Subject: Transfer V4 textures automatically to other characters...

konan ( ) posted Sat, 06 July 2013 at 3:05 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 10:52 PM

Attached Link: realityPaint

Heya, this is Dave from [realityPaint](http://www.realitypaint.com/main), and I have been asked by many people in the community to develop a utility to automatically transfer V4/M4 textures to other characters.

I am confident that I could develop this tool, but it would be very specific... i.e. From V4 to Roxie, V4 to Michelle, etc. This is because each figure would require a significant amount of pre-processing, and it may not be very practical to make a tool where you do that yourself.

This tool could be provided as a part of realityPaint (formerly Blacksmith3D-Suite ), or it may be a stand-alone utility, depending on demand, etc.

So, what I am asking all of you is...

  1. Would you be interested in this tool?
  2. What would be your top 3 texture transfer paths ( e.g. Victoria 4 -> Roxie, Michael 4 -> Rex, etc. )?
  3. Are you REALLY interested in it??? ;D

So, based on your feedback, I'll determine if this is a viable product and start investigating how to implement it. I thank you in advance for you opinions,
Dave

  1. No interest.  If I want to transfer V4 textures, there are existing accurate tools.

  2. Personal Opinion, people that use Smith Micro Figures tend not to spend money.

  3. as above, no interest

willyb53 ( ) posted Sat, 06 July 2013 at 3:38 PM

Stand alone.

primarly from DAZ to non DAZ characters (V4 to Dawn?), there is already TC2 for DAZ to DAZ characters. One of the reason non DAZ characters are not used much is the lack of textures.

interest would depend on price, I would not get reality paint to get it, but if priced comprable to TC2 I definatly would

  1. Yes!
  2. V4 and M4 to those you listed, plus Alyson (to use for Anastasia) and the new Dawn figure as well.
  3. YES! As a stand alone product though, please. :)

Being able to use the existing skin textures that I have for V4 and M4 on the newer figures would be a big selling point for me.

  1. Yes
  2. Victoria 4 -> Dawn, Victoria 4 -> Alyson
  3. Yes, as a standalone.

Morana ( ) posted Sat, 06 July 2013 at 4:44 PM

1)  Yes, if the cost is reasonable for a hobbiest.

2)  V4 to Dawn would be my current desire, as well as M4 to her eventual partner.

3)  Considering how much it will open up use of Dawn right out of the gate.... YES! hehe

Standalone please...

V4 and V3 to Dawn would be lovely :). After all...I have more beautiful V3/A3 textures than anything else. LOL

Please don't forget V3-->whatever

GeneralNutt ( ) posted Sat, 06 July 2013 at 5:14 PM

How good would the conversion be?

I am only interested in conversions if they are excellent.

Stand Alone would be prefered.

V4- Roxie, V4- Alyson (to use for Anastasia), M4 - Rex.

ssgbryan ( ) posted Sat, 06 July 2013 at 5:40 PM

I'd be interested - I use SM figures, & I don't have a problem paying for products, so Medzinatar is wrong on that issue.

My wants would be: V4 to Jessi/Sydney/Olivia; V4 to Alyson 2; V4 to Miki3

M4 to James/Kelvin/Koji/Simon; M4 to Ryan

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Sat, 06 July 2013 at 5:44 PM · edited Sat, 06 July 2013 at 5:45 PM

What's been said. BUT with the addition that "people that use SM figures dont want to spend money" is rubbish IMO. We absolutely DO. But there's not much to spend money ON because content creators tend to play it safe and make everything for the Daz figures.

So it's a vicious circle. People don't use the SM figures because they lack content. And content creators do't make content because people don't use the figures...

What i've made the the SM figures has sold well.

Standalone.  I would want V4 to Dawn and V4 to Antonia.

As for whether I'm REALLY interested...that depends on the price, of course.  :-)

toastie ( ) posted Sat, 06 July 2013 at 5:53 PM

Yes, as a standalone product.

V4 -> A3 and V4 -> Alyson2/Anastasia.

Would definitely be interested if the conversions were good enough to be as good as the originals and if the A3 and Anastasia conversions were included..

  1. Would you be interested in this tool? Yes

  2. What would be your top 3 texture transfer paths ( e.g. Victoria 4 -> Roxie, Michael 4 -> Rex, etc. )? Victoria 4 -> Dawn, Micheal 4 -> Future male Dawn counterpart, Victoria 4 -> Miki 4

  1. Are you REALLY interested in it??? Yes. I would buy this product on day one if it is a standalone.

hborre ( ) posted Sat, 06 July 2013 at 5:58 PM

TC2 has not been updated in years and I foresee no further development with that app any time in the near future.  Another standalone program would be nice esoecially if the algorithm remains true to replicating the textures (including bump, displacement, transparencies, etc) across other models at different resolutions.  It might be a bit much to request all human models to be inclusive, but an add-on modular system, much like TC1 & 2, would be convenient to cover the popular meshes.

I concur with all those listing their choices, those models are still rather common and usable.

toastie ( ) posted Sat, 06 July 2013 at 6:21 PM

Ah! Forgot..... also would want to have M4 -> Ryan2/Tyler.

(How did I forget that one?!)

surreality ( ) posted Sat, 06 July 2013 at 6:40 PM

I would absolutely be interested. Since I use (and highly recommend) realityPaint, I would love to see this included in the feature set. Using the similar transfer brush already has been a lifesaver, and this functionality would be magnificent.

I would suggest V4 -> Dawn; V4 -> Alyson for initial transfers. (I don't have a suggestion for the third off hand, as Genesis can load V4 maps, as can Genesis2 with an add on that make the current transfer tools in realityPaint work nicely across that character group. :) )

I'd love to see this functionality as a part of realityPaint, or potentially as a 'plugin' for realityPaint to integrate into the workflow that could also be a standalone for this function for those who don't currently use the software or don't have a need for it beyond the transfer cabilities. (But you should use it, folks. You really, really should! It's good stuff.)

V4 to Dawn

V4 to Roxie

M4 to Dawn's male counterpart (not developed yet)

Standalone or addon to reality paint....either way is good. Keeping fingers crossed this happens soon!

I have TC2, but as there are no updates at the moment ...

Standalone only

V4 > Roxie

V4 > Miki 3/4

M4 > Rex

Certain buy, but the timing depends on the price.

I agree with all of that (apart from the person who said they weren't interested). I would love such a tool for mutliple figures as outlined and including the new dawn when she arrives.

Also, an important thing to note -- some have mentioned the existing texture transfer tools on the market. Those? PC only. Mac users (hi there! waves frantically) are shut out there unless we install Windows (no offense, but also no thanks). The crew at Blacksmith3D and realityPaint have been VERY good to both mac and PC users and provided stable options for both platforms. While it may not be relevant to the majority out there, it is intensely so to some of us! grin

Hi Surreality. I use a utility called crossover which runs windows software without needing windows installed. I use morphing clothes utility, clother, and also all the taosoft utilities. I also opened crossdresser but couldn't work out the liscencing thing - I don't think my problems were to do with the running of the software though, just that I couldn't work out how to use it.

but yes, I prefer the software to natively support mac.  but if it doesn't and I want it, I am sure I'll get it working without needing windows.

Love esther

I may have to pick your brain about that later, esther. :) There are a couple of utilities that would certainly come in handy that way!

I just always want to point it out when someone does provide great mac support, in part because it's generally not advertised enough when someone does (and for the most part, we're used to just assuming things won't, which is a shame and probably gets some great products overlooked).

toastie ( ) posted Sun, 07 July 2013 at 5:57 AM

No idea how you're planning to arrange this - but something like XDresser would be good where you can just pay for the figure licences you need. I would have no interest in some of the figures suggested here as the top 3 (and I'm sure there are plenty of people who have no interest in my top 3 either), so the choice of figures supported by the product would be very important to begin with.

JoePublic ( ) posted Sun, 07 July 2013 at 6:12 AM

Not interrested in any of the SmithMicro meshes, but a conversion from V4 to Dawn would certainly be welcome.

V3 to Dawn would be nice to have, too.

ZBrush and Topogun are two applications I know of that can transfer texture maps between models. If you're curious how they do that you can have a look at those apps. Maybe it'll give you some ideas.

V4 to Dawn.

I'd pay up to 12 bucks for ths product.   or less if you go the way of Evil Innocent's clothing converter, where the base is free, but the targets are sold.....  If I have to pay for individual transfers, I'm not sure how much I'd be willing to spend.   10$ seems a safe minimum.

I would like V4,M4 to the SmithMicro characters and maybe ApolloMax. I would like to see the texture conversions to include the genital textures... TC2 would not do this. I also have alot of Mike 3 textures which would be nice to convert to M4 and the SmithMicro characters.... thanks for considering this work.

konan ( ) posted Sun, 07 July 2013 at 8:21 PM

It's starting to look like Dawn would be a great place to start. The project will definitely support several characters, but it's best to start with what is most popular.

I'll be doing some preliminary investigations this week and will keep everybody posted on the progress. Kickstarter does sound like a good idea... should know if it is relevant to this particular project at the week's end.

why re-invent the wheel?

I would contact the maker of TC2 and see if you could develope some plug-ins for that...sounds like a lot less work. besides most people probably have TC2 already and it makes more sense to have new plugins for software that we already have.

@ghostship2: I could be wrong but I'm quite certain that TC2 is mainly for DAZ figures... The majority of the figures we're all interested in are not DAZ figures (ex: Dawn, Miki 4, Roxie, etc)

It would certainly be nice if they were willing to make more plug-ins but since Dawn is so close to being released, I think a new program is the way to go.

As there is a Miki2 plugin, I don't think it's restricted to Daz figures.

There is a higher probability that Miki4 and Roxie simply don't have that much support because things for them are selling less.
