Subject: Directory manager for Poser?

Prof_Null ( ) posted Sun, 09 December 2012 at 2:59 AM · edited Tue, 12 November 2024 at 1:58 PM

In DAZ Studio I can make my own directory and have things organised how I would expect to use them e.g. mats and props branching from the clothes themselves, morphs under the base character and so on.

Is there some handy addon that will let me do this with Poser? Did I see something like this here or was I imagining it? (I am using 2012)

The Poser Library is compatible with this approach certainly... i.e. it will show a hair prop or prop in the character section of the library, if you place these in the sme directory under one of the sections.

However the handy utility to organise this, that I use, is Windows Explorer / Finder ;-)

I don't know if SharerWorks Library Manager will achieve this perhaps, from within Poser... Estherau (or anyone else using this) might be able to advise?

Hmmm... seriously tempted by that myself, now it's on sale again.

EDIT: Cross-post with Ashley...

Gee, that's pretty neat, I watched one of the intro videos  - but it didn't quite do what I was talking about.

Ah, yes - there is a slight problem:  I have a Mac and it sure looks like Shaderworks Library Manager is Windows only.

Thanks anyway folks. Nice try. . . . . unless there is some other thingy hiding in the woodwork that will do this?

monkeycloud ( ) posted Sun, 09 December 2012 at 3:31 AM

I'm on OS X... so is Estherau who recommended this to me previously.

I've actually just gone ahead and purchased Shaderworks Library Manager 2.5... as far as I can see this is just Python based and platform independent.

But I'll let you know for sure once I get a chance to play with it.

I'm mid render just now, so will have to wait for that to complete before I can check it.

Thanks, Monkeycloud.☺

That would be great, it looks like it will help some.

I should have thought of that: if it's Python it will work regardless, only a matter of putting it in the right place and restarting the program.

Guess I'll be buying it myself . . . .

I'll be watching your gallery now too, monkeycloud:

I see some good stuff going on there !

Shaderworks' Library Manager is platform-independent for sure. I've been running it without any problems in Ubuntu linux since the first version came out.

Thanks very much Prof_Null :-)

Well, the latest render's almost there... should finish tonight... but planning to postwork this one more than I have previously done.

Hopefully get a play around with Shaderworks Library Manager shortly...

Quite a few nifty features in there by the sounds of it... Estherau certainly recommended it very highly to me a while back...

...I can let you know if I think it will achieve exactly what you're after... unless you've already bought it and tried it yourself now?

Not yet, I have to work, can't always be at the computer.

Your renders must take a while though . . . . . I lose patience within about 10 minutes -  I guess that's why I want a new computer !

A few days sometimes... ;-)

Well, Shaderworks Library Manager seems pretty nifty so far.

However, I have actually managed to crash Poser a couple of times using it... by (I think) accidentally launching it twice.

Also, I'm not yet sure if it will do exactly what you're after...

It certainly automatically parses for, displays the content assets applicable for the currently selected figure, when it is in smart mode. But I think you're maybe after something more manual?

I'll have to play with it a bit more...

Meantime, can anyone else advise, relative to Prof_Null's original question, how one might do this exact thing with ShaderWorks?

Prof_Null ( ) posted Mon, 10 December 2012 at 3:46 AM

After something manual? Not necessarily, it's more a matter of being able to find things, having one's own directory is good, yes, but being able to find all the associated things with a piece of clothing, character, prop or set is the point: rather than spending time going "where the heck are the mats for this?" and fiddling around for five minutes, I would like to concentrate on the actual creative side, you know - what we are here for.

Anyhoo from what you've said so far it is probably the best/only option.

Thanks for the info, if you have any more I'll drink it up happily !

monkeycloud ( ) posted Mon, 10 December 2012 at 4:09 AM

Just discovered I can dock it, which is good. I've only got the one (albeit reasonably big) screen.

Like the Poser Library, a second screen would be a big advantage I guess...

Anyway... yes Prof, after some more playing around, I'd say, following a bit of set up (once you've gone through the process to have it build its metadata - similar to DS I suppose) it likely will do what you're after then...

...hope that my input's been of some help at least. But yeah, you'll need to try it and see for yourself, I reckon, further to that ;-)

But I can happily post any more insight I get meantime as I play around with it...

Thanks again monkeycloud, I'm off to the store . . . . . :)

Most wonderful - currently "half price" at $12.50 - even better !

FYI there is also my P3dO Explorer which does this:

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/index.php?ViewProduct=93346

It is a Poser Library replacement, Poser Explorer, file manager, 3D viewer and unzipper.

Prof_Null and myself would need an OS X version... but looks good too otherwise ;-)

No problem... worth the heads-up for any Windows users lurking eh?...and I think they're possibly in the majority too? ;-)

as monkeycloud said, organising your content so everything for one asset is in one folder with subfolders branching off is very easy. depending on how large your runtime is you can either scrub it and start fresh, or when you install new content, install to a dummy folder first, dragging and dropping the subfolders into either the prop or figure folder.then install to your runtime( you might have to cut/copy/paste instead of drag/drop, not sure if Mac OS merges runtimes yet)

for the presently unorganized content, grab a few mins each day and organize a product or two. might take a while to do your entire runtime, but it pays in the long run with a much faster workflow.

Great thread! Just upgraded to PPro 2012 and was looking for something like the Library Manager to help with finding stuff when setting up a scene.  At 1/2 price, getting it was a no-brainer.

Should help save my sanity, I hope! Well, what's left of it...
