Subject: UVMapper -type program for Macs?

DocMatter ( ) posted Sat, 03 December 2016 at 1:22 PM · edited Sun, 22 December 2024 at 4:28 PM

After changing over to a Mac, the main things I'm missing (really the only thing so far) is UVMapper. The old Mac version of UVMapper doesn't work with Sierra. I've also tried using Wine and Winebottler to get my Windows version to work, but all I seem to be getting from that is error messages. Is there some other program that anyone uses on a mac that can come close to what UVMapper does? I mostly used it for creating textures from UV Maps of already existing clothing items. Thanks in advance.

I stopped using UVMapper when I started using Blender for my modeling. Blender is free and while I won't sugar coat the interface as being rather intimidating, once you learn it, you'll wonder what you were so afraid of. And Blender works just fine on the Mac.

I just started doing some modeling in Blender and have to say that the UV unwrapping tools are pretty easy to use and understand. Blender is free.

Go to YouTube and check the Poser2Blender2Poser series under my name. 6 video's till now and more to come about the workflow between Poser and Blender.

I do not make Blender tutorials, but concentrate on how Poser and Blender can work together. Best regards, Tony

I believe the UV mapping tools in the latest version of blender have even been improved & updated.

I have actually seen in tutorials that other programs (ZBrush specifically) benefit from using the UV mapping capabilities inside of Blender over their own.

I think the consensus is that you should use Blender for uv mapping, Docmatter. I can vouch for it's Mac compatibility. And Renderosity has a Blender Forum where you can ask for help if you get stuck.

Back in the day, if it wasn't anything I do too often (like UVmapping) I'd just run small PC programs in VMware Fusion or Parallels running winXP as virtual session. If UV optimization is a big deal, Headus UV Layout might be a handy solution (though not for the occasional user.) I haven't tested either VMware Fusion or Parallels out on Sierra, but they should be up-to-date. Handy for running other creator tools like EasyPose. -K

UVLayout and Unfold 3D are popular choices in the industry.

Thanks all! I'll give Blender a try first and see how that works out. If not, I'll try some of the others.

If you need help to get started, please ask, either here or in the Blender forum.
