Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 28 11:20 am)
I am sure this will come off as odd, but if you are going to do thru all of that, why not just use Genesis in Studio and be done with it?
I use both Poser and Studio, and for me it makes a lot more sense to just use Studio for Studio stuff. Maybe that makes me odd, but that is the way I see it.
It is nice that there are ways of getting Studio stuff into Poser, but why limit it that way when you already have Studio? Studio can do things Poser can not, and visa versa.
The Genesis system has a lot of advantages in Studio that simply doesn't work the same in any other program.
Feel free to flame me for my opinion, but it just seems almost as odd to me as trying to run a Mac or Linux program in Windows. I don't try to use Poser 9 up stuff in Studio, and I am not going to use Genesis in Poser for the same reasons.
Using Genesis in another program is basically nerfing everything Genesis was designed to do in the first place.
You might as well put 4 mini spares on a race car, on race day...
Some things are easy to explain, other things are not........ <- Store -> <-Freebies->
Thanks for putting this together, Razor42!

A valid question, but I think one needs to keep in mind that quite a number of Poser users just can't or won't deal with Studio's interface for whatever reason, so the only way they are ever going to use Genesis is in Poser, half-crippled though she may be. If you regularly switch between complex applications it can be difficult to understand this reaction to Studio's rather innocuous interface, but I suspect that for some of those people, Poser is the only complicated program they know, and because DS is something strange and different, it appears doubly complicated. > There seems to be some misunderstanding that Genesis is for the Daz Studio environment only. Some misunderstanding, about Genesis, in this forum?? Surely you jest!
And now back to scheduled programming:
"So anyway, I heard that when DAZ takes over the world they are going to make Poser illegal"
"Well I heard that Genesis is going to eat our children"
;o)
Do any of the g-things work natively in Poser?
NO.
(by 'natively' I mean does it install from one or more executables cleanly, with no muss, no fuss, and no loss of advertised functionality).
You can kludge it in. You can even run the three or four extra python scripts floating around out there that provide some of the missing functionality sorta kinda if you're lucky. Assuming your system can handle the extra load if the scene is large. But no matter how you attempt to phrase it, a kludge is still a kludge, and loss of functionality is loss of functionality.
'Genesis' is nothing but a resource.
A resource that requires multiple steps and programs to achieve the function of a similar resource that is more than a decade old (never mind the functionality it claims) is not worth the time it takes in any environment where there is time pressure. Sure there are lots of tinkerers in Poser-dom; but if you notice, tinkerers do it for the love of the challenge.
Some people have higher standards than others.
So as long as there is no native Poser alternative, kludges are the only way to use a figure made to professional standards in Poser.
Many thanks, Razor42.
I hadn't realized how easy it is to bring Vicky 7 into Poser.
The expression problem could be solved by exporting the bone-driven expressions as standard mesh morphs.
Dial an expression in Studio, then export the head as an obj.
Can get tiresome, but I did much worse to get to where I wanted.
I did this a long time ago when I transferred V4's expressions, which were actually erc-settings of a few basic morphs, over to my V3 hybrids.
(Converted V4's erc-face morphs into standard morphs, then transfered those into a self-made V4 clone I built based on the V3RR mesh)
This was all long before Studio 4 and PP-2014's automatic morph transfer scripts.
Genesis I & II can be made "native" Poser figures quite easily.
The instructions I posted a long time ago must still floating around in Rendo's archive.
Even autofit for clothing workes nicely in Poser.
A V6toV4 or V7toV4 clone that uses V4 rigging but V6/V7 mesh (and head and expressions) would also be a viable alternative to re-use the vast V4 wardrobe many people have amassed. The body would be limited to V4 body shapes, but V6/V7 face morphs, textures and expressions could still be used.
I could think that the advanced weightmaps I created for V4LOD 17k would also work with a V4 "body clone" based on the Genesis 1/2/3 mesh.
Depends what exactly DAZ allows these days in regards to re-distribution.
Lots of options for those of us willing to do a little more than, well, whatever those other folks do with Poser.
:-)

The more I think of it:
A figure that can wear V4 wardrobe without any conversion, looks like V6/V7, uses V6/V7 textures (Or any other V4 texture), still bends in Poser just as well as V6/V7 does in Studio (The demo shots were done without any erc-fixes), might be just what most people actually want.
This is of course the V4 17k LOD mesh.
I'd have to test that rig with a V6/V7 mesh morphed into a V4 clone.
"The body would be limited to V4 body shapes,..."
After re-reading, I have to correct myself here:
The body's "native" shape would be like V4 and V4's body morphs would probably work best.
But as the body topology is identical with V6/V7, many of V6/V7's body morphs should work well, too.
And with fully working scaling in Poser, it would be no problem to "re-morph" that V4 shaped body back into V6/V7's native shape, while clothing still would fit. (Basically a "poor-man's autofit)
Genesis 2 Female and Genesis 3 Female have very different topology. With G3F DAZ has abandoned their old ideal of the topology most follow muscle structure as much as possible for a simpler and cleaner edge flow. interestingly this was seen as major flaw of the many new Vicky replacement figures. I had my doubts about it too but the body builder morph that is included the free base package show that it can and does work.
Or you can just File>Export and not screw around with DSON (and all of it's associated issues) at all.
I have been helping a user over on the DAZ Poser forum with how to get genesis out of DS and into Poser as a Poser-native figure (Struggling with the new GenesisStarterEssentials files/folders).
It isn't rocket science, but you do have to have some understanding of how DS works to get an effective genesis character out of it.
I'll be posting about the People folder later tonight (I hope - lots of things to cover).

"I had my doubts about it too but the body builder morph that is included the free base package show that it can and does work."
Unless DAZ uses HD morphs to enhance the body detail of G3, I doubt a body builder G3 can be as detailed as a body builder SP3.
Thats the one big reservation I still have about Genesis in Poser in general:
Poser has still no edge creasing capability, so: Not enough polygons inevitably result into puffy morphs without detail.
But as the average user doesn't care that much about body detail anyway, I still welcome every way of making Genesis useable in Poser.

There seems to be some misunderstanding that Genesis is for the Daz Studio environment only. The good news is there are multiple ways of using some of the Genesis figures inside of the POSER environment. I thought I would share some info and useful links about using the Genesis figures with Poser for those that are interested.
You can currently use the both the Base Genesis figure known as Genesis 1 (5th Generation figure) and Genesis 2 Male and Genesis 2 Female (6th Generation) in Poser. Unfortunately Genesis 3 (7th Generation) is officially unsupported in the Poser environment at the present time.
DSON Importer
From the Developer -
Poser users can now enjoy the technological advancements of the award-winning Genesis Figure platform in Poser. The DAZ Scene Object Notation (DSON) Importer enables the loading and use of models and figures created for the Genesis platform in Poser. By installing this DAZ Add-On for Poser, users can load Genesis figures directly into Poser and enjoy the benefits of both Poser AND the Genesis Figure Platform. Figures, Props, Morphs and UVs created for Genesis can all be brought directly into Poser via the DSON importer. No additional steps are required by Poser users to install or load compatible products. Once the DSON for Poser Importer is installed, Genesis figures that are marked as DSON Importer for Poser compatible can be installed and loaded into Poser just like any other Poser figures.
The DSON Importer for Poser can be downloaded for Free from DAZ 3D.
Base figures for Genesis, Genesis 2 Male and Genesis 2 Female with accessories are Free from Daz3D.
