Subject: Genesis in Poser without DSON

It looks like it is possible to use Genesis in Poser without the DSON Exporter.  After struggling with Genesis in Poser with DSON, I was looking for help. I came across a video tutorial on how to use CR2 Exporter to get Genesis into Poser 9. The video was made by DAZ before they released DSON. In the video, they said that Genesis is a low polygon model and since Poser does not have subdivision, she would not look good. The video did not even mention how to get her morphs into the clothing.

What they said was true with Poser 9/Poser Pro 2012, but not true with Poser 10/Poser Pro 2014. The new version of Poser came with Sub Division and a feature to copy morphs from a figure into clothes. After banging my head against DSON, I wanted to see if Poser Pro 2014 could make Genesis more usable. I decided to run a test and exported Genesis and a simple swimsuit.

Attached is an example of the results, I was able to conform the swimsuit and copy the Genesis morphs to it. I set Genesis to use Poser's subdivision to a value of one. The results match up with Genesis via DSON. According to the CR2 Exporter documentation, it generates weight mapped file. So, we do not lose that feature.

I am not a real big fan of the DSON Exporter. I prefer to use pmd files to keep file sizes down. But, Genesis from DSON does work with pmd files. Even more annoying, DSON will lock up Poser's library when it is set to embedded.

However, there are some downsides to use the CR2 Exporter. Obviously, all clothing items would have to converted. And, I do not know how to export out poses, props, hair, and materials without DSON. Also, I have not tested with Genesis 2 Female.

I know most Poser users are not thrilled with Genesis. This new method presents her in a form that is familiar to us Poser users. This was one test. Since, my poser time limited, hopefully other will try out this technique and find ways to export the items I could not.

The cr2 exporter method has been around since the release of DS4.  One of their vendors even sells a tutorial on how to do it. 

It's still a royal pain to have to jump through all the hoops.

Supposedly the DSON transfer morphs script will work on exported cr2 clothing, but I haven't yet tried it myself.

I wish that the export process could be automated...

Well, if that's a pic of the result, it looks like there are still a lot of problems.  The figure is hideously distorted.  :D

You are right, icprncss2. It is a lot of hoops to jump through. I too really wish it automated.

From what I can tell most Poser users have given up on Genesis. There is no really neat feature that is worth going through the hassel setting this all up.

The funny thing is so to speak is that while dson is a pain it works better in Poser 9/PP2012 since in a sense it was written for P9/PP2012 and not really for Poser 10 / PP2014 as we all know how dog slow it is at least for me.. 

My thinking is as mentioned that since there was no SubD in P9/PP2012..  But why it should take longer to do anything in P10/PP2014 who knows. All I do know is it is very annoying all the same.

It's gonna require a ton of work to get DAz results in Poser that match 100%

I really want the sasquatch figure for freak 5 at daz and the super suit... but without the hair option he looks stupid and the DSON imported crashed poser twice for me and had to start over:( Plus the super suit doesn't work with the dang importer anyway:( Now using Pro2014 and it's fairly stable... DAZ just isn't getting my bucks anymore and I'm sticking with V&M4! Genesis isn't worth the effort! I think DAZ should drop their own software or create both a poser and studio version for all their content! I use to spend about a 100 bucks a month at DAZ, now less then a 100 a year:( Just my buck 50 worth on the subject:)

 I am in the same boat. My spending at Daz has plummeted. I did spend a few hundred on Genesis related products-but my patience with DSON slowness wore thin. I have a few characters -Mec4D's Genesis Neanderthal stands outs that I am willing to put up with DSON to use-but all the iterations of V5 and the many morphs are going unused.

Geografting never worked for me-it just crashed Poser2012 SR1-SR3

I did give DS4.5 a fair go of it-but could never get the quality of renders I have with PoserPro2012/2014. I participated on their forums with others to get the same quality of SSS with DS-and no one was successful. The new SSS shader with 4.6 is better-but they are not quite "there' yet.

Daz sends me 60% off offers. I do watch for sales on StoneMason's buildings-which I find superb.

it looks to me like willdial is on the right track to make genesis useful in poser.  WE just need some way I think of getting materials on clothing to export or convert with some script.  Maybe someone clever will do it.  If DAZ wanted they could do it.  oh well.

At first I figured everyone must be doing what I did, but apparently not, since they are still holding course. I get coupons for $6 off all the time, but there isn't anything I want to use them with, so they just expire. 

Vicky 6 came out and I looked over the requirements and closed the window. I did check to see if any of the new content would work natively in poser, but after a few items, I just closed out the site altogether. 

I did spend a lot when they had the artist sales back a few months ago, catching up on some really nice settings by a couple of folks (I got way too many medieval buildings;). But, that's about it for me these days. Now I need to figure out what to render with those buildings.

I think what happened was first there was a way to export a low poly genesis in poser but it was too low poly to be useful, then came DSON, and then people tried to use that and it could get the correct looking textures into poser but it turned out to be too slow, as even after loading the figure the DSON script keeps running whenever you pose the character.  Now in poser pro 2014 there is subd and maybe we should go back and look at abandoning DSON which has  been a failure and go back to the original way.

You can get genesis into PP2014 at high resolution. That is not really the problem. The real problem is afterwards: Each time when new morphs for it are released you have to create a new genesis figure with the new morphs added. This makes the figure very large. The other problem is that you will need the morphbrush to correct any pokethrough after posing to compensate for the different rigging of genesis - this works fine most of the time, but can be tricky when limbs are too close to the body.

Then there is the problem of all the poses, expressions, props, clothing which are all delivered in DUF format - so you will have to convert each of them to poser format. Add to that, that you have to make sure that all the morphs are present in the clothing before you convert to Poser format. This is a very timeconsuming process if you have to do a lot of them

And of course you have to adjust all material settings if there is no poser equivalent in the product

With the DSON importer most of this is taken care of. But it is at the expense of serious performance problems

I occasionally use genesis: I load a genesis figure in a poser enabled PP2012, add the clothing, hair and the morphs and materials. Then I save the entire set to the library. After that I can use the figure in a non-DSON enabled PP2014.
Of course if you want to change the clothing or add a morph you have to do the whole thing again

wimvdb is right about certain things. When new morphs are added to Genesis in DAZ Studio, you will need to create a new Genesis CR2 to get the morphs. But, you will not need generate a new CR2 for clothing. I used PP2014 Copy Morphs feature to copy the Genesis morphs to the clothing figure when I use it. And, I only copy the morphs I use. I will have to copy the morphs every time I use the clothing item. I do that now for Victoria 4 clothes. They never come with the morphs I want to use.

In my test, I exported Genesis with High Resolution, per the tutorial. But she still looked jagged. I had to use the PP2014's SubDivision feature to make her look smooth. I think PP2014 did a better job on Genesis subtle features (ear and fingernails) than DSON.

Poke-through has been a long issue with me. I got poke-through with Victoria 4 and Genesis via DSON. In fact, I get pokethrough issues with any figure. I must admit that PP2014's morph brush is easier to use than PP2012's morph brush.

I ran a test recently. I loaded my Genesis CR2 into the scene. I then used DSON to load a pose for Genesis. It posed Genesis CR2 just fine. I also used DSON to load a material for Genesis. It did that OK as well. We may not be able to get rid of DSON, but we can reduce it's annoyances.

Most of the morphs are transferred, but not all of them (it depends on how they are made). Morphs based on magnets can be a problem with Copy Morphs

With the morph brush set to a large brush and high impact, fixing poke through is usually a matter of 2 seconds. But when the limbs get close to the body, the morph brush can not figure out which bodyparts the cloth should fit to. That can be done with the restore and pull brushes, but that takes more time to get right

About poses and expressions - without DSON it takes a LOT of time to get the morphs converted and then you have to create the thumbnails as well. With DSON, you still have to load each one fo them and save them seperately. That is a lot of work as well

If you want to stay with a single Poser installation, you can move the DSON folder in addons to a safe place if you want to use Poser without DSON and move it back when you need it. A Poser restart is required however.

So if you are determined to use genesis, you can - with and without DSON. But it is a quite laborous experience.

I believe that is the main reason why Poser users have not imbraced Genesis. It's just too much work.
