the problem is created when light passes through the window (not the glass) and then create the shadow.

This is the external view.

1

Irradiance catching 39?

Try 64, 70, 80 or 90 - 97

2

For wall, in materials, check "normals forward".

3

Instal SR3.1, uncheck irradiace catching, set sample to 256

Aww, no sorry.

xpdev ( ) posted Thu, 15 November 2012 at 9:10 AM

something happens with the only light outside, I have to keep "shadow blur radius" high to soften the shadows, but this causes the points blacks that you see ... I can not find solution ....

many thanks again...

waiting for help....

ghonma ( ) posted Thu, 15 November 2012 at 9:43 AM

Have you tried changing it to a spot light ?

Anyways, blurry shadows are really buggy in firefly for some reason. I also get lots of nasty artifacts if I set the blur radius higher then10-12. Dunno if there is any solution, sorry...

xpdev ( ) posted Thu, 15 November 2012 at 9:46 AM

this is only a test with a windows, but i need a scene with more windows and a spot light is not good for my work.

thanks the same....

I think this has to do with indirect light. You always get some strange things going on with shadows and indirect light. There are other people that know a lot more about it than I do. Maybe they will jump in.

The larger your light's "shadow blur radius" is, the more "shadow samples" you will need to get a smooth shadow (the setting is in the light properties just below the blur radius). With a blur radius of 20, try with "shadow samples" set to e.g. 200 or so (makes render times longer, so you might want to set a high value only for the final render).

primorge ( ) posted Thu, 15 November 2012 at 9:08 PM

millighost, is a blur radius/samples calculation x10 ( i.e. if the blur were set to 6, set samples to 60) be a good starting point formula for RT shadows?

Latexluv ( ) posted Thu, 15 November 2012 at 9:25 PM

Erm, can I ask why you'd want a shadow blur to be 20? I'm looking around my rec room right now lit by a flourescent light and I guesstimate the blur to be no more than a 5. Is the only light for your scene coming from the window? I usually use a shadow blur of 3 or 4 and put my samples at 50 to 70 on each light.

looks like I found my answer in a thereabouts yes from Latexluv, sorry for the hijack...

As an aside, the settings xpdev has in his screencap seemed rather unusual to me.

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Thu, 15 November 2012 at 10:00 PM

xpdev knows what he must do.  earth's sun and poser point-source ray-traced directional lights produce harsh direct shadow edges with some blurring that is a function of the distance from the shadow-casting edge to the shadowed surface, whilst a large diffuse-emitting surface will produce very soft shadows in poser.

luckybears ( ) posted Fri, 16 November 2012 at 5:44 PM

I think the hight the shadow blur  value the higher the pixel sampling should be set in render settings.

hborre ( ) posted Fri, 16 November 2012 at 6:53 PM

It was posted elsewhere that the rule of thumb for light shadow sampling should be 10x higher than the Shadow Blur Radius.
