are better options avalable.

Your figures, your time.

But after 12 years of custom figure rigging and morphing, that is the only advice I can give.

I've been playing catch up with A3... Been getting alot of things from Japanese sites and Daz for her, just purchased Yamato's XinXin!

I can't really explain it but the Gen 3 Aiko seems somehow more like the real Aiko than V4's morph does. All in all I'm finding more toon like characters to be of greater interest, not really into the whole striving for photorealism thing in 2d art of any type (well, perhaps more interested in a stylized hybrid). So yeah, Aiko3... I would definitely consider purchasing anything made for her.

Genesis seems to be pretty well stocked in the toon morph department but I'm a poser 8 user so the Gen 5 characters are not accessible to me yet.

And the other great thing about A3 is she always seems to be one of the easiest figures to convert clothing to and from with XD. Her wardrobe in my Runtime is full of converted V3, M3, H3, V4, toon and just about everything else clothing. And she can use the other gen3 skins. Best figure ever! :)

Closely followed by M3 of course! ;)

Totally OT or perhaps not, I've noticed that many seem to expouse the superiority or advantages of the latest and greatest and in a few years will be like "oh yes, well that's obviously crap compared to the (latest flavor)" in regard to same. I've seen it so many times while perusing older threads that it's almost comical. It must be medium induced tunnel vision, or symptomatic of the practicality problems of this medium in general.

Can you use old Gen3 clothing on the Genesis figures who are morphed into 'legacy' shapes... like Vicki3's body shape? Is there some rigging swap that allows old clothing to work with Gen5 folks?

That would be a huge plus if DAZ4 has that capability. I'd actually try DAZ4 out if that's the case.

I am not comparing gene to anything.  I do not use gene, for several obvious reasons.  The first, I have already stated, and I repeat myself, why should I spend hours with an unfamiliar and unstable software in the attempt to achieve what I can call from the library with a double click of the mouse?

I like V3 for some things too, and I don't have to jump through the hoops of gene conversion to make her work acceptably well, again, no advantage.  At least not until dson reaches a better stage of stability and reliability.  Some are having no problems, others are only crashing, then finding the program doesn't remove cleanly, causing other problems.  Until those are resolved, it tells me dson is not worth bothering with.  Let's have the V3 stuff.

Yeah, V3 might be more poly-heavy but I find that V4 bends and poses MUCH more slowly, likely due to all the embedded deformers and dial rigging.  In that respect, I also find V3/S3 to be more to my liking.

I've noticed the exact opposite: a vocal group of people who are very quick to point out all of the disadvantages of "the newest thing" whilst jumping at the chance to identify themselves as diehard advocates of older tech. This thread is an excellent example. (I'm guilty myself whenever engaging in discussions about mobile devices or social media, the appeal of of which I find hard to understand.)

Nothing wrong with it really. It's human nature to seek out a group of likeminded folk to hang out with, even if the reasons for agreement are based on more or less random factors. Not much different from picking a sports team to support and wearing its colors in public, really.

I guess I'm in the Diehard Advocate category, moriador.

Or maybe it's because in reality I'm relatively new to Poser, or more precisely was away for a long time, so all of the old stuff is still very interesting to me. Add the fact that I'm attracted to anything outside the margins.

But yeah, I still stand by my statement about the "newest thing". And it's not just sour-grapes syndrome on my part.

Anyone know of a good nun get-up for A3?

RorrKonn ( ) posted Tue, 30 October 2012 at 3:44 PM

If you just loaded V3,4,5 .obj's meshs with out morphs or textures they would load fast.

Since the 20th century all the main app's like C4D ,Max ,LW etc etc.
used Subdivided meshes.
I've been asking for low polycount Subdivided meshes like Genesis in Poser since Poser 4.

V3,V4 where High polycount meshes cause Poser did not have SubD.
V3,V4 done what they where meant to do in Poser.
And a lot of people liked them used them.
DAZ built a empire with them.

I always had a very hard time dealing with there high polycount.
