Subject: Poser to Blender

I've been considering using Blender to enhance my Poser work.  I haven't tried to use Blender for a long time.  I"ve tried Wings and Amorphium ... but trying to "find" the Poser figure and re-scaling was difficult.  What is the proceedure with Blender?

If you are finding it difficult to locate the imported Poser figure in your scene try using Blenders outliner.  The imported figure should be listed there.  Simply select the Poser figure within the outliner and then scale the figure until its visible.

BTW, the figure will be called 'Mesh'.

Before getting into Blender, you might want to head over to Blender-Cookie and have a look at the getting started tutes. Blender is - to put it nicely - different. Incredibly powerful, incredibly feature-rich and brilliantly dynamic and growing. But different.

Takes a bit of getting used to.

I tried it about 8 years ago ... scaling is a hastle ... especially if one plans on making clothing for poser figures.  Any additional advice would be appreciated.  I noticed that there is a new shrink-wrap feature.  I've had a class in Lightwave so I understand and have used modeling programs.  I have used wings, milkshape, Amorphium and tried Hexagon.  I'm stull quite a novice though, I've consentrated on creating illustrations more than modeling.

Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have no issues importing figures or props into Blender. Generally, I open the wanted figure into Poser 2010, turn off IK, use the joint editor to zero rotations, and then export as a wavefront obj into a specific folder. It will import into Blender 2.64a nicely, although you will need to bring it forward in the viewport to work on it. I've tried Hex 2, modo 301, and Wings 3D and always return to Blender. It is very powerful, well supported and constantly improved by a very enthusiastic community. As RobynsVeil says, it takes a bit of getting used to but even that has improved over the last few releases. I strongly recommend it for modeling for Poser. The best part? It's free!

Reddog9 has an import/export tool he's developing for Blender (from/to Poser) that makes the process significantly less painful. Scaling your figure up 100% is important (I didn't used to and Blender wasn't very happy) because you lose a lot of precision trying to work at Poser's infinitesimal scale. I use 100 because it's an easy number to remember to scale up and down from/to.

Oh, and by the way, I was wrong about the re-name to "Mesh" - just tried this just now in Blender 2.64.9 (build 52402, I build my own from svn in Mint 13) and it named the figure what I'd named it in Poser. YAY!

I got back into Blender with the intent of creating dynamic clothing for V4 and Antonia (and whoever, actually) but sort-of got side-tracked. In a rather significant way: I finally ended up moving from Windows 7 to Mint 13 (Linux) 64-bit, got into Cycles - the new render engine for Blender - and associated materials and even started compiling my own version of Blender, so I'd have the latest/greatest. So making dynamic cloth sort-of went by the way-side for the time being. Going to get back to it soon, though... kind-of miss Poser... :blink:

I don't have any problems working with Poser figures in Blender at their default scale - whether to make clothes or face morphs. Set your cursor at 0,0,0 to start. Import, switch to orthographic view and then front view and zoom in.

Blender is great for clothing: Here is a brief outline of how I do a shirt or trousers. 

I start with a cube and build a simple frame with loop cuts and a few extrudes. Instead of subdividing I use loop cuts to get the mesh density to what I want. I have more control that way. I do the initial modelling with a mirror modifier. Apply the mirror modifier before using shrinkwrap (important). For an unscaled Poser figure I use an offset of .005 in the shrinkwrap modifier. Apply the shrinkwrap modifier and then go to sculpt mode to refine the shape and smooth the mesh. Sculpt with symmetry on the x-axis activated. You can switch between sculpt and edit as you need to - that is very convenient. Finally add the details like collars, pockets and buttons if you want to model those.

For a dress, I first make the bodice as above and then add the skirt by extruding downwards from the waist, keeping the mesh density fairly even. Then make the skirt more natural by sculpting it. Shrinkwrap is not good for skirts.

Add the seams and unwrap. Blender's UV-mapping tools are now very good, I see no need to use anything else. I especially like the UV-sculpt feature which enables you to really fine-tune the mapping very easily.

Looks to be an excellent workflow, Nanette! I haven't usedd the 'shrink-wrap' feature yet - so MUCH to learn!!
