Subject: How do I turn TEARS material off completely?

Darkworld ( ) posted Thu, 18 July 2013 at 12:29 PM · edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 8:58 AM

It seems no matter how i change the settings it still wants to show up as a black line when i render... very faint but nevertheless incredibly annoying.  How do i make the tears 100% invisible?

This is V4 in PPro 2012

Thanks!

In the advanced material room settings

Transparency = 1

Every other setting = 0

Thank you for the help!

The dust settled, thinking "what a fine home, at least for now" not realizing that doom would soon be coming in the form of a vacuum cleaner.

Yeah that's what I have and still getting a tiny line... Oh well may just have to ignore it

andolaurina ( ) posted Thu, 18 July 2013 at 1:23 PM

Are you using AO?

I'm not sure ill check on that when I get home

"That's what I have"

You have Transparency_Falloff set to 0?

A lot of people don't pay attention and leave Transparency_Edge at 0 (which is opaque) and Transparency_Falloff not zero. This would cause it to be visible.

Your tear material should lok exactly like the attached photo.

You should check every light and make sure that AO is not on. (although that shouldn't create your problem.)

If all of that is 100% the same in the advanced material settings, then you should double-check the eye texture itself.

To make this even easier, I'm attaching an MT5 file for use in Poser.

Anyone who runs across this file is free to redistribute it; just don't modify it.

Oops, I can't upload an MT5 file on the forums. Sorry.

Rename the file .mt5.txt and you can upload it. Then downloaders just have to remove the .txt to get it back as an .mt5.

Excellent idea. See attached.

Thanks, BB. Helpful as always. :)

Mhm... did I misunderstood BB? He stated "a lot of people don't pay attention and leave Transparency_Edge at 0 (which is opaque)" but you, Andolaurina, left Transparency_Edge at O. It should be 1 to be not opaque. Or is that errror on my side (lost in translation)?

bagginsbill ( ) posted Fri, 19 July 2013 at 5:55 AM · edited Fri, 19 July 2013 at 5:56 AM

Quote - Transparency_Edge at 0 (which is opaque) and Transparency_Falloff not zero.

When Transparency_Falloff is zero (as it is in andolaurina's material screen shot above), the Transparency_Edge value is ignored and does not affect anything.

Okay. I was not aware what Transparency_Falloff really means. Only changed that setting once for testing and did not notice a change. I understand  per cent values better. Is that the distance a transparency is visible within an object?

bagginsbill ( ) posted Fri, 19 July 2013 at 4:19 PM · edited Fri, 19 July 2013 at 4:20 PM

Transparency_Falloff (if non zero) says that the transparency is a blend between the two transparency values that preceed it.

The blending is based on Edge_Blend, and the falloff is actually the same as Edge_Blend Attenuation.

In non-math terms, it means shift the in-between values more or less towards the edge.

In math terms, the blending coefficient is:

cos(angle_of_incidence) ** Transparency_Falloff
