Subject: Some Low Poly PBR Work

Thought I'd share some low-poly PBR projects I've been playing around with the last couple days. I'll start with this hard hat model.

The model is just over 2k quad polygons for next-gen game assets or VR. Modeling and unwrapping was done in 3dsmax, painting and PBR texture maps in 3dCoat. Map size is 4096x4096. The renders above are all real-time renders.

Wow, the details are awesome. Looks like the normal map is adding most of the hard edges? I really like that you didn't go overboard with the dirt and stuff. It's just the right amount of wear and tear. I love those decals!

Yeah, what HMorton said. Very well done Lux. 😄

That's a very nice looking helmet! Will it fit on Daz characters? I'd love to use it in Daz Studio if you ever release the model.

Thank again, everyone. Let's keep the thread going with this next one. I wanted to release this one as a possible freebie, but it took a bit more work than I anticipated so not sure I can do that now. Anyway, again low poly with PBR texture maps. 1,590 quads, 1,588 verts. 4096x4096 texture maps. Intended for motion graphics, VR, AR, or next gen games, but can be used for just about any render workflow.

Just one more of the USB. This one shows the individual elements of the model separated in space.

Nice modeling...

SinnerSaint ( ) posted Wed, 02 August 2017 at 4:55 PM

The models look real good, mate, but I feel like the usb stick can be optimized better. Looks like there's too many polys in that blue part. You only need the verts in the loop or tail of the model. The model would be fine in most render engines, but I bet you can get that thing down to less than 1000 faces without hurting the look of it much. One thing I like how you included all the individual parts. That will make it useful in some motion gfx work.

LuxXeon ( ) posted Wed, 02 August 2017 at 6:42 PM

Thanks, everyone. @SinnerSaint, I originally did model the base of the USB with far fewer polygons (as you can see, that's where the majority of the polygon density resides) but wasn't happy with the results in some of the different real-time engines I tested it in. I had the model down to around 800 polygons at one point, but I thought about it and figured anyone who will use this asset will most likely use it, as you mentioned, in some form of motion graphics or close-up animation. Even with some fairly detailed normal maps, I couldn't get the smoothness I was happy with when viewing the object up close, so I decided to go with a larger polygon budget. When you consider some of the possibilities someone might make use of this object, it makes sense to give it some additional geometry. Even so, it can still be used in VR or any real time application.

The following renders are a model I created for use with real-time or AR rendering, but can also be used in any type of rendering workflow. 2,834 polygons, 2,883 vertices. I created PBR texture maps for both specular/glossiness and metalness pipelines, as well as standard physical render engines. Further vertex decimation can be had if it's not used as a hero object, but I decided to keep some polygonal density for versatility sake.
