"I so badly want to take that as a good sign that Poser is finally going to see Studio for what it is... the competition, not a partner."

Dont you mean poser users like yourself. :-)

Daz studio will truly never be "the competition" because

it is freeware.

thus I am not sure why you think this would be relevant news

to Daz users any more so than the hiring of a new product manager at Autodesk.

Because many DAZ users also use Poser so yeah, they might be interested. And no, Studio is definitely the competition. Admittedly, I could also argue that DAZ itself is the competition because nothing they have done since before Genesis came out has been to the benefit of Poser. I'm hoping that SM now realizes that and will move to correct the situation of full dependence on third parties for content.

And, just how long do you think it would remain so if Poser disappeared? Anyone counting on that to stay the same would be an absolute fool.

Fair Enough

but to be fair to SM they have not officially had any

"full dependence on third parties for content." since the  poser 4 propack.

Poser 5 shipped with Don & Judy

Poser 6 James & Jessie and so on....

it is the poser user base that never fully embraced

,and developed for, The Native poser Figures.

"replace firefly with a proper PBR and make the material node system more user friendly, Like  the elegant system of blender."

Agree with wolf on this one, it's always seemed incredibly strange to me that the Poser material system has been basically monopolized by one individual in it's proper use (guess who). In order to figure out ways to use the material room for certain tasks (ok, many) an individual is required to search around on forums, wade through egotistical nonsense and tantrums, or pursue the study of advanced math (?) The information is not officially documented and it seems to be in the hands of a select few who have little or no official affiliation with the software. Just as a smattering of smart-assery but I already have enough debt accrued getting my degree in art ("and what's the use in that?" ;/) a degree in math is asking a bit much to use the" hobbyist software" that "easily creates 3d character art and animation". Sadly this is the case with many of Posers more advanced features. As a closer to home example, how long was ERC a community hack before the developers decided to implement DP's (to much product fanfare I might add)?

"And, just how long do you think it would remain so if Poser disappeared?"

Daz studio Pro was Originally a $$ Paid $$ version.(Around $350 USD IIRC)

This  Price point did not require the Disappearance of poser.

Now yes, they wisely dropped that price back to Zero

But I fail to see what the existence of poser had to do with any of it.

Posers Continued existence is only relevant to the people who Exclusively use poser .

That, in the larger world, is a very small group demographic.

If I were to offer any unsolicited Advice  on major new features  that would likley please the largest number of users,

It  would be to replace firefly with a proper PBR and make the material node system more user friendly, Like  the elegant system of blender.

Physically based GPU/CPU rendering is now in the hands of even the most Casual hobbiest's at ZERO ENTRY COSTS

( Blender,Cycles,Daz Iray ).

IMHO SM would be wise to get onboard.

I would wholeheartedly OPPOSE replacing Firefly as not everyone who uses Poser seeks a "realistic" looking render. I have a camera for that and it's faster. However, if SM would like to add a second renderer that was PBR so that people could choose which they'd like to use, I'd be down with that.

Nerd, I'd like to see improvements to both the Cloth Room and hair room, namely a styling brush and actual hair strands that lets you curl and braid it. Also, some volume lighting and smoke or fog. I know you have a fog tool and I do have it, but it be nice to have Poser beable to implement it maybe with particles or some kind of atmosphere setting.

Poser already has atmospheric lighting..........you just have to turn it on.  This light set not only has some great lights, but includes a wonderful, easily understood tutorial on how to use volumetric lighting.  http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/fiat-lux/58487/

Nerd, could you explain why Library is a Flash/AIR applet when the rest of Poser's interface is native? My mouse tracking goes haywire when trying to scroll and I'm not comfortable trusting a browser plugin to handle this task without knowing why.

I can't tell you why, but as it was Bagginsbill that designed the Library, perhaps you should ask him.

That was before I came on board. I can tell you this, I'm on your side. I don't think it's wise to build anything out of adobe. Especially in California, one earthquake and it all comes crashing down.

I've found my people. But seriously, please have the programmers rewrite this as native code with no external dependencies.

Ted was a contractor for SM.  As I recall, Steve said that this enabled the same Library code to be used across several SM applicaions, reducing development costs...

According of Bagginsbill at the time, it would have cost a great deal more to build the library from scratch, rather than using available software. Probably in both time and money.

For the record I wanted to write it in Python and leave it as part of the app, not an outside component. It was because of Anime Studio, written in Visual Basic, that we needed an outside component. Due to needing one solution for Windows and Mac it had to be Python or Flex. Python was deemed a loser because it was not going to get embedded in AS and not going to be able to use wx to do what we wanted, graphically. Any other solution such as native GUI in C++ was crazy talk - that would have been a solution that cost 10 times more. I would have been happy to take $250 K from SM but they did not think enough of you would pay $500 per copy to make up for it.

So - if you want a more expensive UI, feel free to ask them for it and send along your $500. I can write whatever they want, but they can't afford what you want, as far as I'm aware.

There is an unreleased replacement already in Poser 10. They have not told me why they didn't officially turn it on. You should ask nerd to actually talk to Uli about it and get back to you.

FWIW I use the AIR version and have had uninterrupted use of the library UI forever.

That would be my choice too.   Keep firefly but also add another renderer as an option.  As mentioned before, there are already free alternatives so it's time Poser had one too, at least the Pro version.

I am pleased to see this info posted.

I own Anime Studio 7 on OSX and was amazed at how much the

poser pro 2014 library looked like the primitive one in AS.

I Don't Blame Bagginsbill for Clarifying his non culpability for

this ridiculous throwback to the late 1990's ,that is the current

Content library system.

I recently made changes to my Zone Alarm Firewall on my  windows 7 Machine .

Because I dont care for the "reportware" built into most software

that contacts external web servers without my permission,

I used the application control feature in ZA to Disallow

external communication for most of my Applications.

But if I do this for poser "pro" my content library wont load.

Not a show stopper Mind you, but just an example of how silly

this external Adobe air dependent library nonsense actually is.

"Any other solution such as native GUI in C++ was crazy talk -

WOW!!  Not to argue with people over what they charge for

programming in C++

But this Commercial $60 USD plugin was written in C++

by ONE independent programmer.INTERPOSER

It effectively gives us C4D users Full Access to ANY standard

poser runtime Library from which we load and use fully

functional poser figures & Content within Cinema4D

It supports All poser formats.

(excluding Native poser matroom shaders & python dependant content)

Now yes Maxon C4D is $3600 USD Professional level Program.

yet for $60 USD you have access to a poser content libraries with

no dependence on flash or other Adobe products.

Daz Studio is a free program that gives me

access to a poser content libraries with no dependence on flash

or other Adobe products.

I am amazed that Smith micro does not deem it crucial to

provide with us this basic internal functionality that had existed for

nearly a decade in poser.

Oh well.
