I see the page you included at the begining is for a addon to create this type of effect. I found a free tutorial on this page that might help guide you in how to achieve the effect http://www.obsidiandawn.com/creating-realistic-embroidered-text-or-designs-in-photoshop-tutorial It is also available in a free downloadable PDF
Hope this helps some

Thanks, but it's not what I need exactly. I tried a similar technique - http://www.psd-dude.com/tutorials/photoshop.aspx?t=sewing-embroidery-effect-in-photoshop, but embroidery comes out too flat and not realistic at all, it's nice for a scrapbook page or web album but not for texturing in 3D. I try to get the closest effect to that addon from GraphicRiver, but I cannot figure out, how to fill a shape with such stitches - may it be filling with a brush or something like this?
When considering to use with in 3D to give a more realistic appearence at times it takes a combination of not only creating the diffuse or color image but then augmenting it with a combination of image maps like bump normal and perhaps abient occlusion map to give that appearence of more depth and realistic look. Some of this can be accomplished in Photoshop or within a 3D application. Here is a tutorial that explains what I am trying to express it is not specific to embroidery but will explain how the use of these additional textures will give a more realistic look to something created with in photoshop.
http://www.cgtextures.com/content.php?action=tutorial&name=normalmap
This is but one approach there are many more that go into more detail in how to add more depth to something to give it the look you are searching for.

Quote - good one..never knew about the nvidia normal map plug in for PS...thanks
Yes that one is a good one but I have found a similar one in Gimp that actually produces not only the normal map but the
The script produces different files within the original image's directory:
the _n is the normal map,
the _s is the specular,
the _d is the diffusion (just the color)
the _a is the ambiend occlusion
the _h is the displacement (or height map)
http://registry.gimp.org/node/28117
Have found that it works best with the latest version of Gimp and the plug in is called Insane Map it is as close to using crazybump without the price. Of course these then can be more fine tuned in a 3D app like Blender which is becoming much more robust

Thanks for the tutorial about Nvidia plugin, but all the same it seems it requires a good diffuse. That's why i thought it would be ideal to generate normal and bump maps from such realistic fake embroidery diffuse as in this Realistic Embroidery. The problem is I don't know how to get this specific fill - I cannot buy it through Paypal because of problem with credit cards and so I'd wish to make a similar effect by myself (and maybe to alter it slightly, if necessary). I guess the author used some stitch brush but brushes can be used just along contours, eh? (He mentioned in the description -
How to get contours inside of a vector shape? What can be done in Photoshop to get such an effect -http://0.s3.envato.com/files/82030374/02_stylewars.jpg ? (I mean Style Wars logo). I'm not very experienced in Photoshop and don't know all its possibilities, maybe there is someone more versed, so couldn't you tell me where can I find a possible answer - maybe there are some good scrapbooking or web design forums and communities, where designers have dealt with a similar problem?
Which plugin the Nvidia? Looks like it is windows I did not see a mac version but have to make sure you get the either the 32bit or 64bit for your version of Photoshop here is where you can get the lastest version https://developer.nvidia.com/gameworksdownload#?dn=texture-tools-for-adobe-photoshop-8-55 If your asking about the ones for Gimp that I am unsure about all I know is that when installing Gimp you have to do custom install at least on Windows and make sure that included Python package is installed so the scripts will work no sure how it installs on a Mac. Hope this helps some Bobby

I dont think the gimp scripts and plugins are OS specifc as long as when you install Gimp all the python libararies are installed with Gimp

gotcha...some one posted a WINDOWS ONLY version which I also dl'd...will keep y posted. Am undecided on reinstalling Gimp as yet. Wish PS handled that script.
Once
in a while I look around,
I see
a sound
and
try to write it down
Sometimes
they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
The Sun comes up again
PS has the Nvidia one which is alright but just seems the insane one for gimp gives you the ability to create more than just the normal map

After watching the tutorial video for that first product (the actions), it seems to have embroidery brushes included that are used in the actions and are edited a crap ton.
Watch the vid, around 0:43, s/he expands one of the actions and scrolls through it. It seems to have been a pretty massive process this person created the actions for.
It looks like the brushes are applied over the whole thing, effects are applied, more brushes, move that new layer slightly, more effects, rinse and repeat until you have that embroidered look.

If I knew/trusted that site, I'd gladly pay the $4 for that sucker (and quite possibly his Flour & Powder and Retro ones too).

Yes, thanks, lately I got info about a similar technique of multiple stroking contours. It seems one should fill the whole shape or text with black or any solid color, select it, make it a new contour and stroke with any chosen brush (it may be X-shaped brush to imitate criss-cross embroidery or a slant () stitch). As a result it produces stitched contours and the black core, which must be selected once again with the magic wand (if the brush is wide, the selection may be shrunk by few pixels), turned into a new layer and the whole process must be repeated again until all the shape is filled with stitch strokes. It's a bit slow but I tried and it works. It may be the source of actions, I think. Maybe when I find a good natural-looking style for realistic sewing stitches, I'll make my own action, though simpler, of course... It makes an effect of handmade embroidery, it looks in 3D software a bit more realistic than machine embroidery designs, made in professional embroidery software (Web is abound with such pictures, but they look often as simple beveled text). Thanks for advice.
Yes,it helps something not so like Premium.

Hello!
Couldn't anyone help me decipher this Photoshop technique used in this actions - Realistic Embroidery - Photoshop Actions ( http://graphicriver.net/item/realistic-embroidery-photoshop-actions/6913493?ref=BlackNull )?
I wanna make similar effect to imitate handmade embroidery on 3D clothing (it seems to be very good for bump maps), and I guess the author used filling vector shapes (or text) with some pattern, but I cannot clear out what namely, how to achieve such irregular stitching within text or shapes? I found just a simpler way to fill the shape with a pattern of slant stripes (imitates machine embroidery), but it' s not what I need. And how to get such naturally embossed embroidery? There is a video on that page but it demonstrates some preset and I cannot understand the technique from this tutorial - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVux7OYt894&feature=youtu.be
If you have this addon or have any ideas, I'd be very grateful to hear them.
And there is another beautiful style for stitching and embroidery -Embroidery. 100+ Sewing Stiches with Fabrics ( http://graphicriver.net/item/embroidery-100-sewing-stiches-with-fabrics/7337171?WT.ac=search_item&WT.seg_1=search_item&WT.z_author=joiaco ) - how to make such one? I guess it's simple but cannot find right settings for bevel and emboss, gradients etc.
Thank you in advance for answer, I looked for this answer in many Photoshop forums but did not get it so far. Maybe because nobody but 3D artists or maybe scrapbookers is busy with making such fake embroidery.
