Really very good points. The "Generic Female Caucasian Face" bit reminded me of the old 3DCC Poser days, with all those characters adapted from Posette, using minimal face and body morphing.
There's a lot to think about, there. I rather wonder if my own difficulties with modern takes on superheroes, for instance, have something to do with the level of detail in the material. The simpler, more iconic comics of the past required the reader to fill in more blanks with imagination, and as more detail is added and greater "realism" is approached, it feels like they're trying to tell me what to think. There's a distancing effect. The result is less immersive or engaging, to me at least. My current favorite superhero project is the artfully lo-fi Electra Elf, and perhaps there's a reason for that. I wonder whether I'll find the added detail in a high-resolution Blu-ray release of Batman 1966 somehow off-putting. Hmm.

Really good points, and a point I had made elsewhere. Wonder Woman is a hard character to cast. But I still feel there were other choices they could have made and didn't. We don't have access to the script, or to the thinking behind the casting, so we can't fathom why she was chosen.
But I do know this: we went from rumors that Wonder Woman would make "an appearance" in the new Man of Steel movie to Gal Gadot being cast as Wonder Woman with nothing in between. There is no mention anywhere of any other actress being considered, auditioning; nothing. I am betting with all the security on this film that there was an audition, with every actress who tried out having to sign a NDA...
And I wasn't there, but I heard through some grapevine somewhere that it is more than likely the costume revealed at Comicon probably won't be what we see on screen. It was more or less a concept. I kind of hope so. The costume I made for Sydney at the start of this thread isn't great, but it's still better than what Gal was wearing in that reveal. At least in my opinion.
If I had a nickle for ever time a woman told me to get lost, I could buy Manhattan.
I'm not looking for perfection when they bring these characters to life. I suppose I'd be a little less fussy if they were going by written word discription rather than sequential art, but it's not imposssilbe. If I can accept Halle Berry as a blonde Sue Storm, I have NO problem accepting an actress like Catherine Bell. Heck if it was for the physical activity the role is likely to call for, I'd still vote for Catherine Bell.
Actually, it was Jessica Alba as a blonde Sue Storm, but I get what you are saying. Suspension of belief is a major factor that makes any of these movies work.
Well, that, and a really good script. How many movies out there failed due to a bad story, even if it was a great concept to begin with (Green Lantern comes to mind)?

I wish I didn't have to say "I told you so", but I was reading article from the ***Daily Beast***, and here's a quote from that article: *And next year will bring us Josh Trank’s The Fantastic Four, which has cast the black actor Michael B. Jordan in the role of The Human Torch—a far cry from the original Fantastic films, which transformed the Hispanic Jessica Alba into a blond-haired, blue-eyed white woman.*Quote - I'd like to see that pic without the photoshop work done on it....
Or am I being sexist?
Maybe you're not, but your little drooling guy is?
I don't think anyone would call it sexism here, at the Poser forum of an online artists' community. Make the same statements in other places, though, and maybe it would start some kind of flame thread. I think cultural standards in this area are maybe shifting a little bit these days.
And... I've responded with pedantic seriousness to a joke, haven't I? Again.

Just a little...
But that aside, I had the hots for Catherine Bell when she was on JAG!!!
Now there was a far-fetched show if I ever saw one. I am a 20 year Navy vet, and I knew a lot of Navy Lawyers (yeah, I got in trouble here and there). They are as dull as can be, and none of them work with hot Marines.
Oh, and as far as NCIS is concerned, they only got the hot agent part right. With the exception of one I know of (and I can't disclose where she works, but it isn't stateside), every female NCIS agent I ever met was a beautiful woman. And they carry guns in fanny packs we are not allowed to search when they come aboard the ship...

Here's an interesting little tidbit about both JAG and NCIS. As you may know, NCIS is a spin-off of JAG. Now NCIS is getting another spin-off NCIS: New Orleans. That's not the interesting part though. One of the agents on the new show used to be a recurring character on JAG. Unfortunately, she's not renewing her character from JAG. Her name is Zoe McClellan, and she played P.O. Jennifer Coates. I personally think it would be cool if she did reprise her character from JAG.
What's a JAG? It looks like an acronym, rather than "No, you can't borrow the keys to my Jag, you jag!"

And yes, it means Judge Advocate General. Look back a few posts and you will find a very sexy pic of Catherine Bell that Earl posted. We were both discussing the fact that she would have made a perfect WW in her prime (she's still a stunner)...

Quote - I wonder how tall she is, and if she can act?
Wow. She has more muscle in her deltoids than I have in my thighs. How much exercise does one need to undertake, to bulk out like that?
Can we maybe guesstimate a height by her head and body proportions? Size of head to length of torso... seems like a shorter person. Umm. Certainly not in the six foot range.

"Adrianne Palicki, the former Wonder Woman has just joined Agents of SHIELD's second season as Bobbi Morse, a.k.a the top agent codenamed Mockingbird."
Interesting... Word is she is only slated to appear in episode 5 of season 2, but it could be a recurring role. There is also word that she may not be aligned with Colson and his team...

Here you run into the problem all comic and written adaptations have: what works in writing and in comics might not work very well at all in live action.
Let's consider Wonder Woman. The issue there is that in comics, with very few exceptional artists, the characters aren't realistic, they're stylized, and the only difference between the way characters look is costumes, hair style, colour, and perhaps a few other minor details. Wonder Woman, as usually drawn, has Generic Female Caucasian Face. Take that same face, give her blonde hair, a slighter build, and a different costume, it's Supergirl. Make her blonde, different costume again, and a bigger bust, it's Power Girl. Keep the dark hair but make her significantly taller in a different costume, it's Big Barda. Make her big again with green skin and hair, she's She-Hulk.
And that works in comics, because, stylized. You can say Diana has godlike beauty, and the comic reader will accept that even if she, objectively, looks exactly like almost all the other women in the same comic. Supergirl looks like an innocent teenager, Power Girl is attractive but not to Wonder Woman levels, Barda is rugged...you can say that in comics and people will accept it, because they know the art can't show it. Same thing for animation. And it's even easier in writing because..."She had an unearthly beauty that surpassed any other woman." There, done.
But when you use real people, all of a sudden you crash into, well, reality. In the comics or writing you might say that character X is the most beautiful woman in the world, but what actress do you have that everyone agree meets that qualification? Hell, I can't answer that question for my own personal choice because I can list any number of actresses that I could see fitting that role in different cicrumstances, and I guarantee my list would be different from yours which would be different from someone else's.
So who would make a good Wonder Woman if you had a free pick and could pluck any actress from any time? Sure, I can see Catherine Zeta Jones, but that's Diana as ambassador. If it was Wonder Woman raised and trained as a warrior, with power nearly equal to Superman, can't see it. Now Rachel McLish, (http://www.legendaryfitness.com/McLish1.jpg) on the other hand, after she left bodybuilding and went into acting, that I could see. That looks more like a woman you could picture throwing a truck. Or, with my time machine, snatch Lanie Kazan from the late 1960s or early 1970s (she was the actual inspiration for the look of Big Barda). I could see her doing it too.
And of course, that doesn't count acting ability, which would be a whole issue onto itself.
