Subject: Comic & Painterly sketch styles

Has anyone played with the new comics and painterly sketch styles. Curious how they are on the new system. What all styles does it offer now?

Are these from the preview window or are full blown renders!!

Isn't Marina wonderful?

These are preview renders with the newer controls in PP11 & yes, I love Marina.

Has there been any improvement to the sketch modes? Can Poser 11 produce full-on comic renders? I saw something in the advertising that showed it the new features to be as good as say, PWSketch, which I think is very good.

Sorry to ask all these questions but as a comic producer, I'm more interested in those features than anything else right now.

This is a Superfly toon shader, alone and with the lines (needs to be combined in Photoshop or so,)

That is very cool. The colors are pretty clean but flat. They can be blended together. The best part is that the characters seem more 2D than 3D! Thanks for the peek!

This is a comparison between the NPR shader from the Mariko Project (which I used in my previous image) and a Shader published by Infinity10 on RDNA, he calls it a modified Sanne shader. Please take note, both shaders are very light dependent, the shader on the right can look more flat if a different light set is used.

But for a flat shader which even generates it's own lines, the second shader looks really good to me.

Can I ask, why SuperFly is generating interest in toons? FireFly is better at non-photoreal rendering and capable of more effects than SuperFly, because SuperFly's BRDF set is mostly devoted realism, whereas in FireFly I can make a much broader set of shaders.

In FireFly you can make things you cannot do in SuperFly. For example, the colors reverse in shadows like this: (image by Vestmann)

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

I know that, and I know how to get NPR images out of FireFly for quite a long while. It's just toying around.

The image above is rendered in FireFly.

Happy to find some example of the comic rendering :)

I was just wondering if this feature is the same in Poser 11 as it is in Poser 11 Pro version ?

I was only really interested in the comic rendering so didn't want to blow a lot of money on Pro if I don't need to.

Also does it render quicker than a photo-realistic render ?

Many thanks !

estherau ( ) posted Mon, 25 January 2016 at 6:47 PM

Yes, it renders quicker.

Can anyone comment on the other question ?

bantha ( ) posted Tue, 26 January 2016 at 12:55 PM

I do have Pro, so I cannot check but looking at the comparison matrix you should be able to work with the non-Pro version.

funny. i used to create this imaging technique back in my photography days using 35mm film sandwiched with 35 mm slides or by projection onto 8 x 10 lith film in color darkroom. it was fun and expensive! good to see it is possible in poser. wish i could figure out how to do the same in photoshop for my older photos.

There are some actions sold here that can come pretty close in Photoshop ... I'm a little rushed right now, but I can look it up later if you want.

DragonWhy asked: is "this feature the same in Poser 11 as it is in Poser 11 Pro version?"

Yes, Poser 11 Standard and Poser 11 Pro both have the Comic Book mode.

If you also render out a sketch layer of a suitable type (you may need to experiment for a while, on that) and the same size as your toon render, then in Photoshop you can use a big soft eraser to remove most of that sketch layer, just leaving shading that looks sort-of like hatching (see picture, below). Of course you have to run an Action to knock out all the white first, leaving just the sketch lines laid over your toon lines and colour flats layers.
