Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 21 6:06 am)
Me. And I think there is a problem with what the admins hear or are told. Let me be clear about it.
e-bots regarding brand new threads (such as I just got about this thread) work perfectly. My subscription to the forum as a whole is working exactly as it should be.
e-bots regarding the first response after I respond in a thread work (as far as I can tell).
This e-bot does NOT work:
After I return to a thread and read what someone said, I never get another e-bot, even if I respond some more to the thread.
Since that is a "conversation", it is the conversations that have stopped dead here. It is the give and take I actually come to the forum for that is gone.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
So - here's the problem written as a communication from one software developer to another.
You have to reset the e-bot flag on a thread when I READ it. You're not doing that. You're only setting the flag when I WRITE into the thread.
More specifically, the act of displaying the exact post that triggered my last e-bot should set the e-bot flag for me on that thread once again.

So - for each thread that I subscribe to, there needs to be
When somebody posts to a thread, you sweep all the subscriptions to that thread where the e-bot flag is true, and send them an e-bot, and turn the flag off, and store the new post # into their subscription object.
When they come to read anything, if they read and display the indicated post # and the e-bot flag is off, turn it on again.

In case my dripping scorn is not sufficiently evident, I could build and test the above data structure and algorithm in less than 15 minutes. It should have been done months and months ago.

I get them very irregularly. Here's a list of all of the notices I've gotten lately, in case it's helpful; the timestamps can be compared with the last post in the threads.....
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Wisdom of bagginsbill:
"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."I got an e-bot regarding WandW's post. Now I will not get another one, ever.

Likewise, I got one from Ted's post...

"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."I did not get one for RK, but I did for W&W reacting to getting one for RK. So messed up.

I got a notice of Ted's reply in this thread, but none for his replies in the RMP Survey thread (which was moved here from the Community Forum for some unfathomable reason), nor did I get one for the reply to the Genesis 3 in Poser thread...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Wisdom of bagginsbill:
"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."OK this is hugely ironic. Whenever W&W posts IN THIS THREAD ONLY, I get an ebot.

Add my name to the list of those who get "irregular" notifications.

The Wisdom of bagginsbill:
"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."Yep add me to the list of very infrequent ebots.
I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 - Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU . The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.
for me it seems if I post a comment. I'll get 1 ebot fore just the next poster but no ebots for the 5 to 15 or how ever many that posted after the 1st poster .I'll get no more ebots until I post again. & I'll get 1 ebot fore just the next poster but no ebots for the 5 to 15 or how ever many that posted after the 1st poster .

I got a notice for hornet3D's post, none afterward...

The Wisdom of bagginsbill:
"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."Add me. I get them, but most of the time, they are irregular and usually after I go back into a thread and read where I left off and several people have responded to the thread.
And most days, I only get notified when someone posts in the gallery.
If I had a nickle for ever time a woman told me to get lost, I could buy Manhattan.
My original post is here, but it's rather long-winded. Bagginsbill's first posts in this thread describe the problem quite well, but the easiest way to demonstrate it is simply to subscribe to a thread that looks as if it will have plenty of replies (you know the sort, I'm sure...). You'll get an ebot for the first reply, but never any more unless you manually unsubscribe and then re-subscribe; or if you post a reply.
The same thing will happen if you reply to a thread and check the 'Notify me' option. You'll be automatically subscribed but only ever get one ebot.
I would ladle on some dripping scorn of my own, but BB does it much better than I. :)
I would add that sometimes unsubscribe + resubscribe does not get me one more e-bot. However, if I don't post a response or don't resubscribe, it is certain I will not get an e-bot. Reading a thread NEVER triggers a new e-bot.
Boni you don't need to wait a long time. Give my algorithm to the "programmer" (term used extremely loosely here) and either he won't get, it in which case I'm getting the fuck out of here, or he says "oh - right - ok" and fixes it.

Yesterday I was asked to fix a bug. One of the other programmers I work with had modified a piece of Javascript to detect a special status code, 498, that we use to tell clients the authentication token had expired or was otherwise no longer valid.
He insisted he DID check for it. And yet it was not working. He distinctly remembered adding the check. But it was not doing what he thought he told it to do. Here's the code.
if (xhr.status == 401 || response.status == 498) { oops("Error: Please log in again");
The problem here is the programmer thinks he knows what he said. But he said "response.status", which happens to exist, but is not where the 498 is. It should have said
if (xhr.status == 401 || xhr.status == 498)
This subtle difference between mental model and actual program is largely the cause of such failures. I say this to you not to say this is actually happening, but if the "programmer" believes he knows what is happening, and this belief is factually inaccurate, you can't tell. His conviction that he knows what is happening is unshakeable.
If the "programmer" here thinks there is no problem, he needs to get somebody else to review the code, as I did for my colleague.

I would add that sometimes unsubscribe + resubscribe does not get me one more e-bot.
I had an impression that I may occasionally not have received an ebot even after toggling my subscription, but I couldn't be 100% certain that I'd really remembered to do it. Even when the forum worked, the ebots sometimes went on holiday, after all.
Please, please, forward BB's comments and information to the programmer. He knows what he is talking about. I only received one ebot for this thread yesterday and it was about the person who replied right after my comments. After that, nothing.

While I completely agree with what BB has said, I don't think that is going to happen.
What totally boggles me is how EBot's are so messed up in the first place. The module should already know how to do exactly what BB outlined.
EBot modules, like Drupal Notify for example, are stupid easy to set up........... In just about every Ebot module, what BB described is nothing more than the notify new content setting being turned off......

Me too. Not sure if it's consistent or sporadic, but I didn't get (or to be more accurate, I'm fairly sure I didn't get) ebots for rorrkonn or moriadors posts on the Preventing Edges On Architectural Etc Models Being Too Sharp In Poser thread that I started yesterday. But I've been looking at and posting to that thread quite frequently - I cross-posted with rorrkonn, but moriador posted yesterday evening, and the first time I looked at the thread since then was around 2am UTC this morning (Mon 18th)

Still hit or miss for the threads I'm subscribed to; I haven't gotten one for replies to this thread for days...

I've been using the Is Poser Dying thread as a test bed; it appears I only get then for the first post after I post, but none thereafter.

That rings a bell... don't some forums (DAZ?) send an ebot along the lines of "there's a new reply to such-and-such a thread. You won't get any more notifications for further replies till you visit the thread." I'd guess that when you subscribe it sets a flag. When the first reply is made it ebots you and clears the flag. When you visit the thread (logged in of course) it sets the flag again. (Of course there'd be more to it, but maybe that's what Renderosity is trying to do here?)

I did not receive an ebot for 3dcheapskate's reply. I SHOULD receive an ebot for every reply to a thread I have made a comment in. This is how it used to be before the site changes began over the last year or so. This needs to be fixed!

@3dcheapskate
it's not that we're getting an ebot and then no more until we come back and visit the thread again. That would be what we'd want ;). What's happening is, we post then we get an ebot for the next thread post. When we come back and look at the thread, we SHOULD get another ebot for anything that comes after. We aren't. We're getting further ebots only if we ourselves post again. If we don't make another post, there are no more ebots, whether the thread has had replies since we last visited or not ;). It's only resetting the flag when we POST, not when we visit.
Hope that made sense.
Laurie

I just answered a question in a new thread. The checkbox to "Notify me when someone replies" was selected. Yet - after posting, I was NOT subscribed to that thread.
This is yet another bug.
