Subject: Posable Blanket Anyone?

Okay, It's an idea for a posable blanket, one that has enough "joints" so that it can be posed like a real blanket over any figure within reason. Or, if anyone can point me to the right tutorial, if it's possible using any combinations of these programs to make it myself, that would be great too. I've Got Poser 4, Bryce 3, 3-d Studio Max (with no clue), 3-d painter, and all the freeware/shareware in utilities. -Darth_Logice

You could make it using a bunch of deformers in poser.

As long as you make it with enough vertices to deform without breaking up. But maybe a grouped/jointed blanket would work best. Joints for big changes, deformers for small bumps, etc. Big changes with deformers tend to destory your mesh and wreak havoc with texture maps. Maybe about 8 sections? I think you would have to do it in 3D Studio and then adjust the joint parameters in Poser. But I have never made anything that is posable, so I'm just thinking out loud here. Diane

A blanket drapes both endways and across. What would be needed would be a grid of linked parts, not a chain or a tree of linked parts. A grid means crosslinking of branches of the tree of parts (some people call is "anastomosing"). That would need changes in Poser.

Could something like TerraGen (I think that was what it was called) be used to create a surface deformed to the shape of the object it is supposed to cover?

I'm not too sure, but I think the DRAPE command in Rhino could be used to deform a surface to conform to the object. Or the ClothRayes plugin for 3DS should be able to do it. Paul

I had the same need and after 2 months am almost ready to give up. I came REAL close by using a flat square and magnets. The problem is getting it over a figure and then pulling it to conform without acidently distorting the figure... trust me - it happens.

It can be done in Bryce no problem with terrains since you have that. Here is an example: October.jpeg%C2%94 Sorry, I cant do the html thing that well, hope it worked. Hope that helps some.

Not sure what your going for here. I needed a blanket for a rendering I was working on and was able to make a halfway decent looking one using Mason's Ik cape and magnets. You might give that a try.

Another sort of draping is where the underside of an animal's neck/throat or a snake must be stretched around something which it is swallowing.

Here's quick blanket prop I made in Poser4 using the magnets and the ground plane OBJ. I spawned them to Morph Targets so it should work in P3 as well. Put these files in your props library within Poser. http://howarth.virtualave.net/BlanketTest.zip This was done in 30 seconds, think what you could do with the mags if you take some time to work on it. Ignore all version number errors. -JH.
