Subject: Opinions about where to install Poser 9.

wayneout ( ) posted Mon, 24 December 2012 at 9:03 PM · edited Mon, 20 January 2025 at 9:52 AM

Happy Holidays,

I decided to get Poser 9. I found it at a real good price, so I treated
myself to a Christmas gift.
I have Windows7, 64bit.  Where is the best place to install it?  I haven't
received it, but am getting prepared. I have Poser 7 and Poser 8 installed
under Programs (x86)
The reason I am asking is that I have the DSON importer and I would like to
use it for Poser 9, but I was told not to install it under the programs directory.
Thanks

I believe Poser 9 can be installed with the option to put the runtime in the My Documents folder so that the program folder does not include content that will cause UAC problems. With Poser 7 it was suggested in vista and win 7 to install the program outside the Program Files folder.

Markschum is correct.  You will be given several options for installation, each taking into account under which Operating System the application will reside.  For Vista, Win7 & Win8, the recommended option is to install the base program to the Programs Files folder but load the content to a share folder under Documents.  That share folder will be created as needed.  The DSON importer should be installed in relatively the same location, under Documents.

Thanks. I did not know about the options for Poser 9. I am glad that you
can install it somewhere other than under the programs folder.

Thanks again.

Hi

I install all my graphics software on a separate drive from Windows and I put the runtime in the Poser Folder where it's easy to find things.

I haven't had any problems, I've done this in Windows XP, 7 and now in Windows 8.

I just find it more convenient to have every thing in one loacation.

Poser is not dependent on Windows to any great extent, unlike a lot of software I found that poser will run if it is copied to a computer running either version of Windows without even being installed.

I ran Poser in Windows 8 from the copy installed in Windows 7 with no problems.

So I'd say you can install it anyplace you want.

The advantage of not installing it on the C: drive is that if you have to reinstall Windows it will still be up and running with all you  stuff intact.

I have the Poser application installed directly under the root directory, in:

C:Poser Pro 2012

(Poser Pro 2012 is just P9 with some extra bells and whistles)

I have the content installed in My Documents, under:

My Documents!Poser Content

The "!" in "!Poser Content" causes the folder to be listed as the first one in My Documents, because "!" has precedence in the list of alpha-numeric characters.

I am using Poser since version 2 and never install it in root partition and never have problem even i import Poser files in DAZStudio pro 4,5, Vue infinite 11  or Carrara

Now i have Poser pro 2012 installed in E: and DSON file with genesis working ok .Some preferences files are saved for example in c: users folder  but all the majority of the soft and data are in others partitions

I have older runtines in D: and E: and  indicate to Poser  where they are and have no problem when i load the pzz or figures or props or poses

I prefer to keep my root C as small as possible for more fast backup of it And now i have an SSD  with not as space as my older C hd

You just have verify and set correctly your soft parameters correctly

I am also using Windows  pro 64 bits

I have windows7 64 bits.

I've installed Poser 9 like this c:Poser 9

with the runtime inside this folder as usual but I can't install Victoria 4 !
(the extractor says : error reading ini file C:Program Files(X86)... etc...)

Where did I do wrong?

Thanks for your answer !
