Subject: How can Poser and Daz share downloaded files?

Realanise ( ) posted Tue, 09 April 2013 at 5:40 PM · edited Fri, 27 December 2024 at 5:13 AM

Hi all,

Okay, this is absolutely the LAST dumb question I'm going to ask for awhile. I swear. ;) But here it goes. I'm downloading all of the files for Vicky 4.2 pro pack. Per SmithMicro's page of instructions on the subject, they're all going in the "Vicky 4.2" folder I created inside the Poser runtime library. I also marked them as running in Poser each time (again, that's what SM said to do.) They all show up in Poser 2010, yay. BUT... the big question is, how do I also get them to show up and be usable in Daz (4.5)? Do I need to somehow link to that Poser folder within Daz? Do I need to download it all again into a Daz location, too? (I'll do it if I have to...)

Somebody must have done this before, and I'm sure it's answered somewhere, but I really couldn't find it. All help much appreciated. :)

Just make that runtime known to DS

Press F2, go to Content Library --> Content Directory Manager

and add to Poser formats (just the top level, the one above "runtime" in Poser)

I'm probably NOT doing this the right way... but I added the  Poser folder that was top level. (Programs-- Smith Micro-- Poser 2010.) Is that the right way to do it when everything is in the Vicky 4.2 folder I created in Runtime, though? I closed and restarted Daz, but I couldn't get anything to show up under actors, wardrobe, and props. Does it work anything like Poser (where it would show up in a different library folder at the top level?)

Thanks so much!

Sorry for the double post, but I think I went over the editing time...

entering the original folder (Vicky 4.2) produced the message that the path was already added. But I still don't know how to get the content to show up in Daz.

You can't use the so-called "Smart Content", you have to go to the actual folder.

Realanise ( ) posted Tue, 09 April 2013 at 7:05 PM

I WILL figure this out eventually!!!

In the meantime, here's what's going on:

In Poser Formats-- Poser 2010- 9 library items, each one is empty.

In Poser Formats-- My Library, only 2 folders show up: figures and poses. Figures only has the V4 clothing, and poses only has materials and a bodysuit. Everything else that was installed does show up in the Vicky folder in Poser's runtime folder.

Reviewing your previous posts, It looks like you not only installed to "Program Files" but also the main Poser runtime.  This is not good.

Content does not go in the main Poser library, it should go to a content folder.  Some people choose that horrid "MyDocuments/wholebunchofstuff" default.  I just choose a descriptive name, like "PP210content"

Installing anything to "Program Files" will give way to annoying problems with the UAC.  Most people recommend not disabling UAC, however it will cause problems if you need to write to there and hides files in virtual store locations.

To be honest, I think I've had it. The Smith Micro documentation is terrible in this area-- they give absolutely no clue that this is what you're supposed to do, and the directions say to do exactly what I did. A nervous breakdown would not be good. I'd like to just install everything directly in Daz. I only ended up getting about a fifth of the way through the content anyway. Do I have to first uninstall it where it is now?

(Thanks again for your infinite patience!!)

If you like, you can install directly to DS.  I'm assuming you are using their defaults, so just point the installer to wherever you have "MyLibrary".  You need not uninstall anything in Poser, but you might remove that entry in DS for the Poser runtime for the time being.

However, keep in mind that many people successfully integrate poser runtimes into DS.  The picture I posted shows some of the runtimes that DS knows about.  Altogether I have 26 linked to DS.

create a folder on your desktop call it something like 3d content

install everything to it

then point both poser and studio to it...they should show up in both programs.

I think the problem is the runtime folder you are using is in one of the Program Files folders.  Do not put user data there, these are protected folders ever since Vista.  Since you are using both Studio and Poser it would be best to create a new shared runtime library.  The recommended location is either the User Documents or Public Documents folders.  I don't like loading up the Desktop as SickenlySweete suggested.  If you have a separate data drive or partition that would the best location.

i use and external drive and the documents default folder for ds...

but, i suggested the desktop one for beginners , as its easy for them to find and install into....lol

DAZ and Poser handle things differently.

Start here: http://www.daz3d.com/install-manager-info/

Install one thing at a time checking each program for the results.

Examine the file locations being loaded each time, to see what is being changed.

Soon you will begin to figure out how it works.

Good luck!
