Subject: Blender and ZBrush?

Boni ( ) posted Wed, 28 August 2019 at 1:10 PM · edited Fri, 03 January 2025 at 12:05 PM

Is there a good workflow ... or a good reason to use these programs side by side, to work off each other? Character detailing and surface detailing seems to work very well in Zbrush ... and basic creation in Blender. Does anyone know the strengths and weaknesses of working with each program? As I'm working with Blender for the improved interface I still like the results of work in ZBrush, but it is harder to use.

I'm enrolled in a Blender class for a couple of reasons, and one of them is sculpting. It's the one thing I never could get a handle on, but from what I've seen from others taking the class, it can be done, I just haven't gotten around to it. I'm hoping I can get a handle on it, because I tried Sculptris once years ago, and really hated it.

That said, I've only once created anything in ZBrush, and that was a Katana, so a lot easier than trying to create a character. I currently only use ZBrush for it's Remesher, because I'm not really happy with the way Blender handles it. Then again, I haven't upgraded to 2.8 as yet, because this laptop can't handle it, so that may have been fixed to work better.

Let you in on a secret, Miss B, I'm on a gaming laptop (Dell) with an AMD processor and grahics card (face it it's cheaper than Intel and NVidia) and I am using Blender 2.8, Vue 9 complete, ZBrush and Poser 11 Pro. Soooo. It can be done. Of course I don't know your configuration.

I know it can be done using both Zbrush and Blender there is a similar GOZ plug in for Blender here is a short tutorial that can add some interactivity between the two ZBrush & Blender : GoZ Applink GoB This is the most current version and it is for Blender 2.8 Link for Zip file The link in the video tutorial is for a version that is compatible up to 2.79 There is a Thread in the Zbrush forums about the plug in itself

Ok ... I'm just a crazy person ... what about ... Taking GoZ from Poser to ZBrush ... then GoB from ZBrush to Blender? Just a thought.

I don't have a GPU at all, but it's not a gaming laptop, and I honestly thought I'd miss the Nvidia card I had on my old laptop, but I don't. My issue with not being able to use Blender 2.8 is, the OpenGL on this laptop is only 3.1.0, and 2.8 requires a higher OpenGL. This puppy is about 7 1/2 years old, so I'm seriously thinking of getting a new laptop, at which time I'll be able to try out 2.8.

That said, however, I've been using Blender for years, starting with version 2.45 (I think), then 2.47 and 2.49. Then I finally got to play with a professional looking/working UI with 2.52, and I've enjoyed the current UI for a long time, so switching to a totally new UI (and new shortcuts, etc.) is going to take a while to get used to. I "do" want to try out the EEVEE render engine, so I will be playing with it when I get the new laptop, but I won't be abandoning 2.79 any time soon.

Miss B, you are in a good place, you are comfortable with the UI and the capabilities of the program as is. That is great! I'm a bit of a twit, and couldn't wrap my mind around the UI until 2.8, so this is a God-send for me and I'm enjoying the learning process.

You're not the only one Boni. A lot of folks who have complained about the 2.7x UI are now finding it much easier to use with 2.8, and getting more folks to use it, and not be afraid of it, is definitely a good thing.

As far as my being comfortable with the 2.79 UI, I've sort of "grown" with Blender as it developed over the years. The old 2.4x UI was practically nonexistent. How I muddled through with it is a mystery to me now, but I liked what I could get accomplished compared to a lot of other modeling apps I had tried back then, so I stuck with it.

Anyway, welcome to the wonderful world of Blender. I don't know if you ever visit HiveWire, but I have a long post with tutorials, forums, and other Blender related stuff I've compiled over the past few years. That reminds me, I need to update it with some of the 2.8 goodies I've come across here thanks to Lobo and others.
