If your computer runs 4.7 it should run 4.8 without a problem. 3Delight rendering is still there, there is just an option to use IRAY if you want to. That said, IRAY should also work, it uses the CPU if you don't have a compatible graphics card. Whether you use Genesis 3 is up to you, but the base is free. Nothing saying you can't stick with Genesis 2, it's going to be around for a while.

What about actually trying before declaring an emergency?
Because getting back to the earlier version once you do that is not particularly straight-forward unless you do some serious preparation. Do you have the original install files, or know where to get them for example? I think the concern is understandable. If you install it and it doesn't work, THEN you have a real emergency if you can't revert.
I did the public beta and it was okay but the general release is better. :)
I've always had a problem getting lighting and a decent render in any DS program (just me not knowing how) but I did a default render and it was great.
This version is fantastic (and I'm mostly a Poser gal) so I will use it often.

Thanks for all the replies... and yeah, I read the system requirements for DS 4.8, and there were some imposing numbers like "at least 32 gigs of RAM", which to my 8 gigs mean I'm out of the race with this computer at least. I don't oppose change, on the contrary, I was just a little frustrated with the latest Daz's move, that's all. Hey, I used to be a Poser guy from 2004 to 2010 (when I quit doing 3D artwork), and the one reason I decided to move to Daz Studio to prepare my comeback was precisely the Genesis figure, as it did natively what you had to do with Blacksmith 3D after fumbling with many controls.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna skip this version out and by the time DS 5.0 is out, I'll for sure have a new computer and sysreqs won't be an issue anymore.

There is a Knowledge Base Article, where a Customer asked what the best system for running DAZ Studio is, and that one says things like 32GB of Ram will help, but it is in no way required.

Thankfully my 6GB main box and my 4 GB notebook did not get the memo.
there were additional improvements, not limited to Iray, including a faster and updated version of 3Delight. Iray will work without an Nvidia GPU, it is designed to function "properly" through the CPU with the same quality as GPU albiet not as fast provided you had a high end GPU to begin with. In other words a 1.6 GHz Core 2 CPU with 1GB RAM and the most basic of integrated video cards could render an Iray scene within reason, the faster the CPU and the more RAM the more complex that scene could be all without ever adding any CUDA enabled Nvidia GPU.
I use V4/M4 in 4.8 and the function as well as they did in any previous version and the Memory requirements are still 1GB RAM, 2GB recommended, and anything past that is your discretion. 4.8 appears to be a bit more stable than 4.7. I was reluctant and kept my 4.7 installers just-in-case but at this time I don't think I have reason to downgrade.
I have been a poser user since 1998, I believe both programs poser and daz are great, but I always have found daz to be a little more difficult to operate. for instance poser is costly but you get all the basic utilities as walker designer, daz studio you have to purchase those items separately, which I thought is a horrible idea. if the software is free so should the basic utilities just as poser should be, I like what daz studio alone produces and the products are great, but as far as user friendly capabilities are applied daz studio has to work on becoming more user friendly as poser is. I find using the lighting settings and walk design tutorials and camera settings to technical and difficult to use half the time in daz studio and not as flexible as the tools and parameters in poser are at least not as much, and therefore not alittle more effort in building up. in is one of the main stream reasons people still prefer to use poser interfaces. yes daz is a great company but they still have a lot more room for improvement ? as not only accessing users free software capabilities but free basic utility access just as poser offers such as walk designer and talk designer which is mimic in daz studio going for $ 34.97 or some odd bucks with a membership card. and last but not least a more user friendly setting working tools such as animate, lighting, camera etc should be easy to use such as poser, if daz studio can make these things happen with there software they can be even more successful in the future, that's where poser got there software capabilities right.
I use programs like poser to do comic book art and even use manga artist programs by smith micro, I would love to however understand how daz studio works but can never really find the time to, watch all the video tutorials. daz I think still needs improving in the future so does poser computer technology all you need is a system that will simply operate a 64 bit graphics card or beyond easy to find and purchase .

There has already been a confirmed case of sockpuppetting by vilters, detected from the usage of the term "pollution". Kurmudgenou2K54 prose is very broken, almost like it was done on purpose. genou means knee in french and vilters is IIRC belgian. The 54 looks suspiciously like 1954, i.e. 61 years ago, a reasonable age for being retired from the armed forces. * puts down his KGB ushanka *.

The download manager does not work all that well at times either.. Just purchased an item at Daz and tried to use the download manager ..says there is nothing there to download...I have the latest download manager.. You have great products but ......sigh.

I have been using DAZ Studio for several years. There is now more documentation than there was a few years ago when I started, but there is definitely room for improvement. You can usually get most questions answered on the DAZ Forums, at least that has been my experience. I have been using DIM since it was released and think it is a big improvement. DIM only looks for new products to download when it is first started or when you hit one of the buttons in the upper right corner of the window. That said, it seems to take a little while between when you check out at the store and the information finds its way into whatever data base DIM uses. I've never really tried to measure how long it takes. It maybe in the 5 to 20 minutes range. It may depend on the load on store website at the time.

That has recently changed. Finishing an order should automatically refresh your available file list. And If it doesn't, then it is set to refresh within 5 minutes of when you place your order.

Used poser exclusively since vers 3, but the interface is too static and trying to pose a character with more than 10000 polygons cripples the actual display to only 2-5 fps, thereby making posing a tedious and frustrating task, and the man hours needed to do any custom work testing and creating new shaders is a truly dull and time consuming slog through separate material zones that you have to scroll endlessly down in order to manually change textures..
Add to that the fact that the program doesn't even remember the same folder which you just used, making you re-search through however many directories for the same texture as you can't even Cut&Paste without visiting every. single. M-Zone, which means more useless scrolling (That doesn't even support the middle mouse button F.F.S! ) in order to "clean out" those bloody un-rooted nodes, instead of simply copying a single zone in Daz and just pasting it in 1-2 seconds!
It wasn't until I was starting to quit smoking, that my irritation with the mundane and clunky interface would not help my fast depleting nicotine reserves that I fired up a version of D|S vers 2, it was then, I was able to enjoy working in 3D again, because Daz is perfect for those who are addicted to customization, hell, you can even customize the context menu to include your favorite tool, and script!
So yeah, if you don't like learning and adapting to anything beyond the familiar, then that is on you, and you alone, as the 3D industry is built on innovation, and should not stick to archaic methods of doing things, which is why it took poser close to 10 years in order to implement a camera that can orbit a selected body part, yet still needs to use a graphical representation of a bleeding track ball...

To be fair "Kurmudgen" is a play on the word "curmudgeon" which means: 2. : "...a crusty, ill-tempered, and usually old man." -Webster
I believe it is tongue-in-cheek humor that he's using it in the context of..
3DArt turns out to be one of the most demanding applications for a computer. The software technology continues to improve. The demands are greater. It's all the more important to plan for upgrading our computer systems on a regular basis. I'm facing that prospect now. My current, new computer is an improvement over the old one. But it's not a "graphics power computer." The proposed new computer will be very expensive.
Oh and please stop the conspiracy allegations. We're artists here.

I've been away of the 3D world for almost 5 years, but I was still trying to keep up here and there, seeing what was going on. I was quite happy with Genesis 1 and its ability to morph between male and female... talk about increase your figures wardrobe and all... and then they went to Genesis 2 and separate figures and I still quite got it, you were given more choices for perfecting female and male shapes, still there with you, Daz.
But now Genesis 3 and Daz Studio 4.8, really? I was just starting to get the hang of 4.7, now turns out this new version may not even run on my computer (it's a 5 year old computer, but still handled Daz 4.7 quite well), and I hadn't even started to fully use Genesis 2, it's just giving me a headache.
I think I'll skip this version and just stick to Genesis 2 and 4.7 for the foreseeable time... I mean, Genesis 2 characters were very detailed and nice looking, do they really wanna keep on tweaking that? I am not a perfectionist, I don't need my virtual humans to look just like real humans, I mean, it's called "virtual" for a reason, if I wanna see perfectly uneven human forms I'll just walk out in the street.
Sorry for this rant, I just had to get it out of my system.. i feel there's enough content out there for Genesis 2 that i won't have a need to take this new upgrade by Daz. For this time around, Daz, count me out.
