Subject: Coming Back toPoserland

Xatren ( ) posted Wed, 11 November 2015 at 3:54 PM · edited Thu, 07 November 2024 at 1:38 AM

Hello all. I have been out of the world of Poser since... well, a long time. I wandered off about the same time that Poser 5 launched. Thus, my knowledge is hopelessly outdated. That's what brings me here today.

What's the best way to get back into Poser? I bought Poser Pro 2012 from Amazon, because the download is only $103.99 and I figured it was close enough to current until Poser 11 launches. What I lack is training/tutorials and content. I used to own the then-current Michael and Victoria, but I have long since lost the download links and credentials for those purchases.

So, what should I buy? What should I watch or read? Are Dawn and Dusk worth the money, or should I stick to DAZ content? Is there another seller of good Poser figures I should check out instead?

Thanks in advance.

Note: There's a duplicate of this thread in the new Poser users board. I wasn't sure where to put it. 😅

The recent Generations of DAZ dolls are not compatible with Poser. Aiko3, Michael3, Victoria3 would work, and M4/V4 are the last DAZ dolls to work fully in Poser. Dawn and Dusk will work in Poser. There some indie figures such as Anastasia, Antonia Polygon, My Michelle, etc. Also some improved versions like V4 weight mapped.

As for training, my first thought would be for you to post a description of what you'd like to accomplish. If you don't know where to start, then I'd suggest learn the material room, learn to use the dynamic cloth room, and learn to use the IDL-capable render engine(s).

There is a service release update for P9/Pro2012 which is 3.1 or 3.2; get that - it fixes several bugs and adds some important features.

Poser 12, in feet.

OSes:  Win7Prox64, Win7Ultx64

Silo Pro 2.5.6 64bit, Vue Infinite 2014.7, Genetica 4.0 Studio, UV Mapper Pro, UV Layout Pro, PhotoImpact X3, GIF Animator 5

Hey, There are 23 or so tutorials on poser here at renderosity. They are in depth on a specific topic and easy to use. You can find the latest on the main home page of Renderosity. Let me know what you think of them. Darknewt coordinator.

Welcome back to the Fray! 😃

There are some great tutorials on aRtBee's site:

http://www.book.artbeeweb.nl</http:>

BasicWiz has some great utilities and figures and some weightmapped (that is, new and better rigging) Generation 3 DAZ figures here.

http://orphans.basicwiz.com</http:>

There is an excellent free male figure, Apollo Maximus; information and zip file PW here (the creator's site is currently down):

Much DAZ Genesis and Genesis 2 content (not Genesis 3) works decently in Poser using an Importer, which is currently free from DAZ...

http://www.daz3d.com/dson-importer-for-poser

Items that work with it will have DSON Importer listed under the compatible software on the product page. The Genesis 1 and 2 figures and clothes can also be converted to native Poser figures, either by exporting them from Studio as a .cr2 file, or following tutorials by JoePublic; they can be found by searching for Hacking Genesis in the advanced search here in the Poser Forum.

Have Fun...

PS as far as anything you purchased from DAZ, if you can log into their site, you should be able to access your old downloads...

PPS here are the Poser Pro 2012 updates. the will update it to Win Version*: 9.0.3.26149, Mac Version: 9.0.3.23027; you can check your version under help>about Poser. http://my.smithmicro.com/poser-pro-2012-updates.html

Xatren ,Poser 4 days ,well you missed the most violent days of the civil war that started with the release of V5. V5 tech couldn't work in Poser with out DAZ genesis code. DAZ n Poser tech grew in separate ways. Eventually they made DSON for V5,V6 there's mixed opinions about DSON.

V7 is not for Poser at all not even with DSON. V7 is for DAX Studio and to export her n animations to game engines DAZ has Morph 3D.com now ,it's a game site. And highend app's.

DAZ divided in to DAZ and HiveWire3D.DAZ is no longer a Poser vender.HiveWire3D is a Poser Vender.

V4 still has a lot of content. Dawn is a newer character but making her mark slowly. and there are some cool third party render engines also. Reality3D ,Oxtang Realtime Render Engine.

I like the 100's of year old sayings the best cause they have proven to be the wisest. "Don't put all your eggs in one basket" So I don't depend on one vender, character, software etc etc. There's no rule saying we can't play with them all :)

Hi there Xatren, welcome back. It is good to see you are getting a lot of good advice here.

As already stated there are some good tutorials here at Rendo for free. If you are happy to pay, then there are some really good tutorials from Fugazi1968 that covers a whole bunch of different aspects of Poser and modelling so his store is worth a look.

You asked if Dawn and Dusk are worth the money, my personal view is a very positive yes, but before you pay out for them, you can see a lot of examples of what users are doing with the figures in the Hivewire3D forums and make a slightly more informed decision.

Whatever you decide to do you will find lots have changed since you last used Poser but it can still be a bundle of fun. Enjoy.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

Pauline will come with the new poser. She looks like she has great potential and could very well replace V4. Erogenesis has also PE coming. She could definitely become the new standard. Check the Project E thread and you'll know what I mean. In any case I'd wait before spending any money on V4 if I were you.

WandW said it best. If you simply log on to DAZ3d, anything you purchased will still be there in your product library. It still has all of my old stuff there but you be prepared for the download manager. Free up some hard drive on your external drive if you have a lot of purchases and be prepared to configure the DL manager to fill it up.

In the meantime, welcome back! You have years of freebies to get!

I believe Dusk is still free at Hivewire3d. Right now he's the only realistic male weight mapped character for Poser other than the included ones. Both Dawn, Dusk and Luna are well worth trying and I think they're well made. I picked up the V4 Pro Pack for free at Daz after missing out on the M4 Pro Pack. I'm thinking all the older generation figures will be given away at some point. Keep looking and wait it out if you can.

Personally I would avoid the going down the Genesis import route if I were you. For most, it causes a good deal of frustration, and you end up supporting a vender that's not interested in supporting Poser users anymore. You may be better off updating yourself on what Poser has to offer.

I tried the Genesis DSON importers, and was able to get a few Genesis 1 figures working in Poser 10. That said, it's a freaking hassle. I won't be spending money on new DAZ stuff with the intent of using it in Poser. Luckily, all I used was the stuff that comes with Genesis Starter Essentials. I might still pick up a thing or two for DAZ Studio itself, if I decide to give it a real chance. I already have it, so why not, right?

As for getting my old purchases from DAZ, the login information (even the login name) has vanished to the land of wind and ghosts, never to return. Thus, I will be starting fresh. C'est la vie.

When did you last login into DAZ? Do you still have the same email info as then?

If you can't get the Genesis importer to work properly just ask for help. The problem is normally in the configuration. I do prefer Poser over DAZ and they still release some good Poser models over there. It's just reversed from what it used it to be where Poser ruled the day. Now I spend more time here and at RNDA as these two places still have Poser models. Have you dropped by there yet?
