http://shop.balsausa.com/product_p/443.htm

Had a couple of these probably thirty years ago, it went out of production for some years, now it's back, just at four times the price the others I had cost.  It doesn't look like this when you get it, it's a kit, a real kit, balsa and plywood.  Built according to plan, it's a screamer, my guess probably 90 mph level, but it's also a ball.  And the price given is only the start, by the time I'm done with it, probably I'll be some $600 lighter.  Nobody need to complain about the price of gas, the fuel for this thing is about $35 per gallon, available in three gallon lots of quart bottles.  And that's only the first one of several different models I want, by spring.  Gonna be a busy boy.

@ Teyon

Great Job on that Lizard-man... Love the scaly texture of his skin! :)

I finished the Phantom and pulled out another A/c project here on my end that needed finishing up... I've been doing "Aggressor" sets with my historical aircraft models to represent both sides of a conflict and to go with the Phantom I also started a MiG-21 "Fishbed" PFL, one of the mainstays of the North Vietnamese Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict. Over the last while I've been finishing up the modelling on the MiG so I thought I'd post some of the preliminary modeling like I did on the Phantom...

I'm still filling in the finishing details on the mesh and it has yet to be UV-mapped or textured... and I still have to start weapons modelling...

cschell ( ) posted Fri, 26 December 2014 at 1:45 PM · edited Fri, 26 December 2014 at 1:49 PM

I got the modelling and textures done on the main MiG-21... still need to model weapons for it, but the MiG didn't carry anywhere near the same range of weapons that the Phantom could. The typical load on a MiG-21 was 1x 130gal Drop-Tank, and 4x K-13 "AA-2 Atoll" Missiles (the Atoll was a clone of the US AIM-9 Sidewinder, in fact it was such a direct clone that seeker heads from the Aim-9 were found to be directly compatible with the mountings on the K-13 missile body and could be switched back and forth with no alterations). The MiG-21 had a very limited range of only about 45 minutes of flight time and an extremely limited load capacity, like most Soviet fighter designs, but was smaller and much more maneuverable than most Western Fighters of the time...

Started on the modelling for the MiG load-outs... Like I did on the Phantom, I split the loads between the various mount points so that loads can be mixed and matched. The MiG-21 (like the Phantom) had no internal gun, so it could carry a 23mm Gun Pod externally on the center-line hard point in place of a 130 gallon Drop-Tank for air-to-air combat. Though it wasn't designed for ground attack, the MiG could also be fitted with 550lb bombs (2 on a center-line mount, and 1 on each inner wing Pylon). The typical A2A load for Fighter Intercept was 2 outer-wing 130Gal Drop-Tanks, 2 K-13 AA2 Atoll missiles (1 each on the two inner-wing Pylons), and  23mm Twin-barreled Cannon Pod on the center-line mount. For Bomber Intercept missions the MiG-21 would typically carry a single 130Gal Drop-Tank center-line, and 4 Atoll missiles (1 on each of the 4 wing pylons)...

Here's a test render of the Fighter Intercept load-out... nothings been rigged yet, so the weapons were just manually parented (I was just testing the modeled weapons to double check the scale and positioning on the model to make sure I'd gotten everything done correctly). As I haven't UV mapped the weapons yet, the textures on them are just temporary... I'll post renders of the alternate weapons variations I've modeled a bit later on....

Nice work so far on those textures RedPhantom... they're coming along quite nicely! :)

I got the UV mapping and textures done on the MiG-21 Weapons Sets... Here are the various weapons options that I modeled (as with the Phantom I only made models for the most common loads). I deliberately chose to put Soviet markings on the weapons as many of the weapons sent to North Vietnam (including most of the Aircraft) arrived and were pressed into service with Russian Markings still painted on (the textures for the main MiG model also have mainly Russian makings and labels except for the Nose Numbers, Roundels, and North Vietnamese Service Flags/Squadron Patches)... or simply painted out on arrival... It was quite common for MiG's in Vietnam to still have all the Russian markings intact except for the tail numbers (which would be painted over when Nationality Roundels and new Aircraft Nose Numbers were applied).

file_202cb962ac59075b964b07152d234b70.jpOuter-wing Pylons (130Gal Drop Tanks or K-13 AA2 Atoll Missiles)

file_013d407166ec4fa56eb1e1f8cbe183b9.jpDuring the Vietnam Conflict the MiG-21 had few alternatives for weapons.. sometimes older Beam-riding, Radar Guided K-5 Alkali Missiles were carried, but due to limited combat effectiveness were replaced with the K-13 Atoll which was a cloned Aim-9 Sidewinder reverse engineered from captured examples. The Mig-21 could also be armed with a selection of unguided Rockets and Rocket Pods but this was also not very common as the Fishbed had poor Ground Attack performance on the best of days. Like most dedicated Interceptors of the 50's and 60's, the MiG was mainly designed for high altitude Bomber Interceptions and so suffered (like most Bomber-Interceptors of the era) from poor range and deficiencies in Electronics and Counter-measures... and a lack of weight capacity for Weapons carriage.

Oddly enough, despite these deficiencies, the North-Vietnamese Air Force (VPAF) made good use of the MiG-21 scoring a high Kill Rate against US Air Force F-105's and B-52's engaged in Air Operations over South Vietnam. The MiG-21 could also out-maneuver the F4 phantom in a turning fight and often bested early F4B's in the "Dog-fight" environment of close air combat where the MiG's greater agility allowed it to avoid the missile attacks of the F4. In post-Vietnam studies the MiG-21 easily compared to smaller US Fighters such as the F-16 for speed and maneuverability and it is still in service in many countries around the world today...

Something's missing, cschell. You need something for the after burner exhaust if it's in flight. Maybe a texture or a morph, or both. But looking at that render, all I can think of is the jets have no thrust.

vilters ( ) posted Tue, 06 January 2015 at 9:23 AM

Hi Earl, sorry, aviation is my profession. LOL.

The above Mig-21 has an exhaust plume. Meaning that Mig is in Military power (MAX power without afterburner.)
This is due to bad combustion at Military power. Most older style jets have that.

When going afterburner (at a HUGE fuel cost), the plume goes away and is replaced by the cleaner burning afterburner flame.

A Mig 21 in full afterburner has some 3-4 minutes of flight time at the lower altitudes. Then he is empty and becomes a glider. No LOL.

Afterburner is rarely used in flight. Mostly for Take Off only. And when you select burner in a MIG 21 in a fight? it is a decision of DO or DIE.

Example; A clean F-16 (no external fuel tanks) has some 7.000 pounds of jet fuel.

Low level, airshow style flying, you have some 6 minutes of afterburner available.
High altitude cruise endurance can go for 3 hrs with the same 7.000 pounds.

Fuel consumption is the single most critical parameter to start or avoid, win or loose, a fight.

The Mig's are in Military power. That is good to live and fight another day.

Mig21 uses burner to take off and initial climb to altitude.
They fight and attack in Military.

Burner to get out, FAST, or to flee from a fight. => At altitude, nose down, and in burner they accelerate like hell on fire in a dive.

The ONLY aircraft that can outaccelerate them in a full burner dive is the good old F-104. (When clean, no external stores.)

Nothing else comes close.

I admit I didn't know what it was called and I also admit that my knowledge  with jets is limited to watching Top Gun and JAG re-runs, but  I'm just saying, for the purposes a a still picture, afterburners show action. It's not accurate i know. Kind of like how you can hear a ship explode in space in the movies or on tv.

cschell ( ) posted Tue, 06 January 2015 at 4:38 PM · edited Tue, 06 January 2015 at 4:51 PM

At best with a full load like these have, the MiG-21 only had an hour of flight time on full tanks at cruise speeds... short range was a flaw shared by most Bomber Interceptors designed in the 50's and 60's on both sides of the Cold War... range was traded off for speed and time to altitude ability...

If I was going to add the Afterburner flame, I'd have to depict the MiG's after the attack when they'd dump in extra throttle and head for the deck to avoid that angry response of the Bomber Escorts... Usually F4's (though others also served as escorts for the Bomber raids in 'Nam)...

Most of my Aircraft pics don't use an afterburner effect since it wouldn't suit with the reality of the aircraft in flight... I was tempted, but chose to add the heavy exhaust plume instead as it was more accurate to the situation...

Well, I couldn't get Blender's new sewing feature to work so I had to model this by hand and using Poser's Cloth Room. I have a few more tweaks to make to it, but so far I'm pretty happy. I AM having a little bit of an issue with the Cloth Room though. The dress has no real thickness to it, but that drape in back should have some. Plus you can't really see it in preview because the normals are reversed in some places. It renders okay, but you don't know what's what until you do.

Have fun and keep rendering,

I actually have several projects going simultaneously and just started a new one. First look at my first organic model.

file_6974ce5ac660610b44d9b9fed0ff9548.pnNot really sure how to proceed with this. Don't know whether to sculpt or model the facial details.

Kitty.  Do what ever works for you. I don't know what your ultimate intent is with it but you should think about maybe doing both. I made a cat for Poser 8 but we didn't use it. The reflections in the eyes made renders grind to a halt.

Adding some detail to the house of healing, out on the hillside of the Lothlorien enviro playset.

This is what I am working on.

Had to pick up skills in Hexagon & Photoshop (for kitbashing & retexturing Dave Metlesits' ships over on Deviant Art), and converting Mylochka's ST poses for M3/V3 to all of the SM & 3rd party figures.  Now that I think about it, very few items have their original textures.

OK, I've added enough detail to make what was originally intended as a background prop passable for close shots.  Evening tests again, because I have to see whether the IDL-active feature is working and in balance.

The house of healing, pano view.  Mezzanine added to the big bay window, firepans added, columns have capitals and pediments.

Seachnasaigh, you call it the house of healing but I see it as the house of elders. And Rex is overlooking Green Glen off in the distance where you can see the house the Elf queen's consort grew up in.

I'm working on a story that takes place in part in an elven valley and I picture it much like what you've created. What you make is amazing.

One question, on the last image, the trees seem to be floating. Are they supposed to be for is that just an angle thing?

     Thanks, Chris.  :D

Hmm, yeah RedPhantom, that does look odd.  The green ground falls away to a creek bed, and those trees are on the far bank beyond the creek.  Behind that is the backdrop wall.  I'll have to get another look with the camera slid to the right.

Also, in the first pic (the pano shot of the entire building), the stream, visible on the right, has a moderate slope so I probably should make that section of stream semi-chaotic.  Not waterfall, but not level quiescent stream either.  Gentle rapids, I think.

You have a good narrative going.  If you envision a particular house, you might draw a scribble of it, maybe with written particulars, and maybe I can whip that up.
