Subject: Time for Poser 5

Jim Burton ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 8:46 AM · edited Fri, 24 January 2025 at 5:17 PM

I know we all expect a lot, but I really, really think Curious Labs needs to get Poser 5 out for sale no later than mid-December, to get the Christmas money and all that stuff. I'd be quite happy with a couple of minor extras and a optional advanced rendering engine, with raytracing, I don't think a lot of the things we asked for are as important as for people to see that there will be a new version. I'd also like to see as few bugs as possable, myself. The more I use Poser the more impressed I am with it, it is in many way a very very advanced unique program. I would certainly like to see a lot in Poser 5, but as I said I would be glad to settle for less, especially if Curious Labs had a upgrade price for all previous purchasers of Poser 4, including ones from Metacreations, like Corel is doing with Bryce 5. We can always have Poser 6, too, as long as Curious Labs sells Poser 5. So anyway, Curious Labs, I hope to see something new for Christmas!

STORM3 ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 9:58 AM

Seconded! This is probably going to turn into a wish list. However, Like you Jim I would settle for a decent raytracer, possibly as an extra to the existing limited, but fast, engine. I would love lots of other extras too like collision detection but these might be better delivered as plug-ins rather than version upgrades. One thing I would dearly love to see Curious Labs do is change the Library structure to one that resembles the Windows "open folder dialogue box." My libraries are so full that scrolling down through them takes an age. I am sure that this could be simply implemented as the Library operation uses the existing Windows structure merely putting an interface over it. But please CL, like Jim asks give us something rather than nothing, or at least give us a date in order to save up our Poser Pennies. Regards STORM

dunga ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 10:36 AM

I always wanted Poser to have a possibility to have 0. animated paths for camera, props 1. 3d engine for texturing 2. walk designer for 4 legged creatures 3. and improvement for previous version of WD 4. arrangement of morphs in alphabetical order(or drop downmenu) 5. VERY important -- VERTEX counts utility for a body part it is frustraiting to load a head of a panter making a morph, and then realizing that eyes/teeth/gums were also exprted by poser....

You mean to say that you are not satisfied with the cloth motion already available in Poser 4? Here I'm just moving the xTrans dial for the sheet and rendering in Poser. The PZ3 is being held in a sealed envelope and will go to the highest bidder. ![smilie.gif](http://www.philc.net/images/smilie.gif)

Whatever is in P5 I look forward to. I just hope that the Manual is clear and explicit enough to be really useful. As such, there wouldn't need to be so many Tutorials on how to make things work!

a_super_hero ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 11:38 AM

I would rather have a good version with major improvements then just trying to get it out for a deadline. Look at what happened to Pool of Radiance for example on sending it out before it is done. Also here are a few things I would like to add to the next Poser. 1.) Creating seperate Texture/Mat Folder from Poses 2.) Ability to have subfolders 3.) Magic Marker on textures so you can mark where the lines should be in texture maps. (Hates switching to photoshop and back rendering to get it just right 10 times) Thanks, Super

Turtle ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 12:08 PM

I would love to see Poser get together with Bryce so Bryce would take Pz3 files. I have Vue4 just because it will take the pz3 files, but the materials, etc are so limited in Vue. Espellialy for a the freestuff posted. I too, would like to use Poser as a stands all program. I agree with the file system. I think my poser thats up more space than all my other programs do combined. and I'm forever trying to keep the size down Lol :O)

Love is Grandchildren.

Traveler ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 12:36 PM

On the off-chance that someone from CL reads this ;) 1.) Ability to save Single Morphs or Groups of them to a new file format, which would have it's own folder. To keep people from trying to use them on figures that thay won't work with it could be tagged to the geometry call lines. 2.) New folders for MAT poses, and the ability to make and save them right in the program. 3.) A better view of transparency then those dot screens 4.) Ability to save full body morph and scaling data in pose files, and check box options to turns these off if you don't want them saved 5.) More deformers!!!!!!!!!!!! 6.) Ability to reset the fall-off graph for magnets. Or give us some nice buttons with some different preset graph shapes. 7.) Ability to render any of the view modes at any size, without having to go though the extra step of making it a 1 frame animation. 8.) More sketch render options... would be nice to be able to define a brush (Imagine Xaos's Paint Plugin for photoshop mixed with the Sketch Render??) 9.) The ability to REMEBER the last damn folder you accessed, when applying morphs.... (My #1 Poser Pet Peeve) 10.) Mulitple views would be nice I know I can think of more, but these are off the top of my head :) -Trav

Cybermonk ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 12:54 PM

How about the ability to have multiple parents for an object. Realy make creating figures and clothing alot easier and more versatile to boot. I'd rather see them wait and do a real upgrade with a minimal amout of bugs.

wishlist@curiouslabs.com is the best place to send all requests for Poser 5 features.

Jim Burton ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 2:47 PM

Well, this didn't really start out as a wishlist, but like Storm said, it has rapidly has become one. Some things, like changing the file system folders, are only going to require a couple lines of code, but I'm sort of getting the impression that Curious Labs is (perhaps) trying to put too many of our wishes in the new version. Else why would it take so long? I found Bryce 5 to be worthwhile, even though the changes were minimal compared to what we have been asking for. So what I'm trying to say to Curious Labs is ship what you got working, I'll buy it, especially if you do an upgrade price.

Jim Burton ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 2:54 PM

PhilC- How the heck did you do that? Passing the sheet through a magnet? Great in any case!

dunga ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 3:44 PM

POSER 4 is 650 mgb when installed, they should have an option of what to install. If someone one wants to install all geometries --fine, what is I want to install only few?

ElectricAardvark ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 4:09 PM

PhilC -Nobody bid on it...I bid ... my $0.02 worth. That's pretty cool, how is it done?

Dreamspinner ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 4:15 PM

Oh, I have my little wish list for Poser 5 and Storm has already mentioned one: Collision Detection that you can turn off or on. I'd also LOVE to have true reflectivity as in Bryce. Yes, yes, I know it will up the render time, but reflection maps don't always give the metallic look I'd like to see in Poser. Leave the current interface, I know my way around it and it works for me. Subfolders would be extremely nice. Easier lighting set up with backlighting. And another one I've heard kicked around a bit: A Materials lab. Liz Pope Dreamspinner Inc.

leather-guy ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 5:00 PM

My top 3 3] Ditto a nested folder structure capability. 2] A realtime texture/bmpmap management with previews, on-the-fly conversions/resamplings, & the ability to associate an official template with each object, & superimpose it over a preview of any texture or bmpmap to make sure it's the right texture for the current model before loading. 1] Separate Face & expression control panels & libraries, so loading an expession doesn't mean changing to whatever character was loaded when the expression was saved.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 5:20 PM

I want Poser to be able to save its scene complete with ANY and ALL models and attributes (cr2,rsr,obj geometries, pose dots, camera dots,etc...everything) as a single file, period. Just like Bryce. I hate having to keep extra files in geometries, textures, props folders, etc. just to have models come up at all. This will finally serve to keep Poser's program folder down in its already enormously bloated size! I also agree with all the other things people had mentioned above, just wanted to vent, er...propose an opinion that hadn't already been given. AgentSmith

PhilC I'm game, I'll bid $10.

rwilliams ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 6:27 PM

My wish for Poser 5 is that it get sold to a company with the resources to actually move it ahead, and come out with a new version!!!!!!!!!! I am begining to doubt the CL ever will.

PhilC ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 6:58 PM

file_221833.jpg

You have to bid higher than that!!!! In this one the only dial I'm turning is the one that rotates the sheet. All rendered in Poser. Apart from compiling the frames into a GIF there is no post work.

Ooooooo....ye shall envoke the wrath of the CL gods with talk like that....lol. btw....let's not forget what CL has moved ahead with inside Poser... ...remember Poser Pro Pack?

MGCJerry ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 7:14 PM

Here goes another... I agree with many of you, especially Traveler about remebering folders! I'd love to see a Raytracer. 1. An option for compressing your PZ3 files. 2. Larger import/ export selection. 3. Cleaner program directory (less sub-folders in sub-folders, in sub-folders, etc.) 4. Ability to render transparencies for RSR's. 5. Less picky interface. 6. Dual processor support. 7. Network rendering. 8. Simple CR2 editor for beginners. 9. The "Treemaker" feature already in poser to be more deveolped for facial hair. (For newbies, open Poser and type "hair" without the quotes.) 10. More basic models including props... 11. Infinity plane for the ground. Thats all now, most others have already been listed above.

Sherlock ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 7:29 PM

PhilC I suspect the sheet is a conforming figure? CL I'd settle for a real Software Developers Kit where we programmers can integerate real plugins! Thanks.

Cage ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 7:39 PM

Is PhilC using... MAGNETS????? All the magparts parented to the figure, but set to affect the cloth/plane? Yes? Do I get a cookie?

===========================sigline======================================================

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking.  He apologizes for this.  He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

jamball77 ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 7:55 PM

Well give me a hint where do you open. $50 ... Canadian ;)

jamball77 ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 7:56 PM

oh make it $50 US.

jamball77 ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 7:59 PM

PhilC Alright I can see you're just teasing us. This means we have to come up with something better right?

melanie ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 8:36 PM

The ability to save thumbnails as fully rendered images, including transmapped hair. Melanie

PhilC ( ) posted Wed, 17 October 2001 at 9:12 PM

Yeah......!!!! Cage has it (almost) right. I positioned the sheet and deformed it with magnets to make the shape as if it were laying on the figure. I then changed the parenting of the Mag ZONES to the figure. I can now move the sheet without moving the Mag zones.

PhilC: Wouldn't that have been much easier with a spot light and gel? Or do I have my programs mixed up? Also, could you repost the link to that CD of yours? I can't find it. CL: I don't like programs being release half-finished either. But in this case, I just can't wait any longer. I'd probably buy it if the boxed just looked newer.

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Thu, 18 October 2001 at 12:01 AM

it's very ingenious IMVHO using magnets to simulate collision detection but I don't want Curious to rush out P5 until all the bugs are fixed and the add-ons are enough to satisfy the majority of users. I can wait until April or June, especially since the current downturn in consumer spending might make a premature release economically inadvisable.

melanie ( ) posted Thu, 18 October 2001 at 7:54 AM

I agree about waiting until it's done. I remember when P4 first came out. It suddenly appeared before anyone even knew it was coming and everyone got excited. But when we all got it, we all had complaints that it had major glitches. I think they should perfect it first. I'd rather pay for a good product that works right, straight out of the box, without having to wait for patches and fixes. Melanie

ronknights ( ) posted Thu, 18 October 2001 at 2:05 PM

ARGHHH. I bought Poser v1 (By Fractal Design) back in 1996, and never figured it out. I left it on a shelf, and then a few months ago, discovered Poser 4.. I've barely scratched the surface, but have accomplished feats I'd never before imagined I could do. And there are countless goodies I'd like to add....when I get money. Now we're talking Poser 5?! Hey I am still trying to figure how to save and buy Windows XP.

ElectricAardvark ( ) posted Thu, 18 October 2001 at 3:16 PM

I wouldn't waste YOUR money on XP

ronknights ( ) posted Thu, 18 October 2001 at 6:00 PM

Huh. I ran it for a few weeks and had absolutely no problems. (Release Candidates 1&2) The only reason I took it off my computer is that I wanted to have only a "commercial operating system" on my computer till I could afford to buy XP.

gryffnn ( ) posted Fri, 19 October 2001 at 5:41 AM

If they keep the morph dial stack, I'd love a drop-down list on it so you could display subsets only: scale and orientation dials, expression and phoenemes, shapers, full characters, etc. Even more useful to be able to set up a sort criteria yourself, such as all beginning with "nose" or a leading "1". And the ProPack colors the names of a few types of dials - would be incredibly useful if when a dial's setting is changed to a value other than zero (or 100% where appropriate) its name turned a specific color, so you could keep track of what's been set.

melanie ( ) posted Fri, 19 October 2001 at 7:52 AM

I just wish the text over the parameter dials were easier to read. Light gray text over a dark gray background is killing my eyes. It needs to be more distinct, and I wish the dials would automatically fall into alphabetic order. With tons of morphs on my screen, I have to plow through the entire list trying to find the ones I want. Melanie

Please send all of your ideas for Poser 5 to wishlist@curiouslabs.com. We do read all of the input we get. We obviously cannot guarantee what requests will make it or not, but we can can say that your feedback does significantly impact our development efforts. While the forums are great, we can't guarantee that all of your ideas will be captured unless you send them to us. As for the Poser 5 manual, writing that book is my responsibility and you can count on nothing less than my best efforts! Here again, your feedback can have an impact in how I go about this project. If you have any complaints, comments, suggestions, etc. regarding Poser documentation, please email docs@curiouslabs.com. I apologize that I will not respond to all queries I receive, but do know that I will be reading anything you send me. :-) Anthony Hernandez Sr. Technical Writer Curious Labs

Jim Burton ( ) posted Sat, 20 October 2001 at 8:48 AM

Hi Anthony!- Glad you picked up on this! I think if you read the above what a lot of us are asking for isn't the sun and the moon, it is raytracing and some simple arrangements to find what wee need in the libraries or morph dials, plus no bugs, plus having it out by Christmas. What we don't get in this version you can put in Poser 6, and we all want to support Curious Labs by buying Poser 5 real-soon-now!

ronknights ( ) posted Sat, 20 October 2001 at 9:34 AM

One thing about docs/tutorials. I've printed out some pages of the Poser Tutorial and found it quite disappointing in many ways. You have me deleting all my lights, but don't tell me how to get things back to normal. You have me twisting the Casual Woman into a pretzel shape, and don't tell me how to get her back to normal before moving onto the next lesson. I get so that I don't do anything till I see if you tell me how to undo it and get back to normal. If I persist in this good cautious approach, I can forget using your tutorials.

Nosfiratu ( ) posted Sat, 20 October 2001 at 12:49 PM

Jim - We're doing our best! Ron - "I" don't have you doing anything - I've been with Curious a little over a year now and did not participate in creating any of the Poser 4 documentation. However, your point is well-taken and I'll do my best to address your points. :-) Anthony
