Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
Silo got an update last week. And I would say even if it weren't updated anymore it is well worth 20 buck.
"Dream like you'll live forever. Live like you'll die tomorrow."
Yes!
* Silo* is my favorite modeler for Poser! It has an uncluttered interface and is easy to learn; as you gain proficiency, you can then peek into the depth of the tools it offers. Yes, a 2.3 update just came out, and a license is good for installing on three computers.
Poser 12, in feet.
OSes: Win7Prox64, Win7Ultx64
Silo Pro 2.5.6 64bit, Vue Infinite 2014.7, Genetica 4.0 Studio, UV Mapper Pro, UV Layout Pro, PhotoImpact X3, GIF Animator 5
Yes! Definitely worth it. Modeling and UV mapping can be learned rather quickly. The modeling tools are great. Most everything you need can be found with just a right mouse click. UV mapping is pretty easy and the resulting maps come out pretty good.
I'd suggest you take some time and go through all the tutorials here
http://www.nevercenter.com/silo/?section=tutorials
Pay particular attention to anything by Glenn Southern.
It won't take you too long, and when you're done you'll have a very good understanding of Silo and it's tools.
I am using Silo and have purchased and worked through a number of the tutotials here at Rendo by Fugazi1968 who uses Silo for most of them. There is one tutorial in Prime, if you are a Prime member and, if not, the tutorials are on sale at the moment.
I found Silo easy to learn, at least the basics, and while I generally have little success learning, particularly by reading, I found the tutorials a great help as I was able to see what Silo looked like in the video and match it to my model in Silo itself.
Tutorials or not, if you want to start doing some modelling I would say it is a steal at $20.
I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 - Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU . The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.
Where is it being offered for 20 bucks??? It's not a crack, is it?

I absolutely love Silo. I use it all the time. It's well worth that amount. I have made props, plants and clothes for Genesis 1 & 2 figures in it. If you need a way to learn it, I would recommend checking out Fugazi1968's tutorials in his shop. The tutorials he has are done 90% in Silo.
There are also wonderful You Tube videos. It's quick and easy to learn and the interface is not that scary.

No, it's one of those bundles that you see everywhere these days. MacHeist is the one in particular, though, I think all of the programs have mac and PC options. I don't think I'm permitted to post a link, but you can just paste that name in followed by dot com...:)
I bought one of their bundles a few years ago to get Scrivener, which required me to actually register with the vender to receive the serial number. So, unless something has changed, the software in the bundle is legitimate. As is usually the case, it's the only program in the bundle that has any value to me (though, there is another 3D tool that might be useful, but I've never heard of it).
Technically offsite linking is allowed if they are asking for something. For example, if I went in and said.. hey guys I'm looking for this hair (picture). Then its ok for people to post offsite links.
In this situation I think it would be okay to post a link since Silo plays an important role to this 3D community.
Silo is absolutely worth it. Get it.

OK. Here is the link, in case anyone else is interested in checking it out. MacHeist deals are generally mac based, so if you are a PC user, you would definitely want to doublecheck that the bundle does include licenses for the PC versions.

The page says:
'And, just in case you’re having trouble keeping your creative drive confined to one computer, we’re including not only the Mac version, but also the Windows and Linux versions.'
Sounds worth a try.
Just in case any Windows users are having issues with this, I ran into this problem:
I purchased the bundle and once I got the registration I went to http://nevercenter.com/silo/ and downloaded the version for Windows.
When I installed, it cried about settings missing in My Documents and the whole interface was dark (it should be medium-grey) and no widgets anywhere.
If this happens, close Silo.
Go to where you installed it and there will be a .zip, SDCopy.zip.
Go to your Users Directory: C:UsersYOURUSERNAMEDocuments and make a new folder called Silo Data.
Unzip SDCopy.zip to that folder.
Restart Silo. All should be good.
.
Thanks for the tip. Got Silo and installed it. It works!

I generally avoid taking advantage of any kind of deal like this without doing plenty of research, and found a review on cgchannel
I followed that to the Silo forum on CGTalk. According to a few threads there, this is the first update for Silo in over 3 years. The original developers abandoned the program some time ago. And the Windows version is 32-bit only.
I'm gonna save my $20 and continue learning how to use Blender.
I picked it up. Thanx for this pointer.

The ability to draw your topology on the model with a pen is just great, and hopefully wont be as buggy as topogun can be.

Reminds me of this funny video. Silo users seem to have mixed feelings about stability though. Not so much here on Rosity, but from what I've seen in other forums. The new Linux release should help with stability issues when dealing with higher poly models.

I downloaded from the same link yesterday. Did you experience any PC oddness after installing? Windows 7 Pro started prompting me to back up my file encryption certificate and key. I had some internet connectivty problems, and then storms rollled in so I decided to shut down for bed. After restarting the computer this morning, and letting Silo run for a while, I haven't seen that message again. Now, i'm really concerned though. I e-mailed a friend that's a bit more tech-saavy than myself, but I thought I'd ask you if you had experienced anything odd...
The only other significant download I completed yesterday was SR 3.1 for Poser Pro 2014, but I hadn't installed it (wanted to read the documentation).
Really hoping I haven't got a major issue going on... sigh

There is a macheist bundle featuring Silo for 19.99. I remember Silo was very popular for a while, but my ambitions as a modeler were a bit low, and I never picked it up. I believe that it's no longer being updated, but I wonder if it's worth paying $20 for. Does anyone still use it to create stuff to be used in Poser? Can you both model and create reasonable UV Maps within it without spending weeks to learn how to use it?
